Reports are saying that Asdrubal Cabrera is going to the Rangers for one year and $3.5M. I'm rather shocked that he fared worse than Flores. If we didn't already have five more infielders than we need, I would have happily taken him back at that price.

Amazingly, Cabrera will only be playing in his age 33 season. He certainly seems older than that. In fact, I thought his best days were behind him when the Mets signed him the first time.

I'm ok with taking a pass. I feel like a real successful LOOGY is one that has a slider that breaks away from the lefty. Blevins with his high 80s fastball and ok curve doesn't have much margin for error.

Interesting point. Was it: Tampa had an immediate need so LAD took advantage, did other teams just wait out the 10-days that the Mets had to deal or dump Travis (the Mets didn't have much leverage), or was LAD simply more savvy than the novice Mets GM?

Re: There Used to Be a Met Guy Right Here 2019

Well, Travis had a salary attached to him when the Mets were dangling him, but yeah, if that deal was available for LA, it's not unreasonable to guess that something might have been available to the Mets if they offered to eat his salary.

It's speculative, because who knows how needs change from week to week, but it's not unreasonable.

Rays had both their catchers go down to injury this week, that's the condition that didn't exist when the Mets were pulling the trigger.

Speaking of former Mets I think we'll see Carlos Gomez in for Broxolli soon. Letter could be lost if we try to send him down so it wouldn;t surprise me if the Mets are hoping some other team gets an outfielder injury

Both Travis d'Arnaud (3rd of his season) and Kevin Palwecki (2nd) homered in games on Saturday, vs the Sawx & Yanx respectively.

Though neither is hitting .200, considering that Travis was at .067 barely two weeks ago, his current .189 (.240 w/Tampa) looks positively robust.

All 3 HRs have come in his last 7 ABs.

Plawecki [.171/.263/.343 in 70 ABs] has started 22 of Cleveland's 64 games this year and has also become a much better fill-in pitcher since leaving Queens.

His two mound appearances this season have both been 3-up/3-down situations, a lot better than his 4-run/5-hit/3-HR/3-inning stint as a Met back in 2017

So clearly he should strictly be used as a one-inning guy which means that maybe he'll start to be used in some higher-leverage situations soon.

Let's give it its full due: it was a 2-out, 9th inning, come-from-behind 3R HR off Aroldis Chapman which brought the Rays from 4-2 down to 5-4 up

Rays just closed out the bottom half -- K of Luke Voit w/a runner on -- to secure the win.

I don't know shit about baseball, and Robles' struggles here spoke for themselves, but I'd have risked all my Cranebucks on his being a vicious kind of closer given the opportunity. He just came off as having the demeanor one needed. This is also why I think the Mets could easily have just given the closer job to Gselly and taken their chances this year: Closers are made not acquired. With the right combo of stuff, demeanor + haircut, anyone can do it.

Re: There Used to Be a Met Guy Right Here 2019

2.62 ERA, 1.10 WHIP. That's pretty good. I feel like Hansel really needed to get comfortable with his off-speed stuff. He looked great that one extra inning game where he had to go 3-4 innings. Mixing in his slider and keeping them off balance. I thought that might be the tipping point for him, but it never stuck.

Maybe he's throwing that slider now. What a weird world this is where Robles is better than Noah and Jake.

The local minor league team is affiliated with the Tigers, and has "Tiger Fridays" where a former player is there to sign autographs and take photos. Usually there is a bobble head.

Frank Howard was the guest one day, and I brought my Mets history book that I ask players to sign. It kind of stood out because everyone else was asking him to sign Tigers stuff, or the bobblehead, which was difficult to sign. I asked Frank if he enjoyed his time with the Mets. "Best years of my life," he said.

He looked frail, but was still huge. Very nice guy! The bobblehead is pretty cool, too, with glasses.
