Kurd Loder still at it in 2k19

"It is somehow 2019 and that means it's the 25th Anniversary of one of the best-selling albums of all-time - Hootie & the Blowfish's debut album of frat-friendly jock jams, Cracked Rear View. As the "CYBER STUFF" graphic behind me alludes to, there will probably be a bloated 25th anniversary release available to stream online, as well as a likely vinyl re-release because that medium has experienced a sensational resurgence, which from my seat here in 1994, feels incredibly unlikely!" Cracked Rear View has sold 14.5 million copies and has been certified platinum 21 times! HOW!? Well, we at MTV certainly played a lot of Darius Rucker's Miami Dolphins-inspired love ballads and you ate them up and asked for another serving! To celebrate Hootie's 25th anniversary, here is "Let Her Cry" from the #9 (!!!) best selling album in music history. This single alone somehow has 54 million streams on a thing called YouTube. The future scares me. Tabitha, are you there? Please help me."

Is Kurd Loder here possibly Kurt Loder's cousin from the middle east?

Or does this one just like cottage cheese?

Someone posted this nooz on fb the other day and another guy noted that a Rolling Stone reviewer was canned for having given a turd review to followup FAIRWEATHER JOHNSON -- if I'd known that I'd forgotten it. Details: http://www.furious.com/perfect/hootie.html

I always liked Rucker's voice -- like Pearl Jam only without the shot-up classrooms -- and yes they were probably the whitest band ever to have a black frontman and totally not edgy but the record sounds great.

On Saturday I streamed this record and FAIRWEATHER (not as good), and then some Gin Blossoms, and Joan Osborne's RELISH, then some Hooters and had a total 90s white-guy hoedown.

Wow, the lines about the dB's Peter Holsapple and the Bud Lite/psychedelic drug bit are solid gold zingers. That Jim DeRogatis has a great podcast with Greg Kot on NPR. I never miss their end-of-year Best Of's.

It was only a decade or so ago - right here on the Crane Pool - that someone made me aware that Hootie and the Blowfish was lead by an African American vocalist. Life imitating an "Amazon Women on the Moon" sketch.

Re: Kurd Loder still at it in 2k19

I kind of felt bad for them by the time their next record came out. Cracked Rear View was a decent record that had gotten so horrifically overexposed that, after about a year of being completely incapable of escaping them, nobody ever, ever, EVER wanted to hear them again. But if I had known that was a top-10 all time seller and still would be in 2019, I would have felt significantly less bad for them.

I like the Hooters! If you are inclined, check out a 2009 live album called "Both Sides Live." One side is an electric set before a Philly audience, and the other is a stripped down acoustic set. Pretty much the same songs, but both sound great.

Saw them at Toad's in New Haven on the tour supporting Zig Zag, then kind of lost track of them. This album has the songs you'd demand, and introduced me to some then-newer stuff. I made a playlist for running that had the familiar stuff first, but later returned it to the proper order because "I'm Alive" and "Time Stand Still" are awesome.

It's one of the best-sounding live albums I've ever heard.

I like the Hooters too. I played em after Joan Osborne even tho they weren't actually a 90s act since they co-wrote and performed many of the songs on the RELISH album. They hit with a big heartland/ska/dance pop album then went full-blown folk-Americana on the next few records that were pretty unpopular everywhere except Sweden and Germany where they are stars.

Joan Osborne can hit ya in the gut sometimes:

    He was squinting and stubbled

    And standing in the door

He said if you've come to take the car away

    I don't have it anymore

    I don't have it anymore

He got the gospel on the radio

    And the gospel on TV

He got all of the transcripts

    Back to 1963

    Back to 1963

He said I sold my blood for money

    There wasn't any pain

But I just can't stand the feeling

    It's in someone else's veins

    Momma took me aside

And she tried to change my mind

She said, don't waste your time in looking

    Nothing, nothing left to find

So I left him down in Pensacola

Kurt checking in here with the news that you can add Peter Frampton to the gang heading into (or already completed) the final tour of their careers.

In Frampton's case, he's been hit by I.B.M. -- Inclusion Body Myositis -- a muscle weakening disease for which there is no cure although it generally doesn't shorten lifespans.

Figuring that “in a year's time, I might not be able to play ... [so] I want to record as much as I can in the shortest space of time”, the 68 y/o Frampton will release a double

album this summer and do a tour of "about 50 dates" across the country.

He has known about the diagnosis for about several years but is just now going public with that news and hopes to be part of a drug trial at Johns Hopkins.

Looks a bit like the trailer posted (on the old board) for YESTERDAY, the film where the history of -- Hell, the very existence of -- the Beatles somehow only exist in the mind of one person.

Both are British made films with a heavy music plot line and both are also built around a South-Asian/English protagonist

The south-Asian-ness of the main character seems like a larger piece of the plot in this here 'BLINDED' (a la BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM) as opposed to YESTERDAY, but it's still nice to see

some English roles being filled by those not so stereotypically English.

YESTERDAY is sked for a late-June release, with BLINDED slated for mid-August

Kurt Loder here with some disturbing controversy from Waukesha, Wisconsin. Seems there is more--a lot more--between the estranged frontmen of 80s rootrockers BoDeans than your typical songwriting royalty division and who-gets-custody-of-the-band-name disputes, although they too rage.

I'm only now getting word that the stepdaughter of Kurt Nuemann, now in her late 20s, has accused Nuemann's former co-leader Sam Llanas of having abused her as young as age 9 and continuing for several years. This story actually broke last summer but the BoDeans have faded so far into memory it wasn't till I got nostalgic the other night and pulled out "Love&Hope&Sex&Dreams" that I came across this sordid tale. My apologies for the lazy journalism not up to thye standards I set at MTV.

This story is taking on the same contours of so many #MeToo incidents, with a victim coming forward many years after the incident that's difficult to prove and a requisite full-throated denial from the accused, but my counterparts at the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel did their homework and in my journalistic chops sharpened by many years at MTV News, can say this looks very bad for Mr. Llanas, who nonetheless claims it's all a smear campaign to keep royalties from him.

Always ironic when folks who can sing in such perfect harmony develop such inharmonious relationships.

Llanas and Nuemann formed the BoDeans as high-school buds in the early 80s and was once celebrated as Best New American Band by Rolling Stone. After a terrific debut album they kind of hit the creative wall so many of their heartland-rock counterparts did as the decade progressed, even though they never really sucked and could make anything sound great by singing it. Stay tuned for more.

Re: Kurd Loder still at it in 2k19

Llanas quit back in 2011. He just didn't show up for a performance and didn't contact anybody until the next day. When he said that he wanted to take some time off to focus on promoting his solo material, they were all, "Whatever, dude. If you want to quit, fine. But leaving us high and dry like that in the middle of the tour is total bullshit. We thought you were dead."

They subsequently made it clear that he wouldn't be welcome back under any terms. I'm not sure if the allegations became known at that time or anything. I saw them two or three years ago, and it not only didn't feel right without Llanas' voice, but it felt tired. They were recording the show for a video release, but it felt like they were trying to squeeze juice out of a dried-up fruit. It's funny, because as right as the harmonies feel, Llanas singing on his own gets old pretty fast.

The best part was getting up-close seats to see Kenny Aronoff on drums. He's still terrific.

I discovered this column on Stereogum where the author is writing a review of every song that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 starting with the introduction of that chart in 1958. He's up to 1974 right now. It's pretty fascinating to see what songs reached #1 and how they played into the cultural zeitgeist of the time.

    Some observations:

    1. The #1 songs rarely represent the best music of an era (probably not a surprise to most of us).

    2. By extension, some of the great bands and artists of all time failed to have their best songs reach #1, although sometimes their lesser work achieves that feat.

    3. Absolutely bonkers novelty songs are often #1 songs. I'm not against novelty songs, but it seems strange that it's what people will spend the greatest amount of money on in a particular week.

I also like little tidbits like when "Sukiyaki" reached #1 in 1963, it meant that songs in the languages of all the Axis powers - German, Italian, and Japanese - had reached #1 in the US within 20 years of the end of World War II.

Also, speaking of #1s, we here at MTV News are saddened to report that music legend Brian Wilson's health is on the rocks again, but he continues to be positive and confront his issues head-on.

It's not that Brian's music has been unblemished in latter years, but the late-life comeback of his mental health situation has been one of the most rewarding stories we've covered. From myself, Tabitha, Chris, and the Music News staff, we wish Brian lots of health and happiness in the years ahead.

    Dear friends,

It is with great regret that I need to postpone my upcoming June tour.

It is no secret that I have been living with mental illness for many decades. There were times when it was unbearable but with doctors and medications I have been able to live a wonderful, healthy and productive life with support from my family, friends and fans who have helped me through this journey.

As you may know in the last year or so I've had 3 surgeries on my back. The surgeries were successful and i'm physically stronger than i've been in a long time.

However, after my last surgery i started feeling strange and it's been pretty scary for awhile. I was not feeling like myself. Mentally insecure is how I'd describe it. We're not sure what is causing it but i do know that it's not good for me to be on the road right now so I'm heading back to Los Angeles.

I had every intention to do these shows and was excited to get back to performing. I've been in the studio recording and rehearsing with my band and have been feeling better. But then it crept back and I've been struggling with stuff in my head and saying things I don't mean and I don't know why. Its something i've never dealt with before and we cant quite figure it out just yet.

I'm going to rest, recover and work with my doctors on this.

I'm looking forward to my recovery and seeing everyone later in the year.

The music and my fans keep me going and I know this will be something I can AGAIN overcome.

    Love & Mercy,

    Brian Wilson

This thing has pretty much destroyed my productivity today. I find myself sucked in to the reviews of the really bad songs, and I've realized 1974 Top 40 was just chock full of really bad stuff. "Seasons in the Sun." "Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia." "The Streak." The embarrassment that is Chuck Berry's only No. 1. All of those awful Cher story songs. And the reviews are all well-written -- better written than the songs are.

I've been hooked on the site Willets shared, where the guy is reviewing every No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart. It's usually a really good read, and he gets into the history of the artist.

But today? Knife in the heart! "Love Will Keep Us Together" was the first 45 I ever bought with my own money. (Hey, I was 11.)

    [url]https://www.stereogum.com/2051660/the-number-ones-the-captain-tennilles-love-will-keep-us-together/franchises/the-number-ones/

    Here's a snippet:

Some things just don't translate. Up until now, I have written more than 350 Number Ones columns, and all of them have been about songs that came out before I was born. In most of these cases, whether or not I like the tracks, I can at least piece together some idea of why these songs managed to resonate the way they did. I can find the appeal, or I can locate them within their eras' musical trends. It's usually not that mysterious. But with “Love Will Keep Us Together,” I'm just utterly at sea. This one baffles me. People really thought this shit was cool?
