Mets have a beat writer again at the Daily News. Her name is Deesha Thosar.

So she was writing for SNY before?

I'm sure she's making a small fraction of the salary of the person she replaced.

Re: Who Needs a Sports Editor?

This hire implies Kristie Ackert is full-time on the MFYs now, which would indicate two beat reporters devoted to New York baseball, which used to be assumed but with the stripped-down Snooze, that's actually a doubling of the second half of 2018 depth chart, when it was just Ackert covering both teams.

Ackert was a panel guest at Saturday's SABR-NYC meeting and said she was

going to solely be covering the Skanks this year

Sorry I missed the sabr event this year.

I know it was Met-ly in nature, but is it wrong to point out it wasn't a particularly robust lineup?

Last year in addition to scrubs like me you had an MLB umpire and Tyler Kepner. This year its Art Shamsky for the millionth time

Agreed it was a tad light, I only stayed until lunch. The HOF guy scheduled for

the afternoon was a repeat from previous year too.

Re: Who Needs a Sports Editor?

James Wagner, who found interesting stores, often with a Latin flavor, for the Times, has moved over to the MFY beat. Presumably the Paper of Record will occasionally cover the Mets with wire copy and a charming anecdote in some non-sports section.

When she turned around were you able to pretend it was just a coincidence?

Re: Who Needs a Sports Editor?

I don't know if this is Deesha's first story covering the Mets, but it's the first I've seen.

She opens with this colorful paragraph:

Not so far down the list of great American pastimes, beyond baseball and barbecues and lottery scratch-offs, is an old-fashioned summer fireworks show. Fireworks are a funny thing — most of the fun is in the anticipation, the expectation. You light the fuse, run for cover and delight in the pop. Then it's over and you've lost 95 games, good for fourth in the East.

On the Wilpons:

Fred and Jeff Wilpon are known, grudgingly to Mets fans, to approve every personnel move on a case-by-case basis. Their checkbook is closed and their small-market oversight is a stick in the mud.

On the Mets' approach to statistical analysis in recent years:

The Mets are the dinosaur squinting into the spreadsheet.

Re: Who Needs a Sports Editor?

She's already held the Wilpons to talk more than her predecessor ever did. It will be interesting with the SNY/DN affiliation whether they will reign her in or let her run with that.

Matt Ehalt from the Record and Wally Matthews most recently with the News headed to new dedicated Yahoo venture called Queens Baseball Club, which hypes itself as members-only and insidery.

Seems sketchy to me. The Mets already have a Fake News organization/online community in SNY/MetsBlog.

Verzion is a big Mets sponsor amiright? Yet the marketing comes off very much like they are walking the line on appearing "sanctioned" -- they throw around the word Citifield, but not Mets. And that postseason event with the "coach" sure seems authentic.
