You're the Mets manager. It's the 162nd game of the season, and you're getting a surprising dose of offense. It's 9-4 after four innings. You feel relatively secure, but your starting pitcher has hit his pitch limit, and the game has no bearing on the standings. It's time to go your pen, and you realize that you're giving a gift to whoever you call on first. All he has to do is pitch an inning or two without getting his head handed to him, and he gets a candy-coated win. Do you:

Good poll! Had deGrom not won the other night, I’d give it to him. But he doesn’t need the win now to have a winning record. He can only be hurt.

Sewald, however, needs the win in the worst way. Get the monkey off his back and send him into the offseason on s high note.

Neither.
I don't want DeGrom to pitch a clunker, even for one inning and spoil him in the perception of a casual Cy Young voter who hasn't seen him all season.
And, I still want to win the game, and that lead isn't safe enough to put in Sewald.
I initially voted DeGrom, but I'd like to delete my vote if I could.

I don't care at all about Paul Sewald getting a win, but I wouldn't use deGrom. I think the potential negatives outweigh the positives. A cheap win, or a bad inning where he gives up five earned runs, damages his ERA and causes his last impression to be a bad one?

It's a trick question because Sewald would have his head handed to him and blow the lead.

JdG probably didn't "prepare" himself for an outing over the last couple days, so not him.

This might turn off some on the fence voter from voting for deGrom. But my main point would be that the 5th inning pitcher doesn't automatically get the win even if the Mets hold the lead all the way. When the starter doesn't pitch five innings, it's a judgment call where the official scorer can give the win to any pitcher but the starter.

That's why I included the not-having-his-head-handed-to-him codicil.
