Would you trade Conforto?

The reason why I bring it up is because of the elephant in the room that no one really wants to acknowledge yet. He is the one guy left on the team who has Boras as an agent and the relationship between Boras and the Mets does not look like it is getting any better.

Maybe you let him play out this year, hope he has a really good one, and flip him next winter when there is still two years of team control left? Or at the trade deadline if the Mets are out of it again? Start 2019 with Conforto/Lagares/Nimmo in the outfield with Bruce at first base with the view of getting to the beginning of 2020 at the very latest with a Cespedes/Nimmo/Bruce outfield with Alonso at first.

The relationship between Boras and the Mets isn't a major factor. The key thing is that virtually all of Boras' clients test free agency, and there's no reason to think that it will be any different with Conforto.

But to answer the question, yes, of course you consider trading Conforto if the deal is right.

If I agreed with that, then I would not have started the thread. I suppose that goes without saying.

True, but two things. . .
a) Will the Mets get a fair shake to bid on him once that happens or will the Boras's mistrust (possibly dislike) of BVW and the Wilpons render that as not being possible?

b) Do they want that type of uncertainty with a player that would otherwise be a young building block?

Re: Would you trade Conforto?

Boras has dealt with the Mets in the past and in the present and he will continue to do so in the future.
For the team to shed players because he's their agent would be as unlikely, and as stupid, as it would be for Boras to eliminate teams based on not being buddy-buddy with their owners or GMs

You look to trade Conforto is that will help the team and you keep him if that helps the team.

That should be the first reply to every future "Should we trade ..... ?" question. (Except for Flores, of course, who should be a Met for life)

Re: Would you trade Conforto?

I wouldn’t.

Let’s examine our areas of need. Bullpen. No fucking way I trade Conforto for a relief pitcher.

Starting pitching is a relative strength compared to our lineup. So it doesn’t make sense to deplete our offense even further.

So if we are trading Conforto for offense, I’d look for a young, middle of the lineup guy who get on base and hits for power. Team control for a few years.

So basically I’d be looking for Conforto.

I guess if Ces comes back we could look for someone who fills a need better than a lefty hitting corner OF. But the Rockies are not trading Arenado for him, and Bryant isn’t coming either.

So no. I wouldn’t trade Conforto.

Re: Would you trade Conforto?

Well, I think you need to always consider a THEORETICAL trade of anyone.
But, yeah, with Conforto the payback of someone who'd be considered both available and an upgrade is limited. Some kind of 'challenge trade' perhaps where we'd get an infielder of similar age/control/talent
from a team needing OF help, or maybe even a true high-OBA CF from a team more interested in a power/corner guy. But no one fitting either of those roles immediately comes to mind.
And what you certainly DON'T do is deal him because you're afraid of what his agent might think three years from now, especially since it's not in the agent's interest to preemptively scuttle negotiations.

Re: Would you trade Conforto?

I don't think this is the elephant in the room.

And I don't think the Mets have a bad relationship with Scott Boras or his agency. Certainly not one that would lead Boras to guide his clients away from the Mets if they had the best offer.

I do understand the issue, but at the same time, if the Mets offer the most deal to a Boras client, he'll take it. Not worried.

Re: Would you trade Conforto?

yah the whole Boras-hates-the-Mets thing is a negotiatiing tactic, certainly not a reason to surrender a guy.

That said I'd trade the guy for the right guy.

Exactly. The "rift" will last exactly as long as it takes for the Mets to spend money.

If the Mets make the highest offer, the hatchet will be buried. At least until the next time Boras wants them to spend. If they don't make a competitive offer, the barbs will continue.

And not for nothing, I'm not sure having a good relationship with Scott Boras exactly a good thing.

I'm sure Boras thought Tom Hicks was a super guy.

Re: Would you trade Conforto?

Again, I'm not against trading anybody in principle. I do not believe dealing Conforto would serve the interests of winning now, though. And the way to deal with Boras (or any agent) is to let them tell the media whatever they want and not to actually care. We've done plenty of good business with Boras in the past, and there is really no tangible evidence that things are any different now.

It's hard not to wonder if Boras' whining in more recent years is not a direct result of the Mets choosing Brodie's clients over his.

Weren't half the Nats Boras clients? They haven't been to the World Series in a while. Correction- ever.
