Re: Suck it Duke

The way St. John's looked against DePaul the other day, I'm in no mood to laugh at other teams' misfortunes.

I think it's great that St. John's is good again. I'd love to see it continue.

Syracuse lost to Georgia Tech at home Saturday. They also lost to Old Dominion in December. So while beating Duke was nice...

I wonder about college basketball as a whole. With all these one and dones, all the top recruits are flocking to Duke and Kentucky, which means they have these super teams every season. They lose them all to the NBA, then start again. Plus this Adidas scandal, the whole myth of amateurism. I wonder if a generation from now whether anyone will pay attention to college sports.

If they had a two year requirement, you'd give them the pretension of an associates degree, plus the experience of gelling and returning for a second season at that level. I think it'd make a huge difference. But it won't happen.

How about that 80 footer to beat the buzzer though? Damn.

I think the one and done rule is over next year, which should benefit everyone (except for the unpaid student athletes). Kids out of high school can get paid in the NBA if they're good enough. If they don't get drafted, they can go back to college. And the universities can build programs again.

Re: Suck it Duke

what they SHOULD do is let kids go to the NBA (or if they aren't ready get drafted and spend a year in the NBA's developmental league or draft-and-follow while they get paid to play overseas using Europe as a minor league).

But for those who dont choose that route, 2 year commitment to NCAA for the good of the game.

and yeah, let kids go back to college if they dont get drafted as long as they havent gotten paid

Re: Suck it Duke

Or, if the colleges want players who are likely to stick around for longer than just pieces of two semesters, they could recruit their players from among

those who are **wait for it** actually interested in being college students!! Until then, I don't want to hear their sobbing.

The one-and-done rule is likely gone in the next year or two and its existence is totally the doing of the NBA, not the NCAA. But that doesn't mean the colleges have anyone to blame but

themselves when players who have no interest in the campus other than the part covered in hardwood wind up leaving the school 20 minutes after the final buzzer of their last game.

If I were Zion, and I saw my face on banners and billboards all over town, in advertisements to sell tickets, my jersey number in the team shop and my "likeness" in a video game, I wouldn't even wait that 20 minutes after the final buzzer to leave school since I wouldn't see a penny of that $$.

Re: Suck it Duke

well, if it were me i'd skip the college BS and go get paid to play in Spain or something. its not the most common route but it is happening more

Re: Suck it Duke

Well the NBA, starting next season I believe, will open up their [CROSSOUT]D[/CROSSOUT] G-League for HS grads so certain players can actually get paid for their talents without the risk of diving head first into the top league and without having to temporarily adopt a foreign country/language/culture at age 17/18 just to avoid the phony student option. Naturally salaries will be set rather than negotiable and there are restrictions on who qualifies so it won't nearly be a true open system, but at least an alternative path will exist that doesn't require crossing oceans.
