So the song 'It's my Party and I'll Cry if I Want To' by Leslie Gore is about a girl having her boyfriend stolen at her party. What I never realized was that 'It's Judy's Turn to Cry' , on the same album is the story of her stealing the same boy back and exacting her revenge. Sheesh. Teenagers.

Zion Williamson is an athletic freak of nature. He's built like and NFL tight end (6'7" and 275-280 lbs.) and has a 40+" vertical. As a Duke fan, I have watched all their games this year and the 360 dunk isn't nearly the most impressive thing he has done in a game this season.

Now that is some serious hops!

Best of all, he seems to be a very grounded young man.

He'd already be a pro if the rules weren't rigged against him. As would more than a few of the guys who played for Clemson & Alabama the other day, but some of them will have to

wait multiple years in order to cash in seeing as how the NFL + NCAA in football are stronger cartels than the NBA + NCAA are in basketball.

I don't get why most every mock draft has the Cavs picking first and selecting Zion. Under the new lottery rules, the teams with the three worst records have the exact same odds of selecting first overall in the upcoming draft. So long as the Knicks, currently with the 2d worst record in the league don't finish with the 4th worst record or better, they have as good a chance as anybody at getting the 1st pick and, presumably, drafting Zion.

My street is somewhat unique. It has a name that's shared by the park behind our house and the local grade school my son went to, but nothing else. There's no other street in America (or anywhere else in the world, for that matter) that shares its name. Googling page after page using that name brings up nothing but those three things.

And I kind of like that.

(Also, it's a hard name to pronounce, so the GPS always screws it up, as does any automated device, not to mention the guys delivering Chinese food.)

We may complain about how much golf Donald Trump plays, but Woodrow Wilson beats him by a mile. In his 8 years (1913-1921) he reportedly played over 1,000 rounds of golf. And the last two years of his presidency he was incapacitated by a stroke (pardon the pun). During World War I, Wilson played golf virtually every single day to relieve the stress. He even had the Secret Service paint golf balls black so he could play in the snow.

Craving some Green Goddess dressing, I looked up the recipe and learned Green Goddess dressing was invented in the 1920s by a chef at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco to commemorate the actor George Arliss and his play, The Green Goddess. The Palace Hotel is one of my favorite joints to stay at in SF, particularly to visit the Pied Piper Bar in the lobby and gaze upon the Maxfield Parrish backbar painting of The Pied Piper of Hamelin while enjoying a libation. I am easily amused.

Another claim to dubious fame for The Palace is that it's the hotel where Warren G. Harding died of cardiac arrest in 1923.

I saw it when it was first released. We all were appropriately stoned, therefore totally freaked out by the ending. It's possible I've never seen it again since except to pick out the scenes on YouTube that Nicholson was in before he was a household name. Stuck in the 70s as I am, my favorite Nicholson movies remain Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. After years of ignoring it, I finally watched The Two Jakes a month or two ago and, except for Harvey Keitel, it was absolutely a waste of time.

At first I was going to say this in the Politics thread but it's really more an Apropos of Nothing statement.

As a legal but nonpracticing Jew, I will continue to exercise my inalienable right to vote for the party of my choice. I have pledged allegiance to our flag since first grade and therefore have the right to vote straight Democratic yesterday, today, and into the future - despite what Hair Furor says about it - which I have and plan to do as long as I remain above ground. I pay taxes to the IRS, which means I am more loyal than he is since he pays no taxes and brags about it.

As well, my latest, newest hero is Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. She joins that exalted, elite corps of women who have pissed off Trump and caused him to humiliate himself even further, another line that continues to move away, be reached yet again, and then crossed.

The NRA has thrown a hissy fit because Wal-Mart, whom the NRA does not own, has chosen to stop selling bullets. I applaud that; hence, I am lumped with the "anti-gun elite." Presumably, no one at the NRA saw fit to look up the word elite. Of the five definitions I found instantly, this is my favorite: "the socially superior part of society." I can live with that. We have a guy named Dave living in our neighborhood. He walks around with two funny older dogs. About a year ago, a third dog joined the pack as well as a woman. He introduced her as his fiancé. I didn't get the name. They wed about six months ago, and she also brought a daughter to the marriage.

Yesterday, she knocked on our door and as Dave stood behind her, she let us know her name was Rain and she was running for City Council. I stepped out on the porch and we had a nice conversation. I asked about her platform and background, and welcomed her to the race and told her I'd be happy to consider supporting her.

This weekend we were taking care of a neighbor's dog and when we went over to feed the pooch, I saw she had also left a flyer on their porch. I suddenly realized she was more than a neighbor running for City Council — she's Richard Pryor's daughter. I have no idea where I've seen her before or how I know anything about her, but I was certain she was his daughter. Maybe seeing the name "Pryor" on the flyer just rang a bell. But it's a pretty common name. It's not like her name was Gyllenhall or Vanilli.

I got home and looked her up and confirmed. Holy crap, I supposedly live in a rat-infested hellhole, but a semi-celebrity lives here with me and wants to represent my interests in the city council.

I spent some time listening to Ceetar's podcast but ended up getting depressed. I'm only 5+ years into retirement but I don't recognize your workplace environment at all. But that was not what depressed me. It was that when I was working, I am quite certain I was not "monitored" throughout the day because, if I were, I'd have been paid a bunch more overtime than I got. Speaking of retirement, Mrs. Lefty and I are thinking of pulling the ripcord in about a year. We've saved diligently, our house is paid off, our financial advisor says we have enough to pull it off, Jr has snagged his first job and is disconnecting from the financial umbilical cord, we're healthy (knock on wood), and we're getting tired of the rat race and commuting to the city every day.

But while we CAN do it, I wonder if we should. What's the secret to a happy retirement? I intend to do things and not sit around the house eating bonbons and watching The View, but I worry about the effects of downshifting.

What's the secret and what are the pitfalls?

hey thanks for listening!

I don't think most companies are monitored, besides a firewall (certain sites/categories flat out blocked.) but it'll probably be coming more and more. Except the big ones. We have all these awesome sci-fi movies about dystopian futures and evil governments and corporations running everything and it's like we learn nothing from them!

to sum up: There are software packages out there that companies can install on their network to basically analyse Slack chatter, email chatter, how fast emails are responded to, how often, etc. Some of them claim they're not providing individual employee level stuff, but who knows really. They know how many memes you post to your company slack.

See, now I'm completely convulsed with laughter at how out of date I am. I was probably completely eclipsed by the first 18 months after blowing the pop stand. This in particular: "They know how many memes you post to your company slack." This sentence would have been gibberish to me in 2014, which is not to say it makes instant sense now but I do realize the point. Back in the day, I thought I was plenty scrutinized due to working for my State's government and our email, as we were constantly reminded, was not private but belonged to the State and there were enforced rules about its use. Woe to thee who failed to uphold those standards. Nevertheless, I suspect I'd be more than a bit paranoid in today's workplace and am grateful not to need to participate.

I'll be interested to hear your next podcast and compare my obliviousness to the real world again.

I like Omnibus, though I haven't listened in a while since I devoted time to catching up on The Dungeon Run. D&D campaign/story done really well. On Caffeine.TV which I guess the model is to allow users to purchase digital items so there are random "force of good, force of evil" type events that the DM has to weave in. It's absurd, but fun too.

Welcome to the world of limited playlists.

It could be that several of those stations are owned under the same umbrella, but that's not necessarily the case. I remember realizing that 'Classic Rock' had gotten way too formulaic when I'd hear

the same 25 or so y/o song playing at the same time on two different and supposedly competing radio stations, sometimes just seconds off from each other. That it happened at the same time

was certainly random, but such stuff began to happen far too frequently to be anything other than multiple stations trying to hook the same audience by working off the same marketing reports and

restricted computer-generated playlists.

FK, that has been mentioned here before. Yet those stations say they have different formats (I'm paraphrasing from their self-promos):

WHUD (Hudson Valley), Music from the 80's, 90's and today

WCBS-FM (New York), New York favorites

WDRC-FM (Hartford), Classic Rock.

But what I found interesting is that WEBE advertises itself as "Locally managed and locally owned". I guess that doesn't mean they draw up their own play lists.

Yet that song found it's way to all four stations.

Went to a small gathering at my cousin Nancy's for the day after Thanksgiving. I went to get a tasty beverage and got into a conversation with a polite, handsome young bearded man. I couldn't place which of my cousins he belonged to. But you know, when you live out of town and you only get back once or twice a year, kids change.

In this case, quite literally. I got a beverage for my wife, walked back, and sat down next to her, and realized, "Oh, that's Nancy's son, Kieran." The reason I didn't realize earlier is that up until last year, he was Nancy's daughter, Kieran. Pretty convenient that she gave her girl a boy's name all those years ago. But pretty fascinating how this just happened and my family moved on. No gossiping around the room. No pointing. She had been wrapping her chest up since puberty, and we got the message, but now that since the spring, she's transitioned to the point of presenting herself as an outright male, it's yesterday's news.

I can't say I know the whole story, because we're really good at not talking about shit in my family, but he seemed for all purposes to be a healthy, happy, loved young man. And of course there's no reason he shouldn't be, but what should be and what is don't always fit together in such a scenario. Of course I've had acquaintances who've transitioned before, but not ones who are still teenagers living at home. In fact, usually even with full-grown adults living well apart from their families, I don't tend to see it happen without a lot of pain and trauma under the bridge and no small amount yet to come.

If i'm being honest I don't really find bacon on a cheeseburger to be worth it. it's the wrong shape and texture. You can get smokey or salty from the beef or a sauce if that's what you're after.

I was checking out the "people you may know" photos on Facebook, and my daughter's picture was there.

How do they know?

You probably have mutual fb friends?

I can't think of any, and she is there under her married last name without ours as a middle name. So that's why t'is a puzzlement.

My wife doesn't want me to friend any of our family or show their pictures. I don't think she trusts "those people on the Internet" I associate with (even though she has met you).

your facebook is linked to your phone number which has her number as a contact which is linked to her facebook.

Twitter/other places do the same thing.

This is actually a good trick (shh don't tell) for say finding Howie Rose's twitter if you have his phone number. Just make a new twitter account linked to a new google phone number with only his number in your contacts.

Re: Apropos of Nothing 2019

I don't do Facebook on my phone, only my home PC, which only has names and email addresses in the contacts, not phone numbers.

But it is something to think about, those sneaky bastages.

Thanks.

We have the same situation here - Our oldest's best friend, and roommate was Amanda and is now Zach. He's more comfortable, and spends his holidays with us instead of his family.

Re: Apropos of Nothing 2019

I'm no food scientist, but I wouldn't be surprised of if someone started putting tomato on a burger to try to mask the dryness of the burger with the juicy tomato. I could take it or leave it personally, but sometimes I do enjoy that cold/crunch contrast of the lettuce and tomato.

"Dynamic contrast" is probably most of it, along with the sweet/acid that a good tomato provides cutting the unctuousness of a fat-on-fat-on-fat-on-bread sandwich. Considering how short tomato season really is-- and how good in-season tomatoes are in almost every other sandwich/salad deployment-- I tend to go with stuff like onion (pickled or otherwise) for the crunch, and a touch of mustard or spicy mayo or-- horrors!-- some kind of ketchup mix for the acid. Bacon isn't bad. On a good, well-cooked burger, though? It's a little extraneous. Maybe, along with the cheese, it helps mellow out a raw onion sharpness. But you get fat and salt and complex meatiness from, like, the burger, don'cha?

Unless you're a hamster or some other creature that can't brush its own teeth, lettuce is generally pointless.

American or cheddar, though? Or are y'all one of them fancy Noo Yawk types, with your French cheeses and sech?

I'm actually not that picky with cheese. it's all good! I prefer a generous helping of it. one american cheese slice ain't doing it. Cheddar if being offered those options. I'll do mozzarella too.

I've always wondered about hamburgers with a tomato slice AND ketchup. Isn't that overkill?

Y'know what's good with a thin slice or three of slightly-oven-dried, in-season tomato? A nice grilled cheese. Only you wedge it in there AFTER you press/sear the sandwich.

Coming home from work Saturday afternoon, my car overheated on the highway and had to be towed to a garage.

Won't know the outcome until Monday.

Good thing I did all my holiday shopping early this year.
