Midseason Replacement TV Thread

I looked for the last tv thread and it's like, moldy.

A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL. Now on Ammyzon. 3-part show tells the true hijinks of a scandalous gay affair between a Brit parliamentarian and a young lover in the 1960s and 70s.

it's a tragic story but quite funny, great performances.

I'm thinking of picking up a new series to watch, now that Westworld Season 2 is done. Was thinking of trying True Detective, or Fargo, or maybe Boardwalk Empire. Need something to watch.

Well, there's always the Mets.....oh, never mind.

We need a mid-season replacement for THEM.

We've been really enjoying the updated versions of the old game shows. I'm admittedly a huge game show junkie, so I'm biased, but the new Pyramid is good, Family Feud is Family Feud, and the new Match Game is hysterical.

I have no interest in anything like that. I need my TV to be more cerebral. That's some mindless shit right there.

Of these, I liked Fargo the most, especially the first season, and True Detective the least.

I did like Boardwalk Empire, but looking back on it (it's been a few years) it seems that I may have enjoyed the performances and the atmosphere to the storylines. Steve Buscemi and Michael Kenneth Williams were particularly memorable.

the DuckTales reboot is pretty solid. dare i say, in some ways it might even be better than the original.

Re: Midseason Replacement TV Thread

i just finished the 2nd season of I'M DYING UP HERE, the story of stand-up comics in LA in the 70s, at a fictionalized version of Mitzy Shore and The Comedy Store, which launched alot of careers and had a huge impact on comedy.

I liked it, but i'm not sure if it'll get a 3rd season.

I'm still on the first season of I'm Dying Up Here. I like it reasonably well. Not great, but entertaining. I'm not sure its been successful enough for it to get a third season. I suppose we'll find out before too long.

An acquaintance of mine was the mystery guest on To Tell the Truth a few weeks ago.

Re: Midseason Replacement TV Thread

just binged the new netflix series, KISS ME FIRST.

It's a British series that mixes the angst of youth, mental illness and virtual reality (part live action, part computer animation) with elements of a mystery thriller. It's a bit MATRIX/READY PLAYER ONE + GIRL, INTERRUPTED/SUCKER PUNCH, with a soupçon of Philip K. Dick. That may sound horrible to many of you, but I thought it was pretty good, particularly the acting. If your expecting the loose ends to tie up, though, you'll be disappointed.

Re: Midseason Replacement TV Thread

My problem with HBO's 'Succession' is that there's not a single likable character in the entire show.
Now I suppose that's somewhat intentional and probably the writer's/producer's point but, holy shit, what a bunch of assholes!!

Re: Midseason Replacement TV Thread

I am boycotting Summer replacement shows until they tell us what happened next on The Glades. The last episode was a cliffhanger, the hero shot just before his wedding, and (I guess) it was supposed to be a cliffhanger leading to the next season's opener. The show got cancelled, which obviously came as a surprise to everyone.
I really liked that show.

I was a big fan of season 1. I'm through the first two episodes of season 2, and I'm a little meh. Does it pick up?

This was advertised on the Flash Forward podcast, so it intrigued me.

This is basically my way of reverse recommending said podcast.

I liked this season better than season 1, so make of that what you will. There's alot of great character development by the end, and you really care about these people, even Marc Maron's director.

I'm kind of amazed that I'm pretty interested in where the story goes given that, I agree, these characters are all horrible people.

Good performances, though.

Re: Midseason Replacement TV Thread

Yeah, I haven't given up on it yet, but some of the characters are simply cringe-worthy not just in their actions but just in the entire beings.
Maybe none is more c-w than potential son-in-law dude which, considering the two actual sons, is really saying something.

I feel like every episode of SUCCESSION has gotten better as the season has progressed. I'm addicted now.

I've officially given up on SHARP OBJECTS, though. Too slow for my tastes.

I'm enjoying sharp objects but I get that it's a bit slow. I know where it's going though, so i'm more tuned in to the foreshadowing.

Most recent episode was better although still a YUGE asshole factor - no one moreso than the (potential ... still not sure it's going to come off) son in law who someone manages to simultaneously be an asshole AND a dork.
It's tough to believe that she'd even give a guy like him the time of day. Meanwhile, she's more likely to (literally) screw her co-worker while only figuratively screwing her betrothed.

Actually a bit more invested in this one, although it's earlier and so still could go either way.

re: Succession -- Yeah, OK, I'm in.
Still nobody in particular to root for and still a couple of scenes in each episode that make you say "Really?".
But the plot got more focused as it wen ton and the 'Ted Kennedy' plot twist in the finale certainly makes things more interesting going forward.
