Masters of fWar

Hey, kids, is your favorite Met one of the top 100 players at his position?

OF ALL TIME?!

Well, maybe and maybe not. But, I figured, Fangraphs should have an opinion. So I looked at how they ranked the top 100 recipients of their proprietary stat of fWAR. Hey, it's not the last word on anything, but it's Fangraphs' word, and they're pretty smart over there.

If you'd like to play please guess which Mets fill the blanks below.

RULEZ and REGULASHUNZ
1) One guess per post, no consecutive guessing.
2) WHEN you guess, PLEASE say which slot you're guessing. Like: "The number 38 all-time shortstop must be Tim Bogar."
3) You get 300 points for a correct guess, minus the number of slots you miss. So if you say. "The 36th all-time leftfielder is Joe Shlabotnik," and Joe is on the list, but at 86th, rather than 36, you get 250 points.
4) Minus 100 points for an incorrect guess.
5) BONUS: A handful of guys are ranked at more than one position, which you may notice by the same fWAR score appearing on more than one list. I don't know how those nudniks at Fangraphs divided things up. It's not like guys who switched positions mid-career have their scores broken up. They'll have the same score on two lists. IF YOU WANT TO SCORE BIG POINTS, feel free to guess one guy at multiple positions, like "Jack Armstrong is the #11 pitcher AND the #78 rightfielder." You can only score big if you invoke it as a double guess.

Guess away.

Re: Masters of fWar

I think there's a glitch in your scoring method. If Tim Foli, say, is the #5 pitcher, and a contestant guesses Tim Foli as the # 15 pitcher, you credit that as a correct score and award 290 points, even though the guess is really wrong or partially correct, at best. But the points you award gives away the correct answer. Anyone can now figure that Foli is either 5 or 25.

Left fielder: 5 Rickey Henderson

The one and only.

I'll go with Seaver, as the 6 SP.

A terrific answer, but not quite a franchise-quality answer. That's 295 points for you.

John Franco. Relief pitcher #6.

Not quite so lofty, but yeah.

#2 catcher - Yogi

Also not quite so high, but even Napoleon had his Watergate.

Warren Spahn --- SP:11

He probably was at some point, but now he's tumbled to #24.

First Base # 12 Eddie Murray

That's about as steady an answer as you can give.

I think there's a glitch in your scoring method. If Tim Foli, say, is the #5 pitcher, and a contestant guesses Tim Foli as the # 15 pitcher, you credit that as a correct score and award 290 points, even though the guess is really wrong or partially correct, at best. Well, the idea is that Foli comes off the board.

I'm holding off on Piazza, though, until our guesser follows up with a slot.

Man, but Foli could pitch.

Also, as far as penalties, subtracting 100 for an outright miss is harsh. If you guess that Angel Berroa is #98, but it turns out he's #103, you'll only get docked five points.

I'll say one of the #5 catchers is Gary Carter.

The Kid, amazingly, is still hot tonight. Fangraphs has him at #2.

Gary Carter---C:5

A minute too late. Maybe seconds. No penalty strokes, though.

Billy Wagner - reliever #11

#11 isn't even a Metly slot. (It's Lindy McDaniel's, by the way.) But you get beaucoup points for #6.

Pedro Martinez---P:15

Vote for Pedro. Number 15 he is, despite far fewer innings than the pitchers before and behind him.

Robin Ventura 3rd base #25

Actually, he's all the way up at #21. He's ranked far lower as a boxer, though.

CF #9. - Beltran

And that's despite coming from an inaccessible island.

I think there's a glitch in your scoring method. If Tim Foli, say, is the #5 pitcher, and a contestant guesses Tim Foli as the # 15 pitcher, you credit that as a correct score and award 290 points, even though the guess is really wrong or partially correct, at best. Pilot error is the answer to the question about the orders. Fix't now.

Darryl comes in at 52. You get 283 points. Which is about how many homers Strawberry hit if you don't count the Yankees.

I'm gonna say 3B #21 is Wright.

In another world, certainly. But this world has spine injuries, and he hangs 'em up at #27.

I was going to ask Edgeward for a ruling on situations like this. I guessed Ole at #27. Does he then go off the board, or can someone else answer Olerud in a different position before Edgy gives the answer? And then closest one gets the points?

And while I'm here, I'll guess big sexy Bartolo Colon at #62.

I'd presume that Olerud's off the board because the scoring system awards points for an Olerud guess even if that guess slots Olerud incorrectly. Otherwise, I could submit Willie Mays over and over in every CF slot and score points for each Mays guess.

There's no closest to provision in the rules.
