Zach Britton to the Yanx

Orioles deal their once good but now struggling LH closer to the Bronx.
Like Familia he is a FA at the end of the year. Be interesting to see what the price for this one is.

Two years ago he pitched to an ERA of 0.45 and a WHIP of 0.84 while finishing 4th in the CY
This season is a more pedestrian 3.45/1.34 and was no longer closing

oe: Right-handers Dillon Tate, who is the Yankees' No. 9-ranked prospect, and Cody Carroll, who's ranked No. 15, and Triple-A left-hander Josh Rogers are in the package for Britton, according to sources.
The Orioles were still reviewing medical records, a source told MLB.com, so it was unlikely a deal would be announced on Tuesday night.

Twitter is saying that the Orioles got more for Britton than the Mets got for Familia. Maybe so (even though Will Toffey homered tonight for Binghamton so he's clearly great) but Britton is better than Familia, the Orioles were probably disinclined to trade within the division and there might have been a bigger demand for Britton.

Re: Zach Britton to the Yanx

Britton is recovering from an injury and is not better than Familia right now (he’s certainly not a safer bet over the next two months), but he is left handed. Wall and Carrol are similar pitchers at this point, with nothing left to prove at AAA. This means the Orioles got a top-10 (but high risk) prospect plus a potentially serviceable lefty, where the Mets got an underachieving third baseman and slot money. It’s very difficult to place a value on the slot money, but $1M is quite a bit of it and Rogers has limited upside. Tate has a ton of upside, but it has taken him three years for him to stay healthy long enough to graduate AA and he’s not being lights out about it. Toffey doesn’t have the same upside, but he can do better than the underwhelming numbers he’s put up so far this year.

The Orioles came out with a better take at first glance due to Tate’s upside, but not overwhelmingly so.

They should've paid Britton's salary then to get better prospects.

More "Lets see how this trade return compares to Familia's":

Before the 2017 season, the Rays signed Nathan Eovaldi to a 2-year deal following TJ surgery.
He didn't pitch at all in '17 and has a 93 ERA+ (4.26 ERA/4.28 FIP) in 58 innings this year.
His salary this year is $2M, so the Red Sox are on the hook for whatever the pro-rated remainder of that is, less than half anyway.

The Rays got the Red Sox #15 prospect for him, a 24-year old lefty who has a 2.89 ERA and has struck out 117 batters in 87.1 innings at AAA this year. Pretty goddamn good haul, I'd say!
