IGT 09/26 - Braves at Mets - Newcomb @ deGrom

I'm watching Ozzie Virgil, Sr., and Amed Rosario talking about transitioning from a Dominican background into professional baseball. Ozzie was supposedly the first ever.

Sheesh, Ozzie was mentored by Willie Mays and Wes Westrum, and got both his first hit and first homer off of Robin Roberts, and he's still working in baseball.

Nimmo 2018 has now started in every slot in the batting order except cleanup.

Nimmo 2017 started in every slot in the batting order except ninth.

Does that make him, Agbayani, Shinjo the only guys who've started in every slot?

McNeilio makes a sweet dive to the backhand and gets the out, and he leads off next inning.

Let's get JdG some runz.

So that's scored as a K, plus a passed ball, and then a 4-3 putout ... I guess
It would be a weird play in which to lose a perfect game but lose it you would since the batter reached 1st base safely.

Dwight Gooden 1985's 1.53 ERA looks safe, but deGrom has moved well ahead Tom Seaver 1971's 1.77.

Looks like he's now down to 1.71.

Mickey didn’t handle that well. He could have had deGrom start the 9th, face one batter, and leave to a giant ovation. I think that would have been the far preferable way to handle that decision.

Re: IGT 09/26 - Braves at Mets - Newcomb @ deGrom

A co-worker told me today he read that if the Mets had scored four runs a game for him, he would have been 30-0 and if they'd scored three runs per game, he would have been 20-5.
He didn't say where he saw that, and realized that at least in some of those games, he would have been replaced by a reliever who would have blown the lead. I guess those were "coulds" instead of "woulds".
But still, that is amazing.

Yeah, that's not quite accurate (see my post in the 'Blasphemers' thread) as deGrom didn't even last the required 5 innings in two different starts this season so there's no way he could have won those.
I got him as 21-1 w/10 No decisions in his starts although even that is assuming that the game situation doesn't change after he left the game (ie. no blown games by the pen)

No doubt. Safely in the top 5 of Mets pitching seasons. Better than several of Seaver’s.

Anyone have mlb.tv want to make a gif for me if you can? Inciarte bat-flipped his pop-up in the top of the 4th, and I thought it was funny.

Game of the year at Citi Field tonight. I love a night when everybody who went out of their way to be there (as opposed to people who were handed tickets and looked at their phones) is committed to the "A" storyline. For scale, it was comparable to Dickey earning his 20th. Hell, 10 is the new 20.

Here's to Jake, Pitcher of the Year, Met of the Decade.

I know we've beaten this horse to death, but even with the Mets average run support (4.23 runs a game) he could literally have gone 30-0. (The one game where he gave up four, and his one-inning start in Philly being the exceptions.)

It will be interesting to see how this season is remembered in Mets history. '85 Gooden triggers incredible memories for me. It was an amazing season, and although I considered myself a Mets fan before, I think it wasn't until 1985 that I became a fan at this level. It still hurts to think of that last game in St. Louis, but I think I've since justified it as making 1986 even better. (though I would have loved to see '85 Gooden tear up the post-season. Wow)

On the other hand, I barely remember Dickey's Cy Young season. In fact, I'm not even sure what year it was. 2013? 2012? There are times I forget it even happened.

This season, as much as I am in awe of what deGrom did, I can't help but feel incredible frustration that the Wilpon's finances deprived us of a great pennant race. It's so incredibly wrong.
