Holy crap, it's gonna be a Rivera suck-fest when the votes are announced and again at induction. Neither side of the newspaper is going to be safe for viewing.

It's not going to happen - he's going to cruise in - but it would be HILARIOUS if he missed this year by a few votes.

Shoot, I overlooked Larry Walker. Although I don't know who I would drop if I did a revote. I need 11 votes!

Gonna have to abstain. If I voted, I'd have to include Curt Schilling, and I don't want to vote for Curt Schilling. That gets me out of voting for Mussina and Pettitte too. Wish I could vote for Manny. Halladay too, but he probably won't need my help.

Halladay. Mariano. Schilling.

On edit: Should have voted Vizquel too. 11 Gold Gloves should get you in if you can hit even decently. My bad. Next year.

Omar hit the same as Ozzie... only he did it during a much, much, MUCH more robust offensive era. So... not quite the same.

Between the juicers and Yankees, this is a tough ballot. Maybe a good one for Edgar, who topped 70 percent last year and doesn’t face as much of a logjam as in years past.

Martinez
Schilling
Halladay
Walker
Helton
Messina
Rolen
Vizquel

I hate this group. No to Rivera just to be a "first-ballot" dick. He can sit by the pool for a year. Yes to Edgar Martinez (DH is a position--it's a stupid position but it counts), Mike Mussina and Jeff Kent.

Vizquel was a heckuva fielder, and I booed to see an All-Star Game with a shortstop-filled AL roster, which Torre responded to by moving Vizquel to second, and keeping Jeter at short, but I don't think Vizquel was Smith's equal, on offense or defense.

BAM!
(or should we say "ZAP!"?)

As for the Omar/ Ozzie comparison. Ozzie may not have been as good as Ozzie (nobody has ever been), but he was the best defensive shortstop in the American League while Ozzie performed his magic in the NL. And as long as baseball players have to wear a glove, IMO his superiority over his peers for an extended period of time is what the HOF is all about.

Re: 2019 Hall of Fame ballot

I guess the only potential knock on Halladay was his short-ish prime.
Called up at age 21 but didn't break through until age 26. Then, after a brief stumble, was great for a string but had his final good season at age 34 after only eight total seasons as a full-time starter (30+ starts)
plus just two other seasons of over 20

Helluva prime though.

Re: 2019 Hall of Fame ballot

Halladay was, for a stretch, one of the best, if not the best, starter in baseball.

I like B-R's "MVP Shares" and "Cy Young Shares" listings, because although those awards may be flawed, they do tell you something. And Halladay is 10th in all-time Cy Young Shares:

1. Roger Clemens (7 wins) 7.66
2. Randy Johnson* (5 wins) 6.50
3. Greg Maddux* (4 wins) 4.92
4. Clayton Kershaw (3 wins) 4.56
5. Steve Carlton* (4 wins) 4.29
6. Pedro Martinez* (3 wins) 4.26
7. Tom Seaver* (3 wins) 3.85
8. Max Scherzer (3 wins) 3.73
9. Jim Palmer* (3 wins) 3.57
10. Roy Halladay (2 wins) 3.50
11. Justin Verlander (1 win) 3.40
12. Tom Glavine* (2 wins) 3.15
13. Sandy Koufax* (3 wins) 3.05

I hate Clemens and didn't vote for him here because of that, but he should probably be in. Kershaw will be in some day, and Scherzer and Verlander are going to have really compelling cases too.

(This list does, admittedly, fall apart a bit with multiple winners Johan Santana, Corey Kluber, and Bret Saberhagen 14th, 15th, and 17th, respectively.)

I'm a rather stingy HOF voter. I went with Rivera, Walker, and Helton (I know his numbers are inflated from a career in Colorado's thin are, but they are still damn good numbers). I was on the fence on Halladay and to an even lesser degree Bergman. Probably should have given the nod to Halladay.

How do you like that patience paying off for Mussina? He's gone 20.3% (2014), 24.6% (2015), 43.0% (2016), 51.8% (2017), and 63.5% (2018).

He's also unjustly on the outside looking in when it comes to the Orioles' garden of retired numbers.

I think there is residual bitterness in Baltimore from him jumping to the Yankees, but he was a heckuva pitcher. He may be the last guy ever to win 20 games in his final season.

Re: 2019 Hall of Fame ballot

Should 100% happen, prepare for variations on these ledes:

Leave it to the best closer baseball has ever seen to slam the door on one of the silliest customs in Hall of Fame voting history.

He dominated ninth innings like no relief pitcher before him and now he has retired precedent in order.

Everybody knew he was the greatest. Now everybody has said so.

The eternal Yankee dynasty has added another crown to its reign, and it's one not even the fiercest Red Sox loyalist could argue against.

An industry that watched Mariano Rivera with awe responded the only way it could -- unanimously.

And next year:

Percentage of vote doesn't begin to describe the transcendence of Derek Jeter. He gave 100% on his worst day. Not that he had any of those.

Edgy MD
Dec 19 2018 02:44 PM
Re: 2019 Hall of Fame ballot

And these ledes will be stopped at editing:

Mariano Rivera has made a lot of history, none so momentous as his blown save against the Red Sox in 2004 starting the transformation of a robotic Yankee sweep into baseball's greatest comeback and the Red Sox ending of the longest championship drought in baseball history. Now he will forever be recorded as part of that history.

Panamanians were electrified by the news of Mariano Rivera's election to the Hall of Fame.

Re: 2019 Hall of Fame ballot

Were there hiccups? Unlikely imperfections? Stutter steps that ever so briefly sidetracked a gait that carried the closer sure and true through the gates of Cooperstown earning the cheers of immortals like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle? A few, perhaps, but since it was Rivera, it can be resolutely declared that the rare Yankee triumph that slipped through Mariano's otherwise sure fingers could not be classified a setback, for even when a note was dropped in Rivera's Ninth Symphony, losing was still unheard of. In memory, every pitch was a strike, every call was an out, every result made John Sterling the most accurate reporter working in any media. Thuuuuuh Yankees win! And the save inevitably goes to Mo.

No wonder it was unanimous. It couldn't have been anything but.

Boston sportswriter Bill Ballou wants to have his cake and eat it, too. He decides he doesn't value closers and wouldn't vote for Rivera. But he also doesn't want to be the one who costs him a shot at a unanimous ballot, so he's not going to vote at all.

[url]https://www.telegram.com/news/20181222/bill-ballou-mariano-rivera-not-getting-this-writers-hall-of-fame-vote

Last year he voted for five players: PED tainted Clemens, Bonds and Manny Ramirez plus Chipper and Vlad. But didn't think Jim Thome's untainted 600+ homers were worthy.

Re: 2019 Hall of Fame ballot

Bill Ballou could be a hero, just for one day, if he sends his Riveraless ballot in. He invents a loopy rationale to deprive a MFY of unanimous support and then doesn't follow through. Next time put a stamp on the envelope.
