Re: Turning Japanese 2018

I think they typically do that in even-numbered years, don't they?

It's 2018. Can we let this phrase die?

I didn’t realize that Yusmeiro Petit was still playing!

Not the greatest constellation of stars, but a cool experience for Rosario!

I like these types of tours. Will look for some photos once they start playing.

I was merely thinking of the song by The Vapors. I was not aware of any other meanings or interpretations. However, I have modified this thread title.

Re: Turning Japanese 2018

Yankee players are clearly too important to go on such a trip.

Not a bad infield with Santana, Merrifield, Rosario and Suarez. Pitching can use some help - where's Tanaka?

Cool. Thanks bmfc!

The song meaning (depending on who you listen to) has been linked with equating masturbation faces with Asian facial features. Plus if anything has that "oriental" riff, you can assume that a lot of us hate it.

Basically if you grew up Asian American, the holy triumvirate of "Songs I can do Without" are Turning Japanese, Kung Fu Fighting, and China Girl. And I know that the last one was meant as a satire to racism, but that irony was lost on most of the population.

Good night for Rosario, going 3-for-4 with a homer, double and two runs scored.

Kind of. Iggy Pop wrote it when he was recording the idiot and had fallen hard for Kuelan Nguyen, girlfriend of French actor/singer Jacques Higelin, as the two of them were staying at the same chateau as Iggy and Bowie. She wasn't, as the name may suggest, Chinese at all, but Vietnamese-born.

To complicate matters a little more, Iggy ended up marry a young Japanese fan of his, and when Bowie remade the song, his video featured an Asian-Aussie model named Geeling Ng, whose name suggests a Cantonese background. Bowie ended up starting a torrid romance with her.

So, sure, it's satire, I guess, but those damn rock stars get to have it both ways, and Iggy's still kinda weird. Nile Rogers wrote the goofy fake-Asian movie-cue guitar line that became the hook on Bowie's hit version, which is one of the more satirical parts of the song, I guess.

Re: MLB-Japan "All Star" Series 2018

Apropos of nothing, The Vapors had a lot of songs just as good if not better on the NEW CLEAR DAYS LP, and so "Japanese" was something of a mixed blessing for them, sorta like Dolby's "Science" overshadowed his non-novelty work.

As they say, everybody I know makes the same mistakes.
