Let Us Trade Facts and Opinions on Patrick Corbin

Patrick Corbin has pretty nerdy name. He also had 246 strikeouts this season which I have come to understand is a lot. That's the way you go into free agency.

I mean, yeah, it's a career season, but he missed 2014 with TJ surgery, and perhaps he's only just now rounding into full form, putting up his first All-Star year since the year before he got cut open.

He's a lefty from the Syracuse area, so I'm expecting fman to act as a recruiter a little bit. He lives and dies by the slider, and mostly he's been living and living the high life. I also expect the Yankees to make a run at him, so if the Mets want to be in the game, they may have to bid a little. He was every bit as good as his rotation-mate Zack Greinke this season, and possibly better, and Greinke is on a Hall of Fame track.

Corbin. Waddaya think?

irl, he's bent for the MFYs, would take an overpay to collect it seems.

I'm not convinced that he's a great bet neither. I want more baseline fire. To be honest there's no reason to go get pitchers unless it's a dramatic upgrade and a guy who is or can be great.

Corbin was Cy Young caliber in this, his 28 year old season. Which makes this thread pointless. Because Wilpons. Corbin's Barney's. The Mets shop at Sears.

He wasn't Cy Young caliber in a league that has Jake DeGrom. But he has been solid. The catch is that he grew up a Yankee fan in a Yankee family, and the Yankees need starting pitching badly. The match seems so obvious it would be shocking if it didn't happen. But perhaps he'll get snubbed and turn into the Yankees equivalent of a comic book supervillain. That's when we pounce.

I think the MFYs will sign two starting pitchers. And I think Corbin will be one of them.

Had a great year last year. Have no idea what the analytics people think.

I would say this is less of a MFY town than it was when we moved here in 2000. The 2015-2016 successes brought a lot of local Mets fans out of the woodwork and the new Syracuse Mets affiliation will do more of the same.

He does get good local media coverage, being a graduate of Cicero-North Syracuse High School which is maybe 10 miles north of where I live.

Whether or not Corbin was Cy Young caliber's got nothing to do with how well deGrom or anybody else pitched last season. Still, I'll concede the point and instead, say that Corbin was all-star caliber. The main point of my post, about the total unlikelihood that the Mets sign him because they're bargain basement hunters and Corbin won't be a bargain stands.

I guess we could have that disclaimer for any of the elite free agents.

I think we'll know pretty early during the offseason if the Mets plan to play in the upper market. In the past few years I feel like they've telegraphed their intentions pretty clearly. I imagine after the new GM is hired, we'll hear whether they intend to jump into the thick of things, or if we get fed a stream of excuses.

I'm certain they can do plenty without a GM. And so can we.

Sure, they certainly can. They've been doing plenty without one since June. But I don't think they will.
