Apple store

So i’m having an issue with the start button in my iPhone, and the people at ATT say it’s covered by warranty but I have to go to the Apple store.

This is the oddest business model. Just to get in you have to stand in a short line and check in with someone who takes your info and finds out what you want. Then i’m told, “OK, it will be 25 minutes to a half hour before someone can help you.”

Is the idea that I’m supposed to be grateful that someone can help me fix their defective product?

And what must the wait time be like during an actual busy time?

Re: Apple store

I'm totally put off by Apple because of how proprietary they are. My daughter has an iPhone because she won't have anything else, but the rest of my family are all Android users.

I wonder if you tell them your twins are off to college next month and I
need to buy two or your best laptops would cut that 25 minute wait down
a bit? The Apple Store freaks me out for some reason, I feel like it''s done
intentionally too. Makes me edgy and uncomfortable or something.

Re: Apple store

I wonder if they interview folks and try to make sure everyone on their staff has something countercultural going on in their look.

"We like your qualifications, but we're wondering if you'd object to a few facial piercings. We try and cultivate the exotic here, to let the customer know you're part of a new priesthood. There's a real-world value to that sort of thing. Or, if you're afraid of needles, maybe a hijab."

Re: Apple store

Is that really an "Apple" thing? I have an android and it's the exact same experience. Only there's no Samsung store, or LG store. I go to the carrier store if there's an issue with my smartphone and wait to be taken care of on a first come first served basis.

Come to think of it, as I write this post, it's no different if I'm buying a TV or a pizza. And if you want di Fara's pizza, you could wait more than an hour to be served.

Re: Apple store

I don't know, if I want a TV at Best Buy I don't get sized up in an interview upon en-
tering the store asking me what I want and get put into some waiting queue.

I wouldn't be surprised if the interviewer enters some info about the visitor in some
way, ya know like, a>white male 45-55 b>has iPhone X c>no visible piercings or
tats d>here for service not sales so no rush...

It's the same thing. You might not have to check in to buy your beam or ceiling, but you sure as hell are gonna wait 30 or 40 minutes if there's other beam and ceiling customers ahead of you because they were there before you who need 30 or 40 minutes of their own customer service time.

And no one's "sizing" you up, ferchrissakes. The smartphone people take down enough info to determine if you're there to buy product or for repairs. And then they want your account, because there might be a warranty, or to link your new phone to your #. Ferchrissakes. Just like the pizza person asking you what you want to order and if it's to stay or to go.

Re: Apple store

One of the main differences between Apple and Android is that with Apple, you're always (or almost always) limited to Apple-manufactured products, while Android is licensed to Samsung, Motorola, LG, and more. My beef with Apple isn't about how long it takes to get service, but that you're limited to one vendor.

This, I agree with. But other than the proprietary issue that you raise, I don't see the Apple setup as significantly different than most other brick and mortar setups.

You just go out of your way to be contrary to whatever I post.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but 'quite the contrary.' I'm engaging you
in normal conversation, and politely disagreeing with you. I just don't see
ordering a pizza or buying a TV anything like The Apple Store experience.

You want to see contrary, look at Ceetar's responses to everything I post.
Now that's contrary hahaha...

That's nice and I'm truly happy to hear that. But you should tell me these things because there's like a bad 10 year history here that's entirely at your instigation and how the hell would I know that you suddenly wanna be nice to me? With you, the civility never lasts more than three posts.

So I have to say that I left satisfied.

Waited probably 20 or so minutes. There was some kind of "Apple Camp" going on with kids in matching t-shirts watching while a kind of hipster-looking guy led them through some activities through the Apple music ap on a giant video wall. A tech came over and found me and ran the phone through the diagnostics, determined it was indeed a defective start button and said they would replace it for free and it would be done in an hour. He spoke about Apple being a "community" and did note that there is no Samsung store to go to. Nice guy. An older gentleman with 25 years in IT now doing this to get out of the house. He noted my lapel pin and I might feature him in an alumni profile.

So I had an hour to browse through Barnes and Noble and snagged a new Rock Candy mag with a special section on the 40th anniversary of the Kiss solo albums, got a Scooby-Doo/Supernatural crossover t-shirt for my wife from Hot Topic, some Chick-Fil-A for lunch and come back and pick up the phone. Good as new.

Now, I did learn something. If you want to really scare a retail clerk, be a 50-something guy in a tie and blazer and walk into a Hot Topic. I think he was worried I'd scare away the traditional demographic that shops there.

Re: Apple store

To one of the Appleheads: do songs/albums purchased on Apple's iTunes store
have to be only used in iTunes and on an Apple device? I seem to remember that
I've had trouble with stuff downloaded from them and trying to use it elsewhere
without getting some kind of restricted or unauthorized message or something.

Good question. I've always used iTunes and my iPod -- still clinging to a classic model.

I think that in a worst case scenario, you can buy a CD from iTunes, burn it on to a disc and then load the disc into another device's software.

Re: Apple store

Depends on their file type, I believe. As long as they're mp3 files, they can be played anywhere. Apple (used to?) have a proprietary format (.aac, IIRC), but I don't remember how restricted it was/is.

This probably wasn't helpful at all.

I have a dying iPod (I think we have/had a thread but lazily asked here) that needs
replacing. I like iTunes, but that's the extent of my relationship with Apple now and
in the foreseeable future.
I think I tried burning an album of .m4p's onto a CD purchased on iStore or whatever
it's called and had problems but will try again. Maybe I'm conflating with some other issue.

Re: Apple store

I had problems with iTunes not recognizing half of my library suddenly (probably after one of those frequent updates.) Downloaded the files onto a non-Apple device, and voila!- everything was there. Very strange.

I have my son's first iPod which still works well today. I no longer let it interact with Itunes for fear I'll lose the music on it. It stays in the car for long trips.

I finally bought a shit load of blank CD's last week and have been burning
iTunes purchases to them. They play fine on my garage stereo so long as
I choose 'audio cd' as the disc format and not 'mp3 cd' or 'data cd.' My iPod
has died twelve times but still comes back to life so I haven't replaced it yet
with anything Apple or non-Apple so I still don't know if these CD's can be
be loaded onto another non-Apple platform. In the end I'll probably just get
an Apple replacement but, again, that will be the extent of my Apple stuff.

Honest to damn god I bought a new cell phone charger at a Verizon store about six months ago for $40 that already doesn’t work. I’m buying my next one from a damn gas station
