Mets on the move?

I didn't know if all the rumors and discussions about potentially trading away player fit in a particular thread, so please merge if this would fit better into another thread.

But I saw this note in a Cerrone post on Metsblog:

In terms of what the Mets are offering, Wheeler will net the best return, which is expected to still be something like a so-so, big-league player and/or up to two of that team's Top 15-30 prospects (who are not overall Top 100 guys).

If all we can get for a young pitcher with decent stuff making close to the minimum and still under team control is a so-so player and a prospect who can hope to become a so-so player, why would we deal him? It's not like he's a salary dump.

I get a trade if its going to improve the club. But it seems like we have so-so players aplenty.

I won't move Wheeler for anything less than Carlos Beltran.

Agreed. I don't think Wheeler is making close to the minimum, but it's still affordable.

I don't think we should trade any of our guys under control (Wheeler, Matz, Flores) unless we get significant returns.

Re: Mets on the move?

Pundit talk and percentages of likelihood of being traded. Familia at 95 percent.

Re: Mets on the move?

I'm prepared to be totally underwhelmed with the return of anybody we trade.

The guy I go back and forth on is Matz. I'm sure we won't get anything significant, but I have no confidence that he'll stay healthy. So I don't know whether to trade him for basically anything in return, or hold on to him and hope he's righted his health issues.

Cabrera and Familia are both very good, but I'm not sure trading very good gets you that much back these days. But they'll probably get something useful at least. I'm never particularly whelmed by minor leaguers, and they're almost definitely not getting a Wheeler back or something like that.

Re: Mets on the move?

wheeler is making $1.9M with one more year of arbitration before he's a free agent going into '20.

i don't trust Matz even a little. I think he'd be very attractive to the right team and maybe never worth more than right now

Re: Mets on the move?

I just know that the second the Mets trade Matz is when he goes Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy and ends up going to the All Star Game a couple of times.

Re: Mets on the move?

while of course I have concerns about Matz, I've also seen some pitchers overcome a lot of injury problems early on and wind up with great careers (schilling and Leiter come immediately to mind; i'm sure there are many others). He has enough injuries and inconsistency to depress his value on the market, but he is a high-upside LHP, so I wouldn't give up on him for just a warm body or 2.

Re: Mets on the move?

The Mets may have just lost the most obvious suitor for Familia when the Indians gave up their top prospect to get Brad Hand. Hand has the obvious advantage of two years under control plus a team option (the Indians also got Adam Climber, a promising set up guy with five years of control), but maybe with Hand off the market Familia becomes the most desirable reliever.
