Mike Puma is talking about Martin Maldonado

The free-agent catching market is so thin the Mets already have a preferred option at the position.

According to an industry source, the Mets are showing strong interest in Martin Maldonado, whose representatives convened with team officials this week at the general managers’ meetings.

The 32-year-old Maldonado, who split last season between the Angels and Astros, lacks offensive pop — he posted a .627 OPS last season — but with the Mets placing an emphasis on starting pitching in 2019, he fits the description of somebody adept at handling a rotation, blocking balls in the dirt and throwing out base runners.

Mets already have realistic target for a pressing need

Meh. Might as well go with Plawecki and Nido, and I don't want to do that.

We need someone who can hit.

Re: Mike Puma is talking about Martin Maldonado

Apparently, he is a good defensive catcher. That would be a nice change.

Can any catcher really "stop the running game" with Noah and Matz on the mound?

You really got be high on catcher metrics to want Maldonado. I'll keep Plawecki's bat, thanks.

I guess bat isn't quite the right word.

I'll take his _Batting eye_ and his .330 OBP over the last two years. Sure, his overall numbers are roughly league average, but I'll take making fewer outs over the more nebulous catcher defense boost you'd get from Maldonado who can't hit a lick.
