Breaking news, yall. Cubbies going for it. Nationals apparently waving the white flag.

Wow!

That means, among other things, that anyone signing him this winter won't have to lose a draft pick.

That provision doesn't get traded with him then?

does it? Mets offered him one and you're not allowed two, or does that get reset because that was the old CBA? I lose track of timing.

Re: Muffy to the Cubs

As part of the most recent CBA, you can't make a QO to a player that's acquired during the season. But you're right, the once-per-career thing may have already been in effect anyway.

And, why does it seem like every time we see something attributed to Jon Heyman, he has a different employer?

Not sure Muff would have commanded a QO anyway. I think the Nats were ready to move on even before dealing him.
He'll turn 34 during opening week of 2019 and has looked decidedly less mobile (not that he was twinkletoes to start with) since missing close to a half season following 'micro-fracture' knee surgery.
On the other hand, it looks like he can still hit [.300/.341/.442 in not quite 200 2018 ABs] even if he's having more trouble than ever preventing hits and/or running his own out.

I assume the Cubs will use him extensively as a PH (nice bat to have off your bench for the next six weeks AND in October) but also to fill in at 3B where Kris Bryant has been out for a while, or they'll
move someone else to 3B (with Madden at the helm it could be anyone) and let Murph play some 2B

He'd make a helluva DH if they make the WS.

Nats also let Matt Adams go to Cards on waivers.

Think they'd trade Bryce Harper for Steven Matz?

The Nats did reportedly try to work a trade for Harper (though maybe not that one), but nothing came of it and he can finish his current contract in Washington.

Actually, if they've given up on the season AND have decided (or been told) that they're not going to sign Harper in the off-season, then they'd probably jump at the idea ... which is why we shouldn't.

But considering that, as poorly as the Nats have played at times, they seem incapable of playing their way out of contention, it's kind of surprising how much dumping they've already done.

And, probably not be coincidence, the Cubs are in Detroit for a series starting tonight.
Report quickly Daniel.

The cost for Muffy btw, for those of you who like to judge how this may translate into other deals, is Andruw Monasterio, a 21 y/o, no-power Venezuelan infielder currently playing at High-A (Fla St Lg)
plus a PtbNL or cash (in other words: more, but not much more).

The Dodgers have been named as the team who reportedly claimed, but then failed to work out a deal for, Bryce Harper.

I was betting on the Mets.

Can you imagine Harper's leverage without even the draft pick compensation to hold him back?

Re: Muffy to the Cubs

I guess the Dodgers chose not to offer Washington more than the draft pick was worth. But they made sure nobody else could trade for Harper either.

Matt Adams is not a bad player to get for nothing.

I should probably enjoy this less than I do.

Re: Muffy to the Cubs

Two years ago, Murph lost the batting crown to a guy that played half his games in Coors Field by one point. Last year, Murph lost the batting crown to a Colorado Rockie by 11 points, finishing second both years. In a fair world, Murph should be the two-time defending NL batting champ.

And now he's got the bad luck to be hitting FA-gency a year too late.
Now, granted, it'll his second go-around at it, but still ...
