Do You Even Lift Bro? Working Out in 2019!

My awesome streak of consecutive workout days to start 2019 ended at....one. Stupid cold/cough has knocked me out the last few days. I might try to jump on an elliptical for a few minutes tonight just to get back on the horse.

I ended December a full 15 lbs heavier than I was during the summer. So I would really like to try to get back in the gym. As I get older I'm finding it harder and harder to keep weight off my mid-section. Would love to hear what others here have found successful.

My plan is to mix in about 20 minutes of weights, 20 minutes of cardio or HIIT. At least once a week, I'll try for a longer (4-5 mile) run. There's also a pilates studio opening up in my building. I know Pilates has been around for a while but I have literally no idea what it is.

What are you guys doing to stay chiseled?

Re: Do You Even Lift Bro? Working Out in 2019!

My New Years resolution (every year) is to get to the gym twice a week. In 2018 I made it 94 times.

I do 30 minutes each on a stationary bike and an elliptical, plus free weights (bench and curl).

I'm in the best shape of my life--now if I could just lose this belly.

I signed up with these guys in 2017, but it wasn't til last year I fully embraced the cult known as Orange Theory Fitness. Each workout is a one-hour trainer-led group session which rotates between treadmill, rower and a thousand different types of floor exercises (free weights, TRX, bosa ball, all kinds of stuff). I was pretty happy to see the changes in the amount of weights I was lifting, my times on the treadmill, etc. not to mention getting a little leaner. I ruined all my good progress by going on vacation in the south, which sent me on a glorious two month tailspin of drinking bourbon and eating fried chicken, but I can't help but recommend the place.

Re: Do You Even Lift Bro? Working Out in 2019!

i decided just this week that, since i'm not actually running or doing any cardio, that i might as well get my fat ass into a gym. dusted off my old lifting notebook - its last page dates to 2009. i'm pretty sure i'd never started up a new one, as that was about the time i'd transitioned over to midday running instead of midday lifting.

way, way back in the day i'd been going at least 3 times a week. i don't think i'll be able to do that, as currently it interferes with PT, and in the very near future, it will ideally also interfere with running. but i can commit to one day a week in the gym. plus, i intend fully to keep up my PT and core work, which i can do at home.

my routine had been to hit up all the nautilus-type upper body machines, three sets of ten. relatively slow reps - no jerky, fast motions.

so yesterday - thursday, my new lifting day - i got up to the gym, and felt pretty good. i knocked down the weights of what i'd done when last i did it, basically 10% less weight, rounded up. did the workout with ease - most were way too easy at that reduced weight, which was a happy discovery! and i've got a baseline upon which to build moving forward. we'll see where it goes from here.

I've been considering signing up for one of those home workout, beachbody thingies, but as of now, i don't want to be too aggressive in my workouts so as to not do any stupidness to my hip while it recovers. plus those things always involve burpees. and every time i do burpees, i either end up feeling like i just twisted my knee, or pulled a hammy, or both.

Re: Do You Even Lift Bro? Working Out in 2019!

side note: i have found that not running for nearly 6 months is a good way to stay not-chiseled. i'm currently brushing up against 220. which is just way too much weight on me. granted, it's only 5-10 pounds more than i've been for the past, um, 15 years. but still. i feel the difference, and do not like it. inexplicably, the weight gain is not yet hampering my volleyball game. though i cannot help but wonder how much better i'd be with 20 pounds off my gut.

This implies I ever was chiseled.

I lost maybe 10 pounds -- and, perhaps not surprisingly, a bit of strength/mass -- on account of laying on my back for a week and a half back in June.

On a positive note, I've gained only a chunk of that back so I'm actually leaner than I've been in a while while working out at about the same level as before helped out

by a 12-week/3x per post-hospital rehab program which eased me back into things. [CROSSOUT]So clearly my advice for losing weight here is: Step 1 - Keel over, Step 2 ...[/CROSSOUT]

I get bored (and/or tired) from long workouts so I try to do 1/2 hr lifting sessions more often (3-4 x/week - though am currently battling a cold as well) as opposed to those

who believe that if you're not essentially pitching a tent and camping out at the gym for extended stays then you're nothing more than a dilettante. I mix in maybe 2x/week

25-minute elliptical sessions on top of that and am currently contemplating starting a running program for cardio purposes.

Re: Do You Even Lift Bro? Working Out in 2019!

I just do a ton of cardio. I've never been able to find any joy in weight training. It's been 15+ years since I did it with any regularity.

But OH, the cardio I do! I am running 5-6 days per week, most days for a half hour, with a longer run or two on the weekends. My idea of a long run is a 8-10 miler, for reference. In the summer I cross train by biking a few days a week. This time of year it's the elliptical.

The key is consistent, regular activity. I exercise six days a week. Fridays are my rest days. I nap after work. Every other day I'm getting my sweat on. I went from 202 lbs in December of 2001 (I am 5'10", or was when I was 18 at least) to 150 lbs in the fall of 2002, and aside from a lapse in the 2006-2007 age where I got back over 170, still hanging out at 150 today. I eat all day (and drink plenty at night) but I burn it all off.

Re: Do You Even Lift Bro? Working Out in 2019!

In the fall of 2009, I got up to 225 pounds and decided I obviously needed to make some changes in my lifestyle. Marathon, Cookie Mom (met Fairy), and others (I think it was about that same time that Fman seriously took up running) were running and leading healthy lifestyles. They inspired me to give working out a try, since dieting obviously wasn't working for me. I joined a gym practically across the street from my neighborhood and started working out and walking 3-4 days a week. I set an initial goal of running 5 miles in under 50 minutes before my 50th birthday, which at that time was roughly 8 months away.

I eventually ran the 5 miles in a little under 45 minutes (if memory serves right) a month prior to my 50th birthday and my weight was down 195 pounds. I eventually kept increasing my running speed until I was regularly running 5 miles in 32-33 minutes and ran 5k in 19:15-19:30 (granted on a treadmill with air conditioning & TV) a few times a year. At 58.5 years of age, I have slowed the pace of my running considerably, while steadily increasing the weight and intensity of my lifting. I now lift weights for 45-60 minutes, then run on the treadmill for 30-45 minutes 3-4 days a week. My weight seems stuck between 190-195 pounds (which is still a lot when you're 5'6"), but I'm healthy and pretty fit, so I'm happy with that.

That's the main reason I need to run, though I do more 16 ounce curls now days.

Re: Do You Even Lift Bro? Working Out in 2019!

Finally shook the cough that I've had since New Year's so I'm back at the gym this week. Tired.

I did manage to lose 8 lbs while sick though. If anyone is looking to drop a few pounds, I recommend coming into my office and standing around the cubicles where people are coughing.

If you need encouragement, when George Burns (then 96) was asked if he exercised, he answered, "The only exercise I get is carrying the caskets of my friends who exercise."
