The Daily News is reporting on the passing of Mel Stottlemyer, star pitcher of the 1960s and pitching coach for the Mets for 10 impressive years, including the World Championship year of 1986.

Verry sorry to hear that - may he rest in peace. A great pitcher and coach. Nice article by Madden. I did not know the story of the Steinbrenner apology and Mel's insistence on the additional 40k signing bonus to become the Yankees pitching coach.

As much as I disliked him as an MFY pitcher, I liked him as a Met coach. RIP. Later

I just always assume that Steinbrenner was forced to apologize to just about everyone he employed at one time or another.

Funny how that tends to be the result of deciding to treat people like shit simply because you can but then realize that you need them at some future date.
