Michael Cuddyer went into the Twins HOF in 2017. I initially misread a "this date in Twins history" as a current thing, but let's continue to enjoy Cuddy's good fortune.

I'll always be grateful for him getting injured in 2014 so that Jacob deGrom could show he could pitch in the majors.

Re: Brogna Bros: Mets in Retirement 2019

A former Opening Day starter who had a nice career.

In all, Gee will retire with a career 51-48 record, a 4.09 ERA, 6.5 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and 1.2 HR/9 over the life of 853 2/3 Major League innings. Though he'll retire at a relatively young age, Gee still did quite well for himself in baseball, taking home north of $13MM in player salaries — a sum that most 21st-round selections can scarcely fathom.

And, a fairly funny bit on the MLB Man Cave.

Re: Brogna Bros: Mets in Retirement 2019

Gee was on the DL in 2014, making him fair game for Jay Horwitz to drag him over to our Blogger Night group for a brief quasi-media scrum. This was the season when no Mets pitcher had gotten a hit for more than a month into the season, a streak that was either ended by rookie deGrom or at least put into stark relief by his early success as a hitter. I asked Dillon a lighthearted question about Jake maybe giving the other pitchers a couple of pointers. Dillon's response regarding the pitchers' hitting to that point:

"We suck."

He wasn't smiling. I appreciated that.

Re: Brogna Bros: Mets in Retirement 2019

Ron Hunt has taken too many lickings, but keeps on ticking.

They find smiles amid the pain, because that's all they can do. Ron and Jackie, who met as teenagers at Ritenour High School, have been married since 1961. Two years later, Ron made his major league debut and soon made his living getting hit by pitches. He got hits, too — a .273 lifetime average in 12 years – but Ron Hunt was famous for getting plunked. He set a seemingly unbreakable mark when he was hit by pitches 50 times in one year.

He retired after 243 HBPs, some even to the head. Tom Seaver beaned him good once. Combined with innumerable concussions from a football past and, well, “I have Parkinson's now,” Ron said.

It's possible he could've gotten the neurodegenerative disorder regardless. But a doctor told the Hunts that it could've resulted from injuries during his playing days.

Ron's hand tremors. He's hard to understand at times. He takes a physical therapy class involving boxing because, Jackie said, “they're trying to get your feet to work with your hands again.”

And he falls a lot. A couple weeks ago, a particular tumble scared Jackie because Ron was “upside down,” she said. “His head was down and his legs were up.”

“My life's a (expletive) now,” Ron said Wednesday from their home in Wentzville.

That was a great callup day in 1980 — I think Wally Backman was a day off in getting the callup, but he and Mookie debuted on the second, and Brooks on the fourth.

The Mets were still awful, but at least it felt like they were awful with the lights on. Mookie and Hubie instantly became regulars, but the Mets strangely wasted almost three years trying to convince themselves that Brian Giles was their secondbaseman of the future, while Backman fumed, riding the Tidewater shuttle for three seasons.
