And some Yankees, including a disgraced owner. And, Joe Carter! I like him.

Re: Mets Davey Johnson and Orel Hersheiser on HoF ballot

“I think he is a Hall of Famer," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday. "Whether he has been inducted or not, I think it’s important that I believe that the committee and people who have the power to votes be hard pressed not to acknowledge this was a transformative figure in all of sports not just baseball so I can’t imagine that he doesn’t warrant a nomination. ... Bottom line he was very impactful for this franchise and industry and clearly a Hall of Famer from my viewpoint.”

I feel like I could break down this robotic, Kool-Aid-guzzling statement for about a month.

They misspelled "indicted." Don't newspapers use proofreaders anymore?

The only player on the list who has a legit HOF resume is Albert Belle, but he hated the press and didn't get their HOF support after his career. He was also a bat-corker and a violent jerk who had off-the-field issues (including DUI and indecent exposure arrest), so i've got no problem if he doesn't go in.

Frankly, Davey has the best case. He was an all-star 2b with a solid career and 2 WS titles, and then, as a mgr., he won another. He managed 5 teams and each one improved during his tenure, ending up with a good winning percentage, 6 1st place finishes, and 2 "manager of the year" awards (finishing in the top five 10 times during his 14 full seasons). Stylistically, an Earl Weaver disciple, he was a pioneer in the use of analytics (though they didn't call it that then).

How the ever-loving frig is Will Clark an option and Keith Hernandez isn't?

Because defense, especially from that era , is still grossly undervalued if it's even understood. Keith Hernandez was so far ahead of his time defensively that if he was born 35 years later and was playing today, he'd still be ahead of his time

And Joe Carter. That's a fucking joke, right?

Davey's case was stronger than I expected, with a top 20 in winning percentage.

What surprised me looking at win totals was that Bruce Bochey is a good season away from breaking the top 10.

Re: Mets Davey Johnson and Orel Hersheiser on HoF ballot

The unwritten rule with inducting managers has historically been that two championships get you in.

They've seemingly relaxed that with the likes of Earl Weaver (one championship plus a second one won by his team during the Altobelli Interregnum), and Whitey Herzog (one championship plus one lost on a lousy call).

So maybe Davey (one championship plus a terrible call in right field robbing his ass of a pennant and possibly a second championship) gets some consideration in a new light.

Championships aren't everything, though. Managers can only do what they can do.

Keith's chance to be reconsidered will come in a future ballot covering players who played mostly between 1970 and 1987. Will Clark is in whatever they define as the modern day.
