Re: Solve this mystery. Win a prize.

But what's the BABIP for visiting teams at Citi Field? If that's lower than average as well, then it's not a Mets thing, but a Citi Field thing. The Mets roster has turned over a lot in the ten seasons they've been at Citi Field. It's hard to believe that the problem, whatever it is, is about which uniform the hitter is wearing.

Re: Solve this mystery. Win a prize.

Interesting:

This year, for instance, Mets hitters have seen more shifts than any team in the National League. Overall, only the Angels, Rangers and Blue Jays—also-ran teams in the American League—face more shifts. The Mets also hit more pop-ups than any team in baseball, which are killers to BABIP.

I think we *know* that the composition of the lineup is weird, but those seem like telling stats.

It's hard to believe that an "intelligent" writer would leave this key piece of information out of the article.

That's exactly what I thought when I read that post. That can't be the answer because it's so obvious. So can we look up visitors' BABIP at Citi Field? Stadium splits, anyone?

Re: Solve this mystery. Win a prize.

I don't know why we're mostly ignoring 2009-2012 (because it refutes Verducci's point a bit probably)

But 2013+ Mets BABIP at Citi is .270. The Nationals is .280. Marlins somehow is .324? ATL and PHI at .310 and .311.

There doesn't seem to be anything here. The Nats in 2015 were particularly bad at this, but even 9 games is really a tiny sample and more to do with the Mets beating them than luck.

The Mets individual seasons since 2013 all are clumped inthe middle. 2013 was the Mets worst BABIP season by sOPS where they were 91% as good as the league at BABIP in Citi Field.

2016 was the best where they wre 108% as good as the league at Citi Field.

More likely because Citi's outfield walls were moved in after 2012. The original dimensions were so drastically different than the current dimensions that 2009-12 was essentially a different stadium.

it wasn't _that_ drastic, and regardless I'm not sure how that would affect disparate BABIP.

Re: Solve this mystery. Win a prize.

I like how Verducci also draws the exact opposite conclusion he should. He seems to think the Mets shouldn't be signing slow fly-ball guys despite the numbers suggesting that quick ground-ball guys that generally rely on BABIP for value WOULD BE HAVING THEIR NUMBERS SUPRESSED by the park.

In fact, If Citi Field is making defense easier, it validates in a way Alderson's decision to poo-poo defense.

Re: Solve this mystery. Win a prize.

Wild speculation but CitiField being a completely artificial, manufactured, made for TV place where the fans aren't even trusted to enjoy themselves without prompting from the PA is somehow to blame. Fucking Billy Joel singalongs!

Also maybe the twin ugly scoreboards, which aren't even twins, plays a role as Roessler mentioned.

Yeah but then it wouldn't be even near the worst, given places like the Coliseum and Citizen's Bank Ballpark.

Agreed on all the PA prompting. "Everybody clap yo hands..." Omg. Shoot me. I can do without Piano Man too. 8th inning singalongs don't have to be a thing. Remember when they used to play Sweet Caroline? That was embarrassing.

Too many ads for my taste. But the scoreboards, I'm ok with. Sure, a bit big, and the ad space could be greatly reduced, but it's not like they block out a great view of the skyline or something.

It's a shame that new Citi couldn't have been closer to Manhattan. Like LIC or something. Those cities that put the skyline in the background and put the stadium near fun areas got it right. I think the stadium is beautiful. Just the area around it sucks.

José Reyes takes an atrocious cut at a pitch while adorned in his home uniform, the costume associated
with a suspiciously high rate of futile flailing during Citi Field's 10-year history.

I remember thinking (and perhaps posting) that Long Island City would be a great location for the Shea replacement. The Mets not only were unimaginative in the design of the stadium (making it look like Ebbets Field) but also in its location. Citi's actual location does have its advantages, though, with access to the Grand Central Parkway, the LIE, the LIRR, and the 7 train.

Re: Solve this mystery. Win a prize.

The real problem for a Mets stadium is that it can't face the skyline unless they played on the west side of Manhattan or in NJ, or I guess, play all their games in the morning.

Re: Solve this mystery. Win a prize.

well, eventually. EVENTUALLY. the area around Citi will be 'cool'. Ish at least. They've leveled the chop shops at least. it's only a matter of time before we have an Applebees and a generic irish bar right?

Or like, a good bar/grill and some cool stuff?

We've got a brewery. great start.

Oooh. Applebee's. How cool. I can't wait. Maybe we'll get a Burger King, too. And then a cellphone store.

Re: Solve this mystery. Win a prize.

Flushing Bay is right there. I'm sure there's tons of red tape, but it would be nice to make us of that area. Make it like a South Street Seaport or something like Fisherman's Wharf in SF. Basically Baltimore showed us all how to do it but no one seems to be able to follow suit.

Looks like Verducci failed to look up some of the most obvious clues. Real sloppy.
