J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

Todd Bowles was fired, and I went into my happy dance.

I don't feel sorry for him, he still will earn the $8 million due on his contract.

I think Bart Scott summarized my feelings perfectly on the post game show. He noted that when the Jets hired Bowles, he came with the reputation of a top defensive mind with a good track record. We expected that he would build a shut-down defense and win games like Tennessee (I thought Baltimore), scoring just enough points to win. And Mac gave him the materials by spending a high proportion of draft and free agent capital on defensive players.

And Bowles never could do it.

Its as simple as that.

A textbook example of the Peter Principle, where someone is promoted to the level of his incompetence.

He had to go.

And it took too long.

I just hope Mac is better picking a head coach than he was filling out a balanced roster.

Bowles was 24-40 and lost 21 of his last 27. That's some suckitudo serioso.

happy to see Bowles gone, but Mac still built a SHIT roster and deserved to be out the door with him. Now the next head coach is going to be saddled with a GM he doesnt want (or Mac will hand-pick a new coach - but then what? you fire them both next year?)

unlike baseball (which i see as a "front-office sport" where any schmuck can manage) successful football starts with a coach and gives him a GM who will get him the personnel he needs for his schemes.

Mac absolutely deserved to go. Under Maccagnan (since 2015), the Jets rank 31st in drafted players still in the league. Only one of three second-rounders drafted during his tenure is still playing; NFL-wide, second-round draftees have stuck in the league at a 92-plus-percent rate over the last three years. That Bowles is apparently a bad (if decent and professional) head chef doesn't excuse the fact that he's been working with a largely-empty pantry.

this.

Not only have Macagnan's drafts been terrible, so has been his FA signings, for the most part. The latest debacle is named Trumaine "what, me worry?" Johnson.

Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

This should come as no surprise, but you show me a bad NFL team that morphed into a legitimate Super Bowl contender in a short amount of time, and without exception, I'll show you a team that absolutely killed it in the draft for a coupl'a years running. There's no other way to do it in the NFL. You can't simply buy or trade your way into contention in that league.

Vic Sage

Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

exactly, which is why Macagnan has been so much more damaging to the Jets than Bowles could ever be. Head coaches don't win; talent wins. Coaches can LOSE, however, so its still important to get somebody who gets his team ready every sunday. But mostly its important to have a GM that knows the difference between a 2nd-round talent and a guy who can't even make it in the NFL. Its one thing to miss on day 3, and first-rounders can blow up sometimes, but its the Day 2 2nd/3rd rounders that make a team, and the Jets would've done better by throwing a dart at their board than letting Macagnan make the final call.

2015 - 2nd = D. Smith* / 3rd = Mauldin*

2016 - 2nd = Hackenberg* / J.Jenkins**

2017 - 2nd = Maye** / A.Stewart*

2018 - 2nd = (none) / Shepard

* out of the league

** Jets starter

So out of his 7 2nd/3rd round picks, he's picked 4 guys who aren't in the league anymore, 2 decent starters, and a backup who had a bad rookie season.

Not nearly enough to turn around what is a dreadful team. There's also enormous pressure to draft wisely in the NFL, not only to improve the team, but to simply preserve the status quo. Football is such a brutally punishing game that a team is always losing some of its talent every year from injuries and the terrible physical toll the game subjects its players to.

Vic Sage wrote:

I'm gonna disagree here. As a 49ers fan and follower, I saw first hand how the Niners and their savvy GM Scot Mcgloghan amassed an enormous amount of top tier talent about 15 years ago. Frank Gore and Vernon Davis. And Alex Smith. And Patrick Willis and Navorro Bowman. And Joe Staley and Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis. But their coach Mike Singletary was a godammn neanderthal. The worst head coach I ever saw and that's saying someting because I'm a New Yorker and I have seen the Jets. Singletary was so bad that no one would coach for him. Smith played for seven different OC's in his first seven years. Singletary was so dumb that he was against the drafting of Patrick Willis, a Hall of Fame caliber talent and it was obvious from the moment Willis stepped on the field. Which was really weird because Singletary himself was not only a middle linebacker but considered an intelligent and cerebral kind of player. Anyway, without getting into the minutia of it all, including a most unimaginative smash-mouth offense the team still stunk with all that star talent until Singletary was finally fired and Jim Harbaugh was signed on. Harbaugh and his coaches transformed the Niners into Super Bowl contenders instantly. The talent was already there, for years.

Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

You're not disagreeing at all. You're just restating what I said. A good head coach can't make an insufficiently talented team win ("coaches don't win..."), but if a team has the talent, a good head coach will help a team flourish ("...talent wins."). A BAD head coach, however, can undermine a talented team ("coaches can LOSE").

When I read the reports of the signing, it was like this,

Blah blah blah blah HE BEAT BILL BELECHEK - TWICE blah blah blah.

That jumps out on his resume, and that's ok with me.

Also, Manning set records under Gase and Peyton even called Chris Johnson to plug him. Jay Cutler had by far his best season under Gase in Chicago, and even Tim Tebow had some success as a QB under Gase. Tim Tebow!

I'm warming to the choice.

what am I, EF Hutton?

my thoughts (for what they're worth):

- Gase was the kind of innovative offensive coordinator / QB whisperer that everybody always talks about wanting;

- He went 10-6 in Miami and made the playoffs, and Tannehill looked like a pro QB;

- Tannehill has been hurt (on and off) the past 2 seasons, and the team sucked, so they fired him; and

- Belichek was fired in Cleveland before going to the Pats.

I think that everything gets viewed through a SOJ perspective (and I'm as prone to that as anybody), so we look for reasons to say this was a bad move. And if we want to find reasons, we can. I'm just not ready to buy that yet. He has pro HC experience (so he doesn't have to learn how to be a HC on the job, unlike other candidates), but he's still a young guy, with a rep for innovative offenses that get the best out of QBs. Maybe, like Bill, he learned something about how to deal with players at his first stop, and now, with a talented healthy young QB, another top 3 pick and $100m to spend on FAs, he is primed to get it done.

Or, you know, SOJ.

Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

The Bell signing is nice, and signing a new guard was a start to improving the O-Line.

But consider this:

the Jets had one of the worst run-blocking units in the league last year, allowing their rushers to be stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage a league-high 26 percent of the time. Jets running backs also saw 39 percent of runs on third or fourth down, of two yards or less to go, fail to achieve a first down or touchdown; the league-average fail rate was 34 percent.

More help is needed.

Are you listening Mac?

I like your thinking, but I hope it is Allen. Bosa strikes me as the kind of player who gets his name called a lot by the announcers because they see his number on the top of the pile, rather than the guy under the pile who actually made the tackle. And they also know his name because of his brother's success.

I fear he'll be one step too slow in tackling and one second too slow in play recognition.

I hope if they get him, I won't have to say I told you so.

Bell is also one of the best blocking tailbacks in the league. He's fantastic at blitz pickup... which will help, given that our line has no real middle of which to speak. (It didn't have to be Paradis; oft-injured Morse would have worked, too.)

Regarding defensive shoring... if McCagnan doesn't trade down for multiple 2nd/3rd rounders, I wonder whether we'd not be better off going well-lopsided rather than well-rounded, focusing on upping either the rush or the defensive backfield significantly, rather than the piecemeal improvements for both that our current resources/draft picks would allow. Like, go for Houston AND an Allen/Bosa.

Vic Sage
Mar 19 2019 01:46 PM
Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

if you improve the pass rush, you don't really need to use resources to improve the secondary. But the reverse is not true, because if you allow an NFL QB enough time, he'll find a receiver against any secondary, given the way the rules work now. So i'd be all in on signing Houston, then drafting either Bosa or Wiliams. Then, draft a C and a CB in the 3rd round, and take a flyer on another Edge prospect somewhere after that.

With the top FAs gone, we still have to find 3 decent starter-level players at (in order of priority) 1) OLB, 2) Center, and 3) CB, either in draft or by trade. Maybe they can get a CB or a Center for Lee (whose been displaced by Mosley), but they won't be able to get an edge rusher for just Lee. So that's why LOLB/Edge has to be their primary target for their 1st round pick. They're not going to get a starter in the 3rd round at that position, whereas they might be able to with the CB and center positions (or at least cover those positions through trade and remaining FAs).

Jets Draft order (in order of need):

1 = OLB/Edge

3 = Center

3 = CB

4 = WT

6 = OT

7 = DT/E

The only reason to do this is to fill multiple holes AND your #1 guy isn't on the board at 3, so they need to wait until they're on the clock to move down, unless they get an overwhelming offer

Provided his doofy combine interviews don't betray a real disinterest in self-study/hard work, the second-rounder Polite looks like a first-round talent/real get in the third-round. (I'd feel even better if the Pats hadn't picked the other best-available edge rush guy in Winovich a few picks later.)

If Darnold is constantly dinged up because his O line can't protect him, or if Bell can't run because the O-line can't open any holes for him, then you will realize how frustrating Mac is as a GM. To paraphrase Dick Young (describing a bad fielder) Mac treats offensive linemen like they explode on contact.

Mac bought us a Porsche, but it will never get out of first gear as long as he continues ignore the thin interior of the offensive line. The one draft pick of a tackle isn't enough.

Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

the Jets didn't have a second rounder, there wasn't an offensive lineman worth the 3rd overall pick (highest drafted was 11th), and the guy they DID take in the 3rd round was graded as ONE OF THE BEST PASS-BLOCKERS IN COLLEGE last year... who needs some work run-blocking. good kind of guy to pick for a team looking to protect a QB.

i'd agree the Jets failed in free agency on the line, but not on draft day

Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

Grading the Jets draft:

R1 /#3 - DT Quinnen Williams, Alabama = A

QWill was the best available player and has the potential to be a pro bowl DT, but they needed an OLB more, and they needed a CB and a Center just as much, so a trade down would have been good to fill the holes. But a trade-down takes a willing partner, and if there wasn't one, then there wasn't. If they had to stay at #3, then QWill was as good as we could have hoped for. Perhaps his inside pressure will allow L.Will to become a dominant force, the way we always hoped he'd be.

R3 /#4 (68 overall) - LB Jachai Polite, Florida= A or F (for a C average)

A 1st round talent with so many red flags that he wasn't even on the board for a lot of teams. If he's the impact Edge pass-rusher that we need, then this is a great pick. But if he's the moron malcontent he appeared to be at the Combine and his Pro Day, then he'll be of limited use, and then out of the league entirely. It feels like this is a boom-or-bust pick by a GM who is desperate for a homerun, rather than one who is methodically building a winning team. We'll see, i guess. But lets also remember that the Patriots took Chase Winovich (Michigan) a few picks later, so this is a straight-up challenge pick. Frankly, i'd rather have Winovich. His ceiling is lower, but his floor is higher.

R3/#28 (92) - T Chuma Edoga, USC = B or D (for a C average)

They traded up one spot (giving up a R#7 pick) to take an OT with potential but with a number of red flags of his own. Like Polite, Edoga is a boom-or-bust prospect, and not at a position of immediate need, so, again, this pick smacks of desperation. Sure, if Edoga develops he'll be useful in 2 years (when both our OTs become FAs) but until then he's a backup at best. Depth is good, but with their 3rd pick? How about somebody who could beat out Roberts as our CB2, like Jamel Dean or Julian Love? Or If they had earlier taken a safer prospect than Polite (like OG/C Michael Dieter), then they could have then taken the edge rusher here that the Giants took, Ximines. Overall, I would much prefer a 3rd round with Winovich/edge + Dean/CB, or with Dieter/OL + Ximines/edge, rather than Polite/edge + Edoga/OT. This could work out great or be a total washout and, based on Maccagnan's draft history, i'd bet on the latter.

R4/#3(105): With a high pick in the 4th round and many decent DB prospects still on the board, they traded down to #13 (115) to pick up a late 5th round pick;

R4/#14(116):They trade down again, to improve their 5th round pick;

R4/#19 (121)- TE Trevon Wesco, West Virginia = C-

A blocking TE? Really? They are a dime a dozen in the NFL, and we have an excellent young TE already. Still available here were CBs Love, Sheffield, I.Johnson, I.Marshall, and Oruwarye, and OG/C prospect Michael Jordan, who would all later go before their next pick and all of whom will have been more useful (if they developed).

R5/#19 (157) - LB Blake Cashman, Minnesota - C or D (C- average)

So all the trading down in the 4th round netted us this former walk on, a special teams guy and ILB whose had multiple surgeries. WTF? Another depth pick, when the last decent OG/C prospect, Lamont Gaillard, was still on the board.

R6/#23 (196) - CB Blessuan Austin, Rutgers - B or F (C- average)

They finally take a CB and he's got some potential but huge medical red flags. Knee injuries limited him to one game last season and five in the last two years. For all anybody knows, he may never actually play again.

R7?#3 (217): traded away to move up 1 spot in the 3rd round to take Edoga; Minny took CB Kris Boyd. Because, apparently, we don't need any CBs.

OVERALL: C

After Williams, it was all "boom or bust" high risk picks, particularly with having so few picks to start with. Plus, we didn't address either the CB2 or C1 holes in our roster. This is what happens when you let a GM on the hot seat decide the fate of the franchise.

Your comment doesnt make sense to me on Edoga. How can a pick that doesnt full an immediate need be "desperation"? A desperation pick would be taking a guy earlier in the draft than his talent suggests because you have a huge need (see: NY Giants QB)

It was "desperation" in the sense that he's boom-or-bust. You swing for the fences when your losing. You make good solid contact when you're winning. He thought he needed to take a bunch of risks so ONE of them will hit and he can keep his job.

i didn't think Copeland would be the difference between a good or mediocre defense. I think Moseley and Adams are great, Jenkins and L.Will are good, and Anderson and Maye are serviceable. The 3 big factors that will determine whether or not the D is good this year are:

1) Trumaine Johnson - Is he healthy enough to return to the form he had as a good CB, under his former coach, Greg Williams?

2) Polite - can this Edge rusher give us anything?

3) Q.Williams - can this highly touted rookie have an impact, not just on collapsing the pocket, but on setting L.Will free?

If the answer to all 3 is "Yes", then we have a chance to be a GREAT defense.

2 out of 3? good.

1 out of 3? mediocre

0 out of 3? oy.

They put Qvale on the IR and re-signed McClellan, and re-signed Dortch to practice squad.

So here's the current roster/depth chart:

53 MAN ROSTER

* Quarterbacks (2): Sam Darnold, Trevor Siemian - They signed Falk to practice squad and cut Webb. It's Darnold's team now; we go as far as he takes us.

*Running Backs (4): Le'Veon Bell, Ty Montgomery, Bilal Powell, Trenton Cannon - They cut McGuire; Bell and Montgomery could be the best RB/WR combo backfield in NFL this season.

*Tight Ends (3): Ryan Griffin, Trevon Wesco, Daniel Brown - starter Herndon is suspended for first 4 games and they cut Tomlinson; not a promising group behind Herndon.

*Offensive Line (9): Kelvin Beachum, Kelechi Osemele, Ryan Kalil, Brian Winters, Brandon Shell; Edoga, Alex Lewis, Jonotthan Harrison, Tom Compton - Qvale put on IR; line hasn't played together much which is a problem.

*Wide Receivers (5): Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa, Jamison Crowder, Josh Bellamy, Braxton Berrios - they signed Berrios and cut Dortch, but re-signed him for practice squad; they still may add a WR since Bellamy and Berrios are primarily ST players, leaving them without a legit 4th WR, although Montgomery can also be used as a wideout. Still, I would have preferred they kept Burnett. He had good rapport with his college buddie, Darnold.

*Defensive Line (9): Henry Anderson, Quinnen Williams, Leonard Williams; Bronson Kaufusi, Steve McLendon, Folorunso Fatukasi; Kyle Phillips, Nathan Shepherd, John Franklin-Myers- they signed Franklin-Meyers and didn't cut anybody! they shouldn't be carrying more than 6 or 7 DLs (many teams get by with 5), so if they sign a CB and a WR (which they should), they need to cut at least 2 DLs (probably from among Philips, Sheperd, F-Myers). Even if they play a lot of 4-3, they still don't need more than 8. But either way, the DL should be the strength of the defense.

*Linebackers (8): Jordan Jenkins, C.J. Mosley, Neville Hewitt, Frankie Luvu; Basham, McLellan, Blake Cashman, Harvey Langi - they cut 3rd round pick Polite, lost Williamson for the season, Copeland is suspended first 4 games, and McLellan (cut but resigned when Qvale went on IR) is primarily a ST player, so this is a thin group and still lacks an edge rusher that can make an impact, even if Franklin-Meyers gets snaps there too.

*Cornerbacks (5): Trumaine Johnson, Darryl Roberts, Brian Poole; Arthur Maulet, Nate Hairston - They added Hairston via trade, traded away Nickerson, put Blessuan Austin on IR, and cut just about all other prospects from camp. Waiver pickup FS Bennett Jackson can play CB, but they need at least 1 more real CB. This is going to be a major problem area this season.

*Safeties (5): Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye; Rontez Miles, Matthias Farley, Bennett Jackson - they cut Middleton, adding Farley and Jackson. Adams/Maye is best starting safety combo in NFL, if Maye stays healthy.

*Special teams (3): Kaare Vedvik, Thomas Hennessy, Lachlan Edwards - they cut Bertolet and signed Vedik, which should be a major upgrade. Cannon and Berrios will handle K/P return chores.

Reserved Lists

*Suspended (2): Chris Herndon, Brandon Copeland

*Injured Reserved (6): Jalin Moore, Avery Williamson, Bucky Hodges, Brandon Bryant, Charles Tapper, Qvale

*Active Non Football Injury (1): Blessuan Austin

PRACTICE SQUAD (11):

*Josh Adams (RB)

*Calvin Anderson (OT)

*Ben Braden (OT/G)

*Kyron Brown (CB)

*Ian Bunting (TE)

*Greg Dortch (WR)

*Luke Falk (QB)

*Valentine Holmes (RB/WR)[International Pathways - 11th slot]

*Josh Malone (WR)

*Jamey Mosley (LB)

*Jeff Smith (WR)

I would've preferred they kept Burnett (WR) and Kyron Brown (CB), cutting DLs Phillips and Sheperd and adding them to practice squad. But otherwise, no big issues. The cut of Polite, and his failure to be added to anybody else's 53-man roster just shows how awful Macagnan was.

With that many defensive linemen, I'm guessing they will be playing mostly in a 4-3 defense for the first time in years.

It seems to fit their personnel and with the lack (still) of a dominant outside pass rusher, they'll have to put pressure on the QB from the inside.

1st R= (5 picks) 4 starters (L.Will, Adams, Darnold, Q.Will) , 1 non-Jets reserve (Lee/Cleve)

2nd R= (3 picks) 1 starter (Maye), 1 non-Jets reserve (D.smith/Dallas), 1 cut (Hackenberg)

3rd R= (6 picks) 1 starter (Jenkins), 2 reserves (Shepherd, Edoga), 1 non-Jets practice squad (Polite/Sea), 2 cuts (Mauldin, Stewart)

4th R= (5 picks) 1 starter (Herndon), 1 Reserve (Wesco), 3 cuts (Petty, Burris, Hansen)

5th R= (5 picks) 1 starter (Shell), 1 reserve (Cashman), 1 non-Jets practice squad (Leggett), 2 cuts (Harrison, Donahue)

6th R= (7 picks) 3 reserves (Fatukasi, Cannon, Austin), 1 non-Jets reserve (Nickerson), 1 non-Jets practice squad (McGuire), 2 cuts (Clark, Jones)

7th R= (3 picks) 1 starter (Edwards), 2 cuts (Simon, Peake)

So, Macagnan drafted 34 players in all. Of those, the Jets still retain 16 players (less than 1/2), including 9 starters that include 2 pro-bowlers (L.Williams, Adams), 2 potential pro-bowlers (Q.Will, Darnold), 3 solid starters (Jenkins, Maye, Edwards) and 2 marginal starters (Shell, Herndon). Of the 18 players he drafted that are no longer with the Jets, only 3 are on the active roster of any other team, with 3 more on practice squads, leaving 12 out of 34 players he drafted over the last 5 years currently unemployed.

further analysis shows that he hit on 4 out of 5 1st rounders (duh!), but got only 2 starters and 2 reserves out of the 9 picks on "Day 2" (the 2nd & 3rd rounds), with 4 of the 5 remaining picks not currently on any active roster (1 is). His 20 picks on "day 3" (4th-7th rounds) are equally abysmal, with 3 starters and 6 reserves (5 with Jets) currently on any roster. Out of 29 non-1st round picks, he picked only 5 starters and 9 reserves (7 still with Jets). That's a 41% success rate, while hitting on only 17% for starters after the 1st round.

Is this normal for a GM? above or below average? It sounds bad to me. Really bad. Historically bad. And this doesn't even account for the loss of draft value from his trades that resulted in 1 extra 3rd and 2 fewer 2nds (slightly offset by 2 extra 6ths and 2 fewer 7ths).

i don't know what game you were watching, but the Jets D was pitching a shutout and was dominating Buffalo right up to the second that Moseley went out with an injury. Once he was off the field, the Bills did what they wanted. If it weren't for the incompetent Jets OFFENSE, which was given field position and 8 points by the D, the Jets would have been up 28-0 in the 1st half.

This game was about the continuing perpetual ineptitude the Jets O line and Moseley's injury.

I would much rather have Teddy Bridgewater (Saints) right now. I'd have taken him over Kaepernick if you gave me the choice in the offseason, but given that Brees is out ~6 weeks and Bridgewater knows their system its a no-brainer.

Same thing with the Jets really - Darnold could be back as soon as week 5 or 6 - there is no sense in signing a street free agent who realistically wouldn't learn the playbook etc until after the Week 4 bye.

The Steelers have a much stronger argument as its a full season without Big Ben, but they drafted Rudolph to be their future with a high pick and they are going to want to see what he does particularly being cost controlled on a rookie deal.

I'm not sure what the Jaguars backup situation is but i see the team fit better as there isnt that clear guy and even the start sucks (in my opinion he is the biggest 'right place right time' backup QB ever)

It's those newfangled NFL TV rules again as the Jets and Giants games are both on at 1:00PM on opposite networks at (naturally) the same time. It'd be even nicer if we had two 4 o'clock games also, but that's asking for too much. Why? I don't know. But I can predict, with deadly accuracy, what the NFL's response would be.

Frayed Knot
Oct 06 2019 12:19 PM
Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

I'm pretty sure that those "old" guidelines you remember concerning conflicts and networks and the like started to go out the window right around the time that 'Flex' scheduling became a thing.

The NFL's claim to fame, and of course the source of most of their income, is that they get not just good TV ratings but Monster TV ratings. The downside to that is that you become a slave to

those ratings and begin to need/crave them like a drug. So if moving games between networks or scheduling against a home game -- provisions originally put in to protect home team attendance

back when 'The Shield' actually cared about quaint things like home fans -- can potentially increase the rating by a point or two then they're going to take that option rather than answering questions

about declining ratings such as they had to do two seasons ago.

Not scheduling two 4 o'clock games remains so as to create something close to a 'national' game for each of the networks on alternating weeks.

with Darnold already on the roster and some big name QBs in the draaft the #1 pick could be a trade bounty for the Jets. But Miami seems so locked in on it that they'd probably cut players midgame if they led at halftime.

Darnold makes a below average offensive line look ... possibly adequate. The defensive line makes running the ball seem like a waste of time and Jamal Adams is a beast. Ok, the corners still arent great. But Bless Austin and Arthur Mallet look like they at least belong on a roster, unlike Trumaine "the most overpaid player since Jason Bay" Johnson.

The Jets are 6-6 in games started by Sam Darnold.

Buffalo is locked in the 5 seed and has very little incentive to play Josh Allen past the 1st quarter against Greg "cut off the head" Williams' defense next week. Jets win?

What if Mosley and Williamson don't miss the year? What if Darnold doesn't get a disease most commonly associated with college kids sleeping around? What if Macagnan gets fired BEFORE he has the opportunity to spend all the money on the wrong positions and a 3rd round pick on a guy who couldn't make it through training camp?

Jets trade down in the second round and pick Denzel Mims, wide receiver from Baylor and get another pick in the third round (they now have 3)

Mims is 6 3, has 4.3 speed and goes up after the ball.

Pro Football Focus didn't love Becton but they this to say about 5th rounder Bryce Hall

One of the best picks made on Day 3 came from the New York Jets when they got Bryce Hall 158th overall. If Hall had declared last year, there is a strong chance he would have gone in the first round. However, he unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury in Week 7 while in punt coverage that lowered his draft stock significantly. Injury aside, Hall has some of the best ball skills we have ever seen here at PFF. At 6-foot-1 with over 32-inch arms, Hall posted the best forced incompletion percentage in all of college football (28.2%) in 2017 and 2018. In that span, his coverage grade was the fifth best in the country. He has the potential to make an impact from day one.

I like the draft philosophy in the lower rounds of taking a guy who had the talent for 1st/2nd round if healthy. beats taking the stiffs who are backups at best even healthy. So what if they get hurt? most 5th rounders dont stay long anyway.

LWFS
Apr 26 2020 03:45 PM
Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

The quarterback pick rankles-- he seems like he would have been there a LOT later, and guys like Amik Robertson (underrated Louisiana Tech CB... and-- underrated-- team captain) were out there at Jet need areas-- but overall, I really can't argue with what Douglas was doing overall. The line depth in particular looks SIGNIFICANTLY improved; besides Man Mountain Mekhi, that Charlotte kid seems like he could be a potential contributor this year, too.

The UDFA talent he secured-- mostly on the defensive side-- seems intriguing. A lot of defensive backs. Edge rusher/speedy LB Bryce Huff. The Georgia WR Cager also looks interesting.

To lose 16 games in a year:

-It takes a very un-focused coach to do this week in and week out. Rich Kotite tried but he just could not pull it off.

-It takes a real Barney fife type of coach to botch an entire year. You need to work around the clock to develop a game plan that is just right.

-You a General manager who is distracted with king size roast beef sandwiches while he could be on the phone getting that one player who could lead his team to a win.

-You need an owner who is so clueless that he does not fire the coach halfway during the season.

-You need the players who don't want to go that extra mile and share their dissatisfaction with the press.

I bet most fans don't realize how difficult this is to accomplish.

But if you're a fan of the Jets, you know that goal is well within reach.

Yeah, the reasons NOT to fire Gase:

1. its been cited that the Johnsons want to avoid the appearance of having a quick trigger finger - remember, as bad as things are Gase hasn't finished his second full season. They are afraid the next big hire won't want the job if they think they only get ~20 games to turn things around

2. What is Sam Darnold as a football player? I don't know, you don't know, and the Jets don't know. Does giving him a new coach for 8 games help answer that question or does it just muddy the waters even further to have him try to play in a new system for 8 games? Of course of the Jets get the #1 pick and Lawrence comes out of college the question is likely moot. But what if the Jets pick 2nd or 3rd? What if Lawrence stays in school? the Jets need to know if they need a QB and firing the coach might not be the best way to learn that.

3. They want the #1 pick and Gase gives them the best shot at that.

Maybe Darnold would be a good quarterback with a good coach or good surrounding cast. But even if that were the case, he is done here. The economics of the NFL make it so that quarterbacks - even mediocre ones - command a large portion of the salary cap once they are off their rookie contract. Darnold has one more year until that happens. So even if you believed he would turn into an average guy and that the rookie would be the same, you are better off with 4 years of rookie-contract Lawrence.

Many players have fulfilled their potential after leaving coach Adam Gase. One was quarterback Ryan Tannehill who went from terrible in Miami to a Playoff-caliber QB in Tennessee. It would not surprise me if Darnold did the same. Sam is mentally shot here but still has the tools. His best plays have come when the plays Gase called have broken down and he has to improvise.

Whichever player the Jets select in the next draft, Gase must be gone.

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/report-jets-fire-defensive-coordinator-gregg-williams-after-legendarily-awful-loss-to-raiders-161424493.html

The announcers and local sportscasters were vocal about why the Jets were blitzing on the last play and not playing more defensive backs deep. It was a bad defense on the prior incomplete pass (he should have seen the receiver get behind the defense) so playing the same defense on the last play was inexcusable and unforgiveable.

My point was that rooting for draft picks is loser strategy but too many fans have bee conditioned into thinking it's the way to solve all their problems even as the track record for doing so is poor.

Trevor Lawrence is the belle of the ball for the moment (and may well be great in time) but Darnold was once that guy and so was Sanchez, as were a whole slew of other college guys who are

hyped and marketed each year as if success at a lower levels automatically conveys to the pros.

Also, maybe an average QB plus all the booty one could get for trading the #1 pick -- or the #2 should they disappoint their fans by actually winning a game or two this year -- might work out

better than banking everything on the latest savior du jour.

Except that the concept of 'Tanking for Trevor' is being done with no more zeal than was 'Sucking for Sam' a few years back and we see how well that's turned out.

And while there are those claiming Lawrence is destined to be the greatest #1 pick in the history of mankind (that may well be, I have no opinion on the matter)

similar things are said of just about every #1 overall every season and it's only after they flop, or at least don't succeed to the degree expected, that those supposedly

So in an attempt to at least partially answer my own question, it looks like 15 of the last 20 #1 overall picks have been spent on QBs; some good, some not-so-good,

some too soon to tell. Not sure how many of the good would be considered "franchise changing" types.

Starting in 2001: Michael Vick, David Carr, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Alex Smith,

JaMarcus Russell, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck,

Jameis Winston, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Joe Burrow

I suppose the more interesting thing to look at is how the #2 or 3 picks in each of those years looks in retrospect. One thing I do know is that, just 3-1/2 years ago, nine

teams (including the Jets) passed on Patrick Mahomes II who, at age 25 with just 45 games in the league, is already considered a lock to have a bust in Canton, Ohio.

oe: that group of 15 above went to a combined four Super Bowls with two SB wins: Manning x 2 (and both wins), Cam Newton and Jared Goff (the guy who lost to Darnold

yesterday as a 17 point favorite) went to one SB each but neither won. Newton, I believe, had the only regular season MVP out of that group.

He's not undeniably, context-p'shawing great. But he's also been running for his life in the previous two seasons... and throwing to a replacement-level skeleton crew behind a still-gelling line for this one. His decision-making and accuracy both appear to have regressed a bit this year.

The issue is, he's approaching the end of his rookie deal, which is pretty much fish or cut bait time. It's tough to commit to a multiyear, market-rate deal-- especially one that might undercut your ability to give your QB ingredients with which to "cook"-- for a guy who still seems so... unformed. He's just 24, yet.

Speaking of those Saints, the loss of the #1 pick to draft a quarterback really hurts. I was originally in the camp of "Let's put a good offensive line in front of Darnold and see what he can do". I compared his situation to Archie Manning when he came to the NFL with the Saints and was running for his life and getting beat up every game.

But the more I see Darnold, I see him making the same mistakes as he did as a rookie; running out of bounds for a loss instead of throwing the ball away, throwing into (sometimes double) coverage, telegraphing his throws by not looking off a receiver, etc. Those are things he should have learned and understood by now. I believe if they put great pieces around him, he will never be more than a QB who just manages the offense, and I'm now not even sure he can do that.

A Muslim coach in the brown NFL is long overdue.

Worth noting in all this Deshaun Watson trade-hype: apart from being consistently amazing (despite generally underwhelming supporting talent-- especially coach-wise-- in Houston) he's still just 25 years old, and won't turn 26 until next season begins.

I'm in camp keep Darnold, forget about trading for or drafting a QB and trade

the high draft pick for a boat load of picks to the highest bidder.

Darnold may be good, still. Deshaun Watson IS great. Like, Rodgers-and-Wilson-level, just-sub-Mahomes-level great. Top 2-3 in every passing category that matters great... top 3-5 in the league right now-- and that's ranking REALLY conservatively-- great. And he's just two years older than Darnold. Who is, y'know, not so great.

Jets trading Darnold to the Panthers for a variety of draft picks.

6th round pick this year is pretty lame. 2nd and 4th next year.

Can't comment further until Mel Kiper tweets.

Mel Kiper knows as much about pro football as Peter Gammons does about the National League.

He liked Darnold and had him ranked the best quarterback in his draft class.

The expected draft pick - Zach Wilson seems to have the skill set to perform well in the new coach's offensive scheme, but only time will tell.

The Mets will have to do something spectacular to make it to the back page headline tomorrow.

Considering that this is the last year of Darnold's rookie contract in a salary-cap league, and they STILL don't know quite what to make of him, it's about as good a deal as you could expect. (Consider: Carson Wentz, with a significantly more distinguished track record, fetched a package that was comparable-- 3rd-round, conditional 2022 2nd-- from the Colts.)

They've now got 21 (!) picks in the next two drafts, including four first-rounders and three second-rounders. Even if just by accident, as long as this Wiison kid is 70 percent of what the experts think he'll be, they're likely to be halfway-decent at the end of this.

Darnold never had a quality RB, or multiple good WRs, or any kind of coherent coaching staff in his entire NYJ career. So who the hell knows if he's any good?

But, after three years, he still:

takes a loss rather than throwing the ball away

throws into double coverage

misreads defenses

Those are things that don't depend on a supporting cast, and should have gotten better by now.

They haven't.

It is time to move on.

Re: J-E-T-S , Jets Jets Jets

And even if you give him the benefit of the doubt and say it's ALL on Gase or McCagnan or Brodie... the fact of the matter is that because he's due a raise after this year, they kinda need to make the decision about whether he's any good NOW, when they have a plethora of other good options available. And if we don't know what he is/will be definitively-- what his actual defining strengths and weaknesses are, versus those that are just transitory-- then how do you surround him with the "right" talent (best suited to his strengths), anyway?

I think he'll be good. I think he'll probably be better with the Panthers than he ever was with us, or at least more consistent. But at this point, the timing just doesn't work out.

So this year, they're going to draft their QB of the future.

After they drafted their QB of the future three years ago in Sam Darnold

After they drafted their QB of the future in Gino Smith

After they drafted their QB of the future in 2009 in Mark Sanchez

It looks like the Jets' QB of the future has no future.

The difference is, the guys making these moves (GM and coach) have a track record of success doing it their way, not the incompetent buffoons who manned those posts in recent regimes. I feel very confident they are on the right track toward building a winning team.

Time will tell.

It's just that when I hear football being discussed it seems to me that the league is usually talked about as having more MENSA members than the group photos from the Nobel ceremonies. And, yet, bad picks are made, can't misses actually do, and last year's genius is next year's bum all the time.

Smith was only a Second Round pick which is usually a spot your are ok to fail on a quarterback without killing your franchise. Of course if you waste a 2nd round pick on a QB who never even takes a pro snap and is out of the league already, that is not good (you missed Christian Hackenscrub)
