Let's have a quick little chat about Brian Dozier

He would have been a perfectly logical choice for affordable 2B coverage pre-Robinson Cano. Now? Can't really figure out why we'd be linked with him. He hasn't played any other position except shortstop, way back in 2012. Did the NL get a DH and I missed it?

Regarding the link between the Mets and Dozier, it's worth pointing out that Mike Puma of the New York Post reported just yesterday that the Mets don't have much more money to spend this offseason, although they've spent very little since GM Brodie Van Wagenen publicly stated that they “still have some real money to spend.”

They seem to really be targeting infielders. My hunch is that they think they'll be able to dump Todd Frazier (and hopefully his salary) somehow.

Either that, or they're going to trade Jeff McNeil. I prefer the first option.

I really wonder what the market for McNeil is? I love him, but if the Mets have doubts about a soon-to-be 27-year old who kinda came out of nowhere, then I would think other teams would have a tepid, reserved interest at the most. I hope they don't attach him as a make-weight to a ditch a contract they don't like (lookin' at you, Lagares).

He KINDA came out of nowhere, but he was getting some prospect ink two or three years back, and then was sidelined by injuries in 2016 and 2017. The nature of these lists are that countless new faces are pushing to make them, and once one guy has a setback, he falls off and stays off forever. It's not particularly fair, or particularly representative of what they are trying to depict.

If the Mets don't like him they don't, or perhaps they like someone else more, but my eyeballs sure suggested he wasn't just on a lucky run, but was putting real skillz to work, and doing it at three different levels.

Mets secondbasemen who got scrod when the team recruited somebody else over them:
•
Wally Backman who waited years in AAA for a second chance, and

  •
Jeff Kent, who was dealt off in favor of a lesser player with a bigger name.
  •
My guess is that they talked to Dozier before the JD Davis trade. They still have Cecchini, Rivera, and Herrera at AAA, so I'd rather bank on one of them to step up to a reserve role than go out and spend (especially if resources are limited). And I really don't see any room for Dozier to start anywhere with us.

Good talk, guys. Dozier signed with the Nats.

Well that chat was quick and little. Nothing wrong with doing due diligence on everybody, but this didn't seem like a good match.
