Outside of the game outcomes, I thoroughly enjoyed Coors Field. I like Denver to begin with and I think they have done a great job sustaining a baseball stadium in the middle of downtown. I understand the reasons for building away from downtown, but I love being able to walk to the game. Granted, I’m coming from a hotel and parking might be a hassle for locals, but I think it is cool to turn a block and see a stadium appear out of nowhere.
I had a club seat on Wednesday night, which allowed me to get several views from seats on the second level. I spent the most time all the way down the left field line and I could see everything from there. One of the things I found interesting about the club level is that they have plexiglass where their broadcast booth and TV control room is, so if you wanted, you could literally watch the control room in action for the game. I didn’t.
Thursday was a day game and I had field level seats behind the plate. It got hot (low 80s) and the seats were in the sun for the game. Because Denver is not humid, the temps were bearable, though. During the middle of the game, I went up to the upper deck level. I tried to sneak up to take a pic at the purple line of seats denoting 5280 feet, but the usher denied me. There were a lot of kids from camps and teams up there for Thursday, so I guess he had his hands full. I should have tried it on Wednesday night when most of the upper deck was empty.
After watching two games there, I consider Coors the best MLB park in which to view a game that I have been to. The atmosphere in the seats is pretty much exactly what I want from a baseball stadium. I felt the food and beer selections were redundant throughout the stadium and lacking in local flavor. I also felt like moving up and down levels was not as easy as in other ballparks I’ve visited.
The fans were polite and engaging. I did see some great jerseys and was surprised at how many people were displaying non-Rockies/non-Mets gear. There were a lot of Cubs fans, a handful of White Sox fans, as well as individual Phillies, Rangers and Giants jerseys-wearing fans that I noticed. I mentioned in the IGT that my ticketed seat on Wednesday sat me between a Braves fan and a Yankees fan. Yikes!
I saw a guy in a Cuddyer Twins jersey and the best of all was a guy in a powder blue Larry Walker Expos jersey. On the walk to the stadium, I even saw a guy in a Mike Hampton Rockies tshirt fake jersey!
Jose Reyes took a little shit from the fans (as he probably should of), but on the whole, the fans were well behaved and good sports. The Mets are really hard to watch right now, and as I Mets-jersey-wearing-fan at Coors Field, I felt like I was getting a lot of pity looks from Rockie fans.
Nolan Arenado is a beast. I know their bullpen has holes and they are under .500 right now, but that team has a lot of offensive talent. I’d root for the Rockies over many other MLB teams. Did I mention Arenado is awesome? Damn.
Anyway, if you’re looking for a ballpark to visit, take a trip to Coors. I highly recommend it.
