xmas tunes 2k18

So I like christmas music for about 3 weeks a year.

New xmas records this year by the Mavericks, the Old 97s and JD McPherson have earned their way into the Lunchbucket Family rotation so it's been kind of a rootsy, old-timey holiday in our house.

I really dig unabashed retro rocker JD McPherson whose songs if not new are all pretty funny and pulled off genuinely and lovingly:

This came out last year, but I first heard it this week.

Re: xmas tunes 2k18

I've been playing on Facebook with the idea of songs that have little or nothing to do with Christmas, but I predict that, like "Baby, It's Cold Outside," they will one day sneak into the back door of the December radio canon:

[list:dcd9zkgn]“Holiday” — Madonna
“Personal Jesus” — Depeche Mode
“Lights” — Journey
“Holiday Road” — Lindsey Buckingham
“Jesus Is Just Alright” — The Doobie Brothers
“Shining Star” — Earth, Wind, & Fire[/list:u:dcd9zkgn]

How has "All You Zombies" not become a Hannukah holiday staple?

I love Christmas songs. I haven't discovered anything new this year, which is unusual. Eric Clapton's release has some nice moments.

Here's one I stumbled on a couple years ago and it quickly became one of my faves! It's got sort of an odd coda that seems unnecessary, but it's otherwise fantastic.

Enjoy!

Here's one I love, but my wife thinks is awful. It's by a band called Capital Lights, and I can't find too many other things that it has done.

Re: xmas tunes 2k18

I heard Mojo Nixon interviewing Old 97s singer Rhett Miller yesterday, and he banged out some sloppy versions of selections from the band's new Christmas album.

The songs are virtually all Christmas relationship songs (Miller says he only knows how to write one kind of song). They kind of feel like the enterprise was rushed. One song would have a great refrain but a sloppy bridge. Another would have good lyric but a sketchy melody. But I liked them enough that I'm intrigued what the album arrangements sound like.

I've written two Christmas relationship songs. They're fun! I mean, "Christmas Wrapping" never gets old, and that's saying something. Even "Last Christmas" has retained a freshness long past its sell-by date.

The JD McPherson holiday album is really good and has been on heavy rotation in my house this holiday.

I include Buckingham's "Holiday Road" on all my Xmas playlists. I put on Counting Crows "Long December" this year as well.

I recently listened to "All You Zombies" as part of a Philadelphia playlist I put together. It wasn't as cool as I thought it was.

It's more appropriate for Passover. But it's not a Passover staple, either. Radio stations need to come up with a spring holiday music list; I traditionally play "Crucify" by Tori Amos every Good Friday.

Radio completely sucks out here, so I'll usually listen to WXPN (Philadelphia's FUV equivalent) online when I'm not listening to NPR, and they played a single from the Old 97s album last night. "It's Awesome to be a Kid" or something like that. As rock/pop Christmas songs go, it's about as good as it gets.

I thought of that, but I'm in a December mindset.

Man, think of the $$ if Elvis had done a Ramadan album.

Re: xmas tunes 2k18

Edgar Allen Poe must have been listening to local radio when he wrote "The bells, the bells, the tintinabulation of the bells", and maybe that constant din is what drove him to write his macabre tales.
I've limited my car radio listening to non-music stations until December 26, when the songs won't have any bells in them.
Just in case.

You guys are right there is a tossed-off quality to the Old 97s record, it's kind of a goof. Miller also has a new solo album and probably doesn't want to be competing with himself that much. That record is pretty good.

They have a few covers that give the cowboy treatment to "Angels We Have Heard On High" and "Auld Lang Syne"

I only went thru the Clapton record once and didn't remember any of it.

I'll have to check out the Olds 97 lp. Have a long drive across the state tonight, so will see if it's on Spotify.

Meanwhile, here's a fun one. The Charlie Brown Christmas is special to me, and this Sidewalk Prophets song incorporates Linus' speech. Good stuff!
