World Series Rooting Interest, part deux

Los Angeles Dodgers 5 votes

When I polled the group (and we know how painful that can be), 6 of 19 voters picked Boston-LA as their WS of preference, so good for you getting what you wanted.

Let's do it again: Who do you want to win the World Series? "I Don't Care" is not an option. Note: this isn't your prediction, just hoping.

I voted for Boston. Normally I'd select the NL team but the Dodgers annoy me, especially Bellinger. And they have Utley. Every BOS success upsets MFY fans so there's the schadenfreude factor (why isn't that a game show?). I'd rather watch a Scottsdale Scorpions game but this is all we have at the moment.

This, except "annoy" is too mild.

Re: World Series Rooting Interest, part deux

I said in an earlier poll that I was likely to root for whichever NL team came out of this, if nothing else just to avoid recent repeats.
But often when I've got no specific rooting interest I just hope for a long, well-played series and then, somewhere along the line, I unconsciously find myself pulling for one side or the other.

On the one hand you've got the NL with an underdog team that hasn't won in 30 years vs a fan base that we wouldn't want to become entitled (oh wait!)
On the other you have the idea that the 108 win team 'deserves' it more than the squad winning just 92 games* and, of course, the whole MFY irritation factor

* although that's a factor which only seems to bother baseball fans. The 9-7 and 10-6 NY Giants beat the 16-0 and 12-4 Patriots in SBs and yet the whole 'repudiation of the regular season' thing is never cited

Gotta go for the National League team, though I violated that rule last year.

Don't really care. Voted Red Sox. I always used to root National League, but I deviated from that for the first time in 1985 and that freed me forever of any notion of loyalty to the NL.

Sawx; pretty much always go AL unless it's some skankee-type team.

I love the National League. It's most of the National League's teams I can't stand.

Go Red Sox.

I hate the Dodgers, and the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Go Sox.

Re: World Series Rooting Interest, part deux

I went through the decision thusly:

Do I have a grudge against either of these teams? Well, 1988, I guess, even though 30 years is probably past my grudge-holding statute of limitations. So advantage Red Sox.
Has one of them won a lot lately? 3 WS for the Sox in the last 15 years. So, advantage Dodgers.
Irritating-looking beards? Justin Turner vs. Craig Kimbrel. They're equally irritating. A push.
What would annoy Yankee fans more? Ooh, big advantage Red Sox.

So, go Boston. Even though I have to admit I won't watch much of this.

Fuck Chase Utley and anyone who shares a bench with him.

Knowing that a Sox win will irritate MFY fans helps, too.

Pretty easy choice. The Sox I love, the Dodgers I hate.

I went with the Red Sox too. All other things being even, the team that eliminates the MFY's in any postseason is pretty cool with me. Vanquishing them is usually enough to get my support the rest of the way. There are exceptions, of course. Last year Houston burned all its goodwill when they gave Gurriel a standing ovation.

I typically hate the Dodgers too, but they earned a lot of goodwill for me when they eliminated the Brewers and their Hader cheering fans (stop cheering racists folks, it's not that hard). So I wouldn't lose any sleep if these guys won it all too.

Hey WP, you don't love the Sox over the Mets right?

Final tally: 13 of 17 want Boston to win the WS.

Nope. My Boston-born kids were sticking their sharp elbows in my sides when I was cheering for the Mets at Fenway in September.

I rooted for both National League teams last year.

I lean with Boston this year only due to the Utley factor. Fuck him.

Re: World Series Rooting Interest, part deux

I like Boston because Ted Williams played for them and they have great uniforms and I still feel bad about 1975 and 1986 and I lived in Boston for a year and it was fine, though I didn't get out of the house much.

I don't dislike the Dodgers. Sandy Koufax played for them and they have nice uniforms too and 1988 was awful but that was the Mets' fault and Utley's a shithead, but shitheads come and go. But I don't especially like them either.

So Boston.

The Dodgers and Red Sox are big market teams that don't spend a lot of money on payroll. Also, they hardly ever sign top tier in their prime free agents.

He’s joking VT. There are a few guys on the board that don’t think budget matters.

I think the rule of thumb for Mets fans trying to determine which team to root for is to pick the team with the greater number of Mookies.

How awesome is Mookie Betts. Love everything about him and the way he plays. Terrific athlete, great defense, great attitude. Even his patchy beard.

Totally should have done the JCL proposed trade for Harvey a few years back.
