Just not smart.

The Mets nominee for the Marvin Miller award was announced today.

Each team has a nominee.

Selected by teammates.

It’s an award that will go to the player who “inspires others to higher levels of achievement by their on-field performances and contributions to their communities.”

The Mets’ nominee is Jose Reyes.

Well, Lenny Dykstra isn't eligible this season.

Re: Just not smart.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the Mets players know more about each other than we do

That is fair.

But I do know that only one of them has served a suspension for domestic violence.

Well, at least one other member of the 2018 team did.

It's a player vote, so it's a popularity contest, which means I'm neither surprised nor particularly put off by it.

He must have contributed a lot to his community?

If the Wilpons made such a tone deaf move people would scream bloody murder. different standard for the players?

Re: Just not smart.

It's _all_ players, not just Mets players.

It's bad, and a bad sign of how not-seriously other players take these things. But I also imagine that this isn't something players pored over. "Hey, this guy is probably done, and he wasn't whiny about it was it? I played with him, he seems fun" boom. He's been around enough that he's played with a lot more people than probably anyone else. Popularity contest. That they didn't even think "ugh, the violence thing. I'll just check Flores." is it's own incitement of course.

The terrible optics notwithstanding, it's at least possible that his teammates saw Reyes making efforts to better himself, to an extent that the average fan would never have access to.

That's possible. But that still doesn't make him a better person than the guy who didn't abuse his spouse in the first place.

I think this is more than an "optics" issue. It's about respect. It's disrespectful to other victims of domestic abuse to actually honor this guy. Forgive him? Sure. Give him a second chance. But to honor him. Big, big mistake. The players who voted have to be better than this.
