IGT 8/1/2018 Woof. Dog Day Afternoon Game

The Dog Days of August start with an Afternoon start.

On the plus side, we have THOR (6-1, 2.89) and they have Tommy Milone (0-0, 5.40)! And, the game is at noon, so the Nats will still be tired from all that running and scoring.

And, it's Tommy Milone!

God bless them, they're actually going to get up and do it again.

Re: IGT 8/1/2018 Woof. Dog Day Afternoon Game

I can almost -- almost -- see the logic in not starting McNeil in a game against Max Scherzer. But, a day after his first home run, we're making him sit against Tommy Milone?

Did you know the 'dog days of summer' have nothing to do with dogs
but rather some dog star that's part of a constellation that rises in unison
with the sun or something this time of year?

That's cool! It's tough to find photos of the constellations over Citi. Had to go for the cheap puns. And Mets-loving puppies.

The cute dog picture is familiar, it's either in a team video or yearbook I think.

Sirius -- the 'Dog Star' and the brightest non-sun/moon/planet object that we see in the sky -- is a southern hemisphere star that appears in our latitudes during the winter months only. So I guess that makes
its apparent movements coincide mostly with the sun in northern hemisphere summer months although, with Sirius not being one of the 'zodiac' constellations, the sun would never completely be "in" it.

Back to the game.
A 3-0 deficit is clearly too much for this team to overcome. Except against marginal hurlers such as Milone in which case the Nats early 1-0 lead was likely sufficient.

Yeah, this game is already pretty much over.

But, hey, we already have three hits (with no walks & eight K's) against Tommy Freakin' Milone ... and in just six innings!!

1:50 PM and its already the bottom of the seventh. MLB doesn't have a pace of play problem, just make all games midweek afternoon getaway days.

Jose giving those home runs right back to Washington. For his sake, I'm glad.

Like the automatic intentional walk, maybe we should just waive Trea Turner to 2nd then 3rd and save the time it will take him to steal those bags.

That's so early June. If he's not gone from this team on August 1, he won't be gone before October 1.

In fact, I'd guess a whole other Jose Reyes countdown is on.

Twenty...

Nineteen...

Jose Reyes, 2019 Met.

Seven innings pitched.

One run allowed.

Nine strikeouts.

No walks.

Tommy Milone.

I wouldn't be surprised if those two dingers meant he had a shiny new contract waiting for him at his locker. Fans love the guy, you know. When we walked around the stadium during the last homestand and talked with every one of the 3,152 people who showed up to our last home game, they all said "we're here because of Jose Reyes."

I couldn't believe this when I heard he wasn't in the starting lineup.
McNeil was the hottest hitting prospect ready for promotion.
He plays the same position as Cabrera, who was traded away.
He had hit his first major league home run the night before.
He wasn't going to face Cy Fucking Young. The pitcher he would face was closer to Loretta Young.

Why not see what he can do?

There was no logic to keeping him out of the starting lineup unless he was injured. And, since he pinch hit later in the game, I'm guessing he was healthy enough to play.

I don't recall whether I've chimed in on any Callaway threads yet.
But now I'll say it.
Fire his ass.

I think the logic isn't elusive. It was to stack righties against Milone to try and optimize platoon differentials. We don't have to agree, but it's the way folks do it.

This is just silly.
Look at it this way; if tomorrow's headline was Mets Fire Callaway, Cite McNeil
Non-Start in Wednesday Matinee
, you'd laugh your ass off.

No. Of course not.
They are at the point that the long term development of players should be put above any one game. There should be many personnel evaluations made between now and the end of the season. His minor league splits showed he is not totally overmatched by lefties, so let's find out how he does at the major league level to see if he can be an every day player or just a platoon piece.

I liken it (for all you Jets fans out there) to last Year's Jets situation where the fans wanted to see what the young quarterbacks could do but the coach kept putting in the experienced guy because he felt winning (and saving his job) seemed to be more important than player development.
The McNeil decision is not THE reason, but to me it is the last straw on top of a pile of many decisions we have questioned in IGTs this year.
I'm not sure if any other manager could turn this team around. But I'd like to see someone else get a chance.

Jeff McNeil this season in the minors vs. righties: .376 / .440 / .710 // 1.150
Jeff McNeil this season in the minors vs. lefties: .238 / .324 / .333 // .658

I mean, sure, find a new manager. But not over yesterday's lineup.

Point taken. I had read that he had "improved" VS lefties, but had not seen the numbers.

OE:
Then again, check out Mickey's quote in the bottom of this article:
https://nypost.com/2018/08/01/what-is-s ... st-season/

t’ll be on the rookie skipper Callaway, who has two years left on his contract but already has seen the departure of the man who hired him, Sandy Alderson, to ensure this team doesn’t fully pack it in. He has seen Michael Conforto rediscover himself in the second half, he dropped the slumping Brandon Nimmo to the sixth spot in Wednesday’s lineup, and he praised rookie Jeff McNeil for hanging with Nats reliever Ryan Madson in a nine-pitch strikeout.

“You want these young players to continue to make adjustments,” Callaway said. “To battle like McNeil. Baseball played the right way by young players that are getting a chance up at the major league level.”

Benching McNeil seems to contradict when he says he wants done.

Come on.

McNeil will get plenty of opportunities. And if he succeeds, he'll get even more.

Hope you're right. I hope he plays so well that it will be impossible to take him out of the lineup.
I'm still recovering from TC who I used to (hyperbolically) say would have rather disemboweled himself with a rusty can opener than play a rookie over a veteran, so you see my concern.
