Beginning of the end for the Daily News?

Lays off half of the editorial staff.

Unless it was an incredibly bloated staff, I don't see how you can generate worthwhile content with so few people. It won't be journalism; it will be click bait.

The Post loses buckets of money, too, but Rupert doesn't care. It's all about owning the megaphone.

A shame.

Re: Beginning of the end for the Daily News?

The above article mentions the departures of Botte, Harper and Isola. No offense to those guys, but the real loss on the sports side is that of Christian Red, who's been doing terrific features and investigative work a long time without fanfare. Did a stirring 50th anniversary remembrance of Gil Hodges taking over earlier this year, revisited the Terry Pendleton game on its 25th anniversary last year and, though I no longer remember all the details, impressively profiled Pedro Martinez early in his Met tenure. Based on my briefest of interactions with him, a real gentleman as well.

Hell of a way for a paper to near its centennial.

Also allows the Fox element to report their downfall as directly related to their anti-Trump positions and cover art.

When I came to NYC in 1994 the Daily news was a great link to the city, I confess to not having bought it in years.

it was clearly the METS BASHING that caused the failure of the paper. they were easily the most anti-met and pro-yankee of the local papers. fuck them!

Re: Beginning of the end for the Daily News?

The Daily News was a daily fixture in my house growing up, but it's been years since I picked up a copy. I'll occasionally read it on line, usually Isola for his Knick and anti-Dolan takes. (Related, I'll start a rumor: Isola to FAN to replace Joe Benigno).

Dondi!!

My parents subscribed to the Daily News and Newsday when I was a kid, and I'd read them back cover to front, every day. (We got the Long Island Press before it left, and later the Post for a while and the Times.) Inspired a love of newspapers and a career! I haven't read it closely since moving out of state in 1990 so not sure about the anti-Mets and Trump stuff. But It's sad to see these institutions fall.

It's essentially been a click bait site for a while now.
News? Politics? ... Maybe.
Kardashians? ... Several articles per day.

Wow. Just looked at it. Main photo is two guys with their pants down and I think one of them is Sacha Baron Cohen. Not a lot of real new York news there.

Re: Beginning of the end for the Daily News?

The 'pro-Yanqui' slant stemmed from the Torre days when he was a major (read: paid) spokesman for the paper from virtually Day One of his tenure. Also around that time began the NYDN writer as a daily guest in the broadcast booth (plug, plug, plug) until it got to where the team and paper became so intertwined it was hard to think about one without connecting it to the other.
And while I'm sure all involved will claim that nothing in that relationship affected the coverage, just the optics of it were enough to where even non-paranoid sports fans (there are a few I believe) were right to question whether the scribes were pressured to soft-pedal NYY news and/or take a tougher stance on NYM news due to each side having a financial interest in the other.

And, as always, there was Bill Maddon.

Re: Beginning of the end for the Daily News?

When I was a young fan before driving age, when my family would go downtown I’d always go in the News Agency to buy any issues of the Daily News for Mets news. The ‘old guy’* in there would look baffled but sometimes even give me earlier days editions for free.

They were the out of town issues. I don’t know what difference there was. I just know The Daily News was the one I liked as a teenaged out of towner

Keep in mind, this was a classic 80s corporate-raider-styled borrow/buy/liquidate maneuver by the wrecking crew at Tronc.

wasn't the paper already failing before Tronc took over? i think they acquired it for nothing and the previous owner was just happy to be rid of the debts. not really a "corporate raid" and they certainly TRIED to keep the thing afloat for a few years before resorting to this.

That's correct. I believe they bought it for $1 plus the assumption of the debts.

It's sad, but the newspaper business is terminal unless you have deep pockets or other businesses to subsidize it. Newspapers never figured out the internet; they gave everything away for free initially and never quite figured out how to make people pay for their content. Certain papers (WaPo, NYT, WSJ) are prestigious enough to get away with paywalls and digital subscriptions. Most other papers can't pull it off.

One of my son's friends got a job covering University of Missouri sports for the Kansas City Star. He was a journalism major at Mizzou, but I don't see how he can make a living at it. He's a kid, and they're paying him peon wages. And job security is minimal. He's a good writer, though. You read his stuff and you forget he's a 22-year-old with an acne problem.

Re: Beginning of the end for the Daily News?

Well, part of raiding is taking advantage of an over-leveraged operation.

This comes shortly after Tronc paid out $15 million in go-away money to their gropey CEO.

When my paper when though its changes, all but two of the photographer posts were eliminated. We were all given iPhones and were told to take our own photos. What was kind of frustrating was that we actually leaned more on photography since all web stories needed to have a photograph. Then, once we learned that clicking on a photo counted as a separate click -- and we had to meet click goals -- we were creating more and more galleries to go with stories.

Some of us got pretty good with an iPhone, but its not a comparison to the work our best, award-winning photographers were creating.

Then we started getting into iPhone videos....

Re: Beginning of the end for the Daily News?

My Dad used to get the Daily News. There was a newspaper/smoke shop in Stamford that got the Sunday paper on Saturday night so it was our Saturday night tradition to pick it up. I was always amazed that one could just leave the coins that covered on the cost of the paper on the counter and not even have to pay the clerk directly. I remember Dondi on the cover of the comics but always skipped over it to the funny comics.

Dick Tracy was on the cover of the Sunday color comics section. Dondi was on the last or back page of that section.

I also skipped Dick Tracy. I was not aware that it was unintentionally hilarious at that age.
