Tabloid Cover Derby 2018 (Year Four!)

The Tabloid Cover Derby is back!

In a press conference today at the subway station near Citi Field, it was announced that the 2018 Tabloid Cover Derby will get underway on Monday, November 5. This is the fourth year that America has been voting for the best Mets tabloid cover. Attending today's announcement was Hollywood superstar Mario Van Peebles and Mets ace pitcher Jerry Blevins, along with local Mets fans Daphne and Erika, holding a banner commemorating the three previous winning covers. Also attending were the officers of the Mets Canine Corps, from left to right is Trina (President), Cupcake (Treasurer) and Rambo (Vice President). This year's winning cover, as always, will be displayed in the lobby of the CPF's international headquarters, Kran Pool Forum Internationella Huvudkontoret in Stockholm, Sweden.

In 2015 and 2016, there were enough covers published to support 32 first-round polls. A dismal 2017 reduced that number to 16 first-round polls. In 2018, the number of Mets covers bounced back a bit, as did the team's won-lost record. This year there will be either 21 or 22 first-round polls, depending on how much off-season news the Mets make in October and November. The ten (or eleven) covers that get the highest percentage of votes in their first-round polls will get a second-round bye, while the remaining covers compete against each other for the right to advance.

It all starts on November 5, so stick around after the World Series! You'll be glad you did!

All other contests pale by comparison.
How did you get Rambo to show up? I thought he was on a book tour.

I started this thread on my phone where my screen was big enough only to contain the narrative, and so I imagined the photo as I read and it just kept getting better. Subway station... Mario Van Peebles (!) ... Daphne and Erika (!!!)... canine corps. (!!!!)...

And so, kudos to the writing as much as the shot. I also love the description "America has been voting" when it's like, 12 of us.

PREVIOUSLY ON THE TABLOID COVER DERBY

2015
Inaugural competition sees Daily News cover YES-PEDES defeat CON4TO!, also from the Daily News. Winning cover is unveiled at a ceremony in Stockholm, attended by David Wright, U.S. ambassador to Sweden Mark Brzezinski, Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and the ghost of Swedish actrees Ingrid Bergman. Cover later goes on world tour of great art museums, including the Louvre in Paris.

Total number of covers: 377 (Daily News 135, New York Post 124, Newsday 110)
Final Four: YES-PEDES (Daily News), CON4TO! (Daily News), TEAM OF DESTINY (Daily News), N.Y. CITI (New York Post)

2016
Second season of TCD announced in special ceremony featuring Rusty Staub and former Miss Sweden, Camilla Hansson. Daily News wins for the second year with CES BOOM BAH! defeating SEEDS OF LIFE from the New York Post in the final round. The 2016 ceremony takes place inside the Royal Palace in Stockholm. Terry Collins is joined by Sweden's Queen Silvia, CPF receptionist and Swedish reality show star Maja, children from the Järfälla branch of the Kran Pool Barn Klubb, and the ghost of Swedish actress Greta Garbo. Ceremony marred by unrest outside in the streets, with crowds protesting the early exit from the competititon of all urine-related Matt Harvey covers.

Total number of covers: 381 (Daily News 150, New York Post 117, Newsday 114)
Final Four: CES BOOM BAH! (Daily News), SEEDS OF LIFE (New York Post), 11th HEAVEN (Newsday), METS IN A LANDSLIDE (Daily News)

2017
With fewer covers, the third Tablod Cover Derby is downsized from 32 first-round polls to 16. For the first time this year, covers are seeded by first-round vote percentage instead of chronologically. Opening ceremony attended by Marty Silver, former Shea Stadium ticket booth worker, and Bev Donaldson, who had been employed at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm. Winning cover is again from the Daily News. GOD OF BLUNDER makes history as first bad-news cover to win competition. Winner is unveiled on a side street in Stockholm. On hand are Kingsport Mets mascot Slider (thanks to funds raised by school children of Sullivan County through car washes and bake sales); Family Ties star Tina Yothers; former ABBA member Agnetha Fältskog; CPF receptionist Maja; and the ghost of actress Cate Blanchett, who, curiously, is neither Swedish nor dead.

Total number of covers: 208 (Daily News 83, Newsday 67, New York Post 58)
Final Four: GOD OF BLUNDER (Daily News), IN THE BIG INNING (New York Post), TRESPEDES (Daily News), THANK YOU, CARDS (Newsday)

And we have our first three Round One winners.

Each of these covers will advance, either to the second round or directly to the third round, depending on their final ranking after all polls have closed.

Of these three, MICKEY'S CLUBHOUSE has the highest ranking and YOU NOAH NOTHING is at the bottom, but there are many precincts that have not yet been heard from.

I feel like there should be a wild card.

But then the wild card shouldn't get the same treatment as a poll winner, as it dilutes the sanctity of the poll. So maybe two wild cards, that square off before moving on against the poll winners.

But what if one of the wild cards gets a super high number of votes but it doesn't win because it was matched up against a historically great cover. Doesn't it deserve to advance more than a poll winner that gets like seven votes? I'm not saying you have to change anything, it's that it just seems unfair.

Maybe you could put all the covers in one pool and the ten covers that get the highest votes move on to the next round.

But if you've already voted, and we know who got the most votes, then don't you already have your champion? Do we need a playoff system at all?

Re: Tabloid Cover Derby 2018 (Year Four!)

The main purpose of the first round is to see the covers in chronological order which allows us to review the season's progress and also determine our first batch of winners. After that, it's a series of do-or-die, one-on-one, mano-a-mano matchups.

Any proposals to make this thing more complicated will not be considered. I'm already giving this as much effort as I care to. I'd rather stop doing it entirely than make it a chore.

Three more first-round winners:

The Daily News has now opened the Tabloid Cover Derby with a six-poll winning streak. Panic is beginning to be sensed in the dugouts of the Post and Newsday.

Each of these covers will advance, either to the second round or directly to the third round, depending on their final ranking after all polls have closed.

The ranking of our six winners so far is:

1. MATT OUTTA HELL (Daily News)
2. There IS crying in baseball (Daily News)
3. MICKEY'S CLUBHOUSE (Daily News)
4. TODD COUPLE! (Daily News)
5. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE (Daily News)

After being shut out of the first six polls, Newsday gets its first win in our seventh poll, and the New York Post does the same in the eighth poll. In the ninth, the Daily News resumes its winning ways.

With nine first-round winners so far, the Daily News has seven covers that will advance and the Post and Newsday have one each.

There will be 22 first-round polls. The ten winners with the highest percentage will get a second round bye. These latest three winners all happen to rank below the previous six.

Here's how our nine winners rank:

1. MATT OUTTA HELL (Daily News)
2. There IS crying in baseball (Daily News)
3. MICKEY'S CLUBHOUSE (Daily News)
4. TODD COUPLE! (Daily News)

We have three more winning covers to report, two from the Daily News and one from the New York Post.

With twelve first-round winners so far, the Daily News has nine covers that will advance, the Post has two, and Newsday has one.

There will be 22 first-round polls. The ten winners with the highest percentage will get a second round bye.

Here's how our twelve winners rank:

1. MATT OUTTA HELL (Daily News)
2. There IS crying in baseball (Daily News)
3. IT'S RAININ' METS (Daily News)
4. SWEEP SNAKES (New York Post)
5. MICKEY'S CLUBHOUSE (Daily News)
6. MIDNIGHT BADNESS (Daily News)
7. TODD COUPLE! (Daily News)
8. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE (Daily News)
9. WHERE THERE'S A WIL (Newsday)
10. GSELL THE MAN! (New York Post)
11. YOU NOAH NOTHING! (Daily News)
12. WHO'S UP FIRST? (Daily News)

Since it's now no longer possible for them to finish in the Top Ten, YOU NOAH NOTHING! and WHO'S UP FIRST? are guaranteed not to get a second-round bye and will have to try to fight their way into the third round.

Also:

We still have a tie in our 17th poll (2018 Tabloid Cover Derby Round 1.17 Jul 19 through Jul 23). Please vote if you haven't or make sure that your vote was registered if you think you did vote.

ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND

ELIMINATED

Our tiebreaker for Round 1.22 has ended, and Newsday's DEGROMINATION has won, knocking the Post's CY OF THE TIMES from the competition.

The New York Post is in a bad position in this year's Tabloid Cover Derby. They only have two of the 22 first-round winners. Newsday has a respectable total of six, and the Daily News is in good shape so far, with fourteen covers still alive.

Three of Newsday's surviving six covers feature Jacob deGrom, and those three are the only remaining deGrom covers. Along with DEGROMINATION, which will be up again for voting tomorrow, there's JAKE & RAKE, which is currently struggling in the 2.02 poll, and NATIONAL TREASURE, which we'll see again on Sunday.

The last poll from Round Two has closed, and we have now finalized our Sweet Sixteen.

We have ten covers from the Daily News, four from Newsday, and two from the New York Post.

There are two covers that feature Mickey Callaway, two that feature Wilmer Flores, and two for an Amed Rosario/Asdrubal Cabrera combination. And there's one each for Amed Rosario alone, as well as for Yoenis Cespedes, Michael Conforto, Jacob deGrom, Todd Frazier, Robert Gsellman, Matt Harvey, Brandon Nimmo, Rusty Staub, and David Wright.
