Another deal without the slightest hint of a rumor preceding it. Well there's the backup shortstop anyway. Frazier dump coming? Hopefully not McNeil, whom this dude would seemingly replace.

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

From Eno Sarris in The Athletic, August 23, 2018

When you see something team-wide like this, you immediately think of leadership. And leaders, especially in this case, usually come from veteran position players. Talk to people around the team and two names keep coming up: Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis.

...

“I love talking hitting, and any time it comes up, we just talk; but I also recognize that I'm not the hitting coach,” Lowrie said. “I'm an open book, and if you come to me with anything you have, I can share my experience and my opinions and what I see, but I'm not going to you as a player and try to change what you're doing.”

Lowrie is always there to break hitting down with his teammates. Bush has the tools to help them prepare. Davis may not talk a ton, but when he does, the words are meaningful to his teammates and sum up their approach well. All three are leaders in their own way, even if none of the three is necessarily outspoken.

Glad we traded for JD Davis, guys. Seems more shit's gotta be on the horizon unless "Frazier/Cano at first until we're absolutely certain the Super Two deadline has passed" is a new goal. That or Brodie Van Heusen really really hates Jeff McNeil.

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

Got no problem with the player or the price, but unless one of our infielders is an outfielder in disguise, or a trade or two is in the works, the money could have filled much bigger needs.

I still think the Yankees might take Frazier for Sonny Gray. What I wouldn't do is give up a cost-controlled position player with five or six years of control for bullpen help.

Holy shit I completely forgot we added Ramos.

Fine. Then. I guess we shouldn't probably do that. But I'm still thinking this has got to be a prelude to a trade of Rosario to somewhere else.

Maybe Frazier gets the boot instead, but I don't see that as being able to help us actually add to the team except in a salary dump that then allows a big signing. Is that too many moving pieces...?

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

You need to spend a LOT more time in the roster thread. Like, a LOT.

Lowrie can probably backup, but I gather that he isn't really a shortstop in the everyday sense anymore. So whatever redundancies there are, Rosario probably isn't among them.

Maybe they'll get all Randolphy and stack the team with extra infielders, using them as their backup outfielders as well.

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

Having slept (some) on it... if Lowrie stays healthy, this is actually a GREAT deal. Since 2017, he's made Murphy-ish late-career loft/hard-contact rate strides. He's insurance at both corners (in case Alonso is ready, e.g.) AND Rosario caddy in addition to another 2B body. If Frazier moves, cool. If not... will we complain if 6 mostly-vet guys get 400-plus PAs a piece? (Or 500 x 5, and 300 for whomever at 1B?)

The Royals have 2 years remaining with Jorge Soler for a total of $9.3 million and no established 3B. No idea if he is recovered from injury or if they really could use Frazier. Soler generally bad with the glove but a decent right-handed bat. File this in the WATP category.

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

Lowrie is a good player, super on-basey, and seems to fit this (or probably any team) pretty well as he can start/cover all over the infield.

It's a little odd as our infield is pretty full, but it seemingly only pushes Dom Smith or TJ Rivera to irrelevance and McNeil to more sporadic PT in the outfield. Cynically, it does make me wonder if it's also insurance in case Alonso isn't ready or they want to manipulate his service time a little and keep him in AAA "for seasoning". I think they'd be happy to start the season with Cano getting most of the time at first, Lowrie at second, and Frazier at third with McNeil plugging in where ever needed.

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

Cano isn't moving off 1b until he can't play 2b anymore. And nobody is taking Frazier off our hands. And they clearly don't think McNeil can replicate his last season.

If Lowrie is healthy, I think this move forces Frazier to 1b to start the season, and he'll stay there unless and until Alonzo hits his way up a month or 2 later (with Super2 status intact). If/When Alonzo comes up, a few things will happen: (1) whoever is not hitting between Lowrie and Frazier becomes the IF backup; (2) they're going to use McNeil in the OF, too, which will force Dom Smith back to AAA; and (3) there will be no room for Rivera, and he probably doesn't have any options left, so he (or Frazier) gets traded or cut. This signing comes down to Lowrie taking ABs from Frazier, and some from McNeil and Rivera, too, before ultimately replacing Rivera on the roster... which I'm all fine with. Could they have used $10m better? I don't know; neither do you.

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

when Alonzo comes up and Cespedes comes back (replacing Frazier and Lagares), it has the makings of a great lineup, particularly if Rosario continues the progress he showed toward the end of last season.

I'm also assuming JDDavis still has options left. If not, he takes Rivera's role and Rivera's out from the outset.

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

fwiw, mlb.com is doing a ranking by position project and we somehow wound up employing two of the top four 2nd basemen in the game today.

1. Jose Altuve

2. Jed Lowrie

3. Whit Merrifield

4. Robinson Cano

5. Chris Taylor

6. Scooter Gennett

7. Joey Wendle

8. Gleyber Torres

9. Ben Zobrist

10. DJ LeMahieu

Now all we have to do is effect some sort of rule change which allows us to play them both at the same position at the same time.

The rankings were done "based on player performance over the last two seasons, a number of offensive and defensive metrics, both advanced data and traditional numbers and analysis

by the MLB Network research team."

Apparently there was some sort of show that went along with this list's release (and also their 3B list upon which we placed no one) which aired Saturday night on MLBN with input from

a number of their on-air slate of personalities, a show I suspect will be re-run multiple times over the coming week for those so inclined.

Their choices at other positions will air over the next several weeks.

It's strange isn't it? In isolation, I think Lowrie is a nice move. Good productive player on a relatively short-term deal. Gives the team depth all around the infield.

It may make all the sense in the world once we see the finished product, but right now it's hard to see how the pieces fit together.

Before the off-season, one could pencil in McNeil and Alonso and 2nd and 1st, and put the focus on 3B.

Since then, Brodie has brought in 2 other second basemen in their mid 30's making a combined $30 million. While the 26 year old superstar looking for $30 million per has gone untouched. And yeah, I get it, the total contract worth would not be in the same stratosphere, but there was definitely room in the budget.

I mean, would you rather go Machado-McNeil, or Lowrie-Cano?

Re: Jed Lowrie--We Care About Him Now

=Centerfield post_id=1110 time=1547478536 user_id=65]I mean, would you rather go Machado-McNeil, or Lowrie-Cano?

That's an easy one, or at least it should be. Yeah, we'd still have Bruce and Swarzak and not have Diaz, but we could actually use the extra OF/1B right now and the difference between Diaz 2018 and Swarzak 2017 is about one win. And the 2021 version of the team would be in far better shape than it currently is.

But it seems like the whole league is doing this right now. Did the Yankees really just opt for Tulowitzki and DJ LeMahieu? Were they really OK with giving more money to LeMahieu than the Mets just gave to a demonstrably better player, when Machado is still available? I figured teams were getting under the luxury tax threshold last year in order to spend this year -- the difference in the available free agents was large enough to at least understand that rationale -- but the lack of action this year is mind-boggling.

The owners are creating a crisis that has the potential to be worse than the one in 1994, and they can easily afford to prevent it.

He mentioned that the team has some older dudes in the infield who should not be expected to play 162 games, and said they will need more days off. BVW also spoke of having depth for when someone goes down w/ injury. Of course he's not going to say, "I'm still trying to trade Todd Frazier's ass," but it sounds like Brody Van Spraytan wants to rotate all these guys.

A few days after the Mets signed Lowrie, the MFYs signed DJ Le Mahiew for $2 million more per year. Lowrie had significantly better numbers than DJ in the two year prior to the signings and DJ was older than Lowrie. It looked like the Mets had gotten the better of those deals.

Funny how it worked out in 2019. (Actually, NOT funny at all)

Later
