**Holiday Break Work Check**

For those not cruising the 'Member Promotion' board, I changed employers a few weeks ago. So I was expecting to be working for much of the holiday break, as I've not yet accumulated any time off here. Happy to say that they pro-rated me for 2 floating holidays to get me through the last three weeks of 2018. I was hoping to just get one, so that I could take New Years' Eve off as a long weekend, but since I got two, I get to take Friday off as well and have a five day weekend. Had Xmas eve/day off as company holidays. So this week is a two day work week, today and tomorrow. Plus it's super quiet here -- this company gives a lot of time off to its employees and most of them are taking advantage and off the whole week.

I have very little to do until next Wednesday and KB has two five-day weekends in a row -- so I'd say we're ringing out 2018 rather leisurely.

For the first time in my career, I have this week off! But there are little things popping up that I need to take care of, and that's OK. Will have some quiet time to get a little writing done for some projects, and I'm about to take a hard hat tour of a renovation project that has some minor issues. I don't relax well.

I just rejoined the 9-5 world a few months ago, so I'm short on vacation time also. And I like working this time of year. Christmas and New Year's aren't major holidays for me, and I like having a few days where I'm not spending half the workday putting out fires.

The college is closed from the 24th until January 2. They implemented that policy about ten years ago to save heating costs.

I am also employed by a university that is closed from Christmas to New Year's Day with pay because the the union negotiated the break around 20 years ago and even after the contract expired the university decided to keep it because it didn't make much sense to have people doing busy work when no students are around. Saving heat probably makes sense too. It's nice now that I'm a parent because I can chill with the kids during their school break.

Had two 4-day weekends and took the three days in between off, so I'm on an 11-day break. Me and the missus have worked long enough at our jobs that we have tons of vacation time, and it's 'use it or lose it'. Sorry to those who don't.
