Tell me a story

I am reading Nicholas Nickelby, and the cover of the book has this awesome picture by Vautier the Elder. It is called "After Class"

ALso came across this slightly different version....

I am enthralled by these pictures! Notice the boys are wearing different outfits...some of them traded from one boy to another. The young teacher on the right. Did he grow up wanting to teach young ruffian boys, or was it just his lot in life? He looks unhealthy. Pallid skin, red ears and nose. He also looks about 19 years old.

Cannot find a word of information about the pictures, but I love to make up stories about things like this. What's up with the kid with the jaw bandage? Is the boy with an umbrella the class priss? How about the little redhead with an eye patch? What's the blonde kid on the top picture yelling at the boy with the bandage? By the way the little darling doffing his hat at the teacher on the top picture looks just like my grandson in a few years :)

Any thoughts?

I guess they didn't have Novocaine back then. Or opioid painkillers. Just tie a rag around where the pain is to make the hurting go away. I bet they also thought you could render your opponent unconscious with a well placed karate chop to the neck.

Also, no one's gonna mess with umbrella boy and try to swipe his umbrella because umbrella boy looks to be the biggest kid there. Except for toothache boy but toothache boy's in too much pain to instigate schoolyard brawls on this day.

Painters in the 19th century would often paint variations of the same painting multiple times. They had to make a living and had a hit painting. Kind of like singers churning out their hits night after night.

I like the less colorful one. Seems more appropriate for the winter scene.

I think the kid with the bandage around his jaw might have a toothache.

The cure is to tie a string around your tooth and have somebody hand you a saber-tooth tiger.

It seems like the Flintstones haven't been able to make the jump to this generation's kids.

It's a shame. The world is better with Flintstones.

The second version is the original studio mix.

The first was released later on and only after the artist did what every artist did when he wanted to smooth out the rough edges back in the '70s (1870s in this case) ...

he brought in Michael McDonald to apply the finishing touches.

I feel like Little Pockets has seen some things... things he won't be able to unpack for another century-and-a-quarter, when therapy comes into vogue.

Little Pockets is looking for the plum he got in his stocking for Christmas. The ONLY thing he got for Christmas

And that rapscallion behind him is eating it

I always wonder where the bottom of that bandage goes. It's not like Barney has a neck. Does this thing wrap right through the wickets or what?

Wonder about the kid in the top picture doing a little Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury bit with the bandana over one eye. Probably got nailed with a slushball last week.

The kid in front of him looks like he's ready to belt out his rendition of Oklahoma! that just KILLED in summer stock last year, but probably goes right over the heads of these English kids.
