5-Day Weekend

Let's say you get a 5-day weekend in early February.

You can't spend a billion but can do a "fun" trip.

-- You gotta take a Wifey a 12-year-old kid

-- You'd like to stay out of Florida if possible on general principals

-- Some travel OK, but multi-city connections and drives of 2 hours+ once touching down are to be avoided if possible

-- Preferably a place with better weather and scenery than NYC

Where do you go?

(I got a good tip on Santa Fe from a knowledgeable source)

Re: 5-Day Weekend

This is some coincidence because today I was thinking about planning a coupla days winter vacation, mainland USA. And I was thinking Vegas, because I wanna eat at Rao's though I suspect the Vegas one is not like the local one. And there's a Vegas Carnegie Deli, too. Maybe I'd catch one of those Cirque Soleil shows, maybe the Beatles themed one. I'd been to Vegas before more than 25 years ago with some friends who love to gamble. I'm not really into gambling so that would be a con for me. But warm weather and you dont need a passport.

I took quite a few trips to San Antonio for work at my old job and generally found it to be a fun place to eat, shop, and see touristy things. I think the weather in February is normally in the 68-72 range.

Tennessee. Barbecue. Memphis has Sun Records, Civil Rights Museum and Stax. Nashville has the Opry and Music Row. There's Civil War stuff and other things in between.

Memphis is a *fantastic* city to visit. Nashville's nice too. So is Chattanooga. That's more than five days, though.

United has non-stop round trips to Palm Springs, CA from Newark. We're doing a 5-day trip in January.

What do you all like to do together?

If you like history and ghosts, both my niece and another friend recommend Savannah. Can't say it'll be warm in February though

We're doing a 5 day trip this winter to Tucson, AZ and environs. Hikes, giant cacti, good food. Biggest downside is that there are no direct flights.

Las Vegas is great, especially fun with a 12 year old.

I'll second Santa Fe. I was there for a day last year when a buddy and I road tripped from Phoenix to Cleveland to deliver my mother's old car to my niece. And I got to hang with your source for a while, which is worth the trip right there.

Probably chilly in February. It's something like 7500 feet above sea level. But desert, so precipitation isn't an issue. Awesome cathedrals, history, good restaurants. A little touristy.

And there's a place about two hours northeast with your name written all over it. Check a map.

May be a pain to get there. You probably have to fly into Albuquerque. I don't know if there are direct flights from NYC, and Santa Fe is a little more than an hour away once you land.

Or you can just road trip to Cleveland and visit the RnRHoF. The weather sucks, but the beers are on me.

Also, Kansas City doesn't get that cold, and the Negro Leagues museum is worth the trip. You won't get much scenery, though.

At this point, anyplace the sun shines would be a great idea :/

Thanks for the suggestions. Will look into San Antonio, Palm Springs, Santa Fe and Tucson, maybe PR too.

No interest in Vegas as I've been there 3 times this year for work and generally hate it. I wanna save KC for a baseball-road-trip sometime.

Been to Nashville a few times (PITA to fly to, iirc) but never Memphis
