Veteran guitar band Jellybricks does some fine Matthew Sweet-ish distorted power pop with their nu tune, "Brooklyn."

Over the weekend I came across (not literally) a new rekkid by Scottish singer Steve Mason. It's loaded with these big-ass choruses and a little horny:

The album evokes late-period Pink Floyd to me, a vocal similarity more than anything.

This one goes out to some of the Daves I know.

A song from the point of view of a 32-year-old man who is dating a 19-year-old girl in 1980 gains a little ... I won't say "poignancy," but something akin to that ... when the original recording is synched (pretty impressively) to a performance of that same man singing the song several decades later.

Either it's due to some recent meeting you may have had with 'retha Franklin, or it was planted in your head via one or more of the 37 or so different threads on the main page which have the phrase 'Hey Nineteen' in their subject heading.

I'm betting on the second, but yaneverknow.

It's a bit weird in that Fagen toured for years as a solo act legally unable to bill himself as 'Steely Dan' - all while complaining to his management that he didn't have the same hotels, transportation, etc. as he did back in the 'Dan' days. "You want better accommodations?", his manager would say to him, "then get back together with Walter and tour as SD"! He could get the act much more $$ just based on the name alone.

But when Becker died Fagen claimed that the two had previously willed the name to each other (although Becker's family disputes this) so that now that it's impossible for SD to get back together, Fagen is free to call himself that.

May I recommend the latest from one of my favorite bands, Switchfoot. Here's the title cut from their new CD "Native Tongue."

Some of the lyrics I find speaking to me:

"Back before we learned the words to start a fight

Back before they told us that the haters were right

He spoke the truth, "let there be" and there was

Love is the language, love is your native tongue"

"My friend, where did we go wrong?

My Lord, we forgot our sound

My soul, such a long way from

My lips, my lungs, my native tongue"

"So sing it loud, get loud,

Louder than the voices in the crowd,

Even when they tried to drown you out,

Your lips, your lungs, your native tongue

So sing it out, get loud"

"Louder than the darkness and the doubts,

Louder than the curses and the shouts,

Your lips, your lungs, your native tongue"

"I want the world to sing in her native tongue

To sing it like when we were young

Back before the pendulum had swung to the shadows"

"I want the world to sing in her native tongue

Maybe we could learn to sing along

To find a way to use our lungs for love and not the shadows"

Re: Songs That Will Make Your Life Better in 2019

Yeah, because anyone who's right is a hater. But bring on the love. So much love for racism. And for voter suppression. And the love for kidnapping and hiding babies from mothers who are seeking asylum legally. And the love for taking health insurance away from millions who are guaranteed to die within a year or two without their insurance. And then the love for eliminating Medicare and social security because Betsy DeVos needs more tax cuts that benefit nobody but herself. And then we'll cover up all this scumbaggerry in some trite lightweight pop song by some crackpots who think there's an invisible man in the sky who controls everything. Let's exploit everyone who's dumb enough to believe all of this because if you say love and jesus enough times, you can scam some people out of their last cheez doodle.

This one came out last year, but it's been back in heavy rotation. "Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)" has the strangest title for a DMB song, but it really is a great tune. "Samurai Cop" is a gloriously bad movie, watchable only if you have the RiffTrax version! Apparently the band was watching it when working on the song. Here's a live version.

Was thinking about this song today. Had a little bumpy patch at work and someone really had my back. Dialed it up on the iPod and cranked it up while driving back from a meeting.

The Elms were one of those bands that had some minor success, got signed to a larger label, had one release then departed. But I love their stuff. This version of "Lifeboat" is from an independent EP, a little more raw than the version that followed. One of my all-time faves because I associate it with some special people.

Enjoy!

When I am scared, You are my Father

When I can't breathe, You are the air

When I can't swim, You are a lifeboat

When I'm tired and weary, You are there

And my times get high, my times get low

You always let me in on all that You know

I could give You time alone and then

You'd only come and ask me, "Where have you been?"

When I am weak, You are my shoulders

When I'm poor, You give me a hand

When I can't swim, You are my lifeboat

You carry me to dry land

When I'm not sure, You are my maker

Speaking words that keep me aware

When I can't swim, You are a lifeboat

When I'm tired and weary, You are there

Slow down you crazy child

You're so ambitious for a juvenile

But then if you're so smart tell me,

Why are you still so afraid? (mmmmm)

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?

You better cool it off before you burn it out

You got so much to do and only

So many hours in a day (Ay)

But you know that when the truth is told

That you can get what you want

Or you can just get old

You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through (Oooh)

When will you realize... Vienna waits for you?

Slow down you're doing fine

You can't be everything you want to be before your time

Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight (tonight)

Too bad, but it's the life you lead

You're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need

Though you can see when you're wrong

You know you can't always see when you're right (you're right)

You got your passion, you got your pride

But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?

Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true (Oooh)

When will you realize... Vienna waits for you?

Slow down you crazy child

Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while

It's alright, you can afford to lose a day or two (oooh)

When will you realize... Vienna waits for you?

And you know that when the truth is told

That you can get what you want or you can just get old

You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through (oooh)

Why don't you realize... Vienna waits for you?

When will you realize... Vienna waits for you?

This song's from 1980 and you may know it already but it's one of those that deserves a step back to admire for what a whacky bombastic thing it is, the lengthy intro, the gigantic hooks, the drumming, the insane harmonies, the lyrics:

Now loneliness is there despite the love we make

And loneliness knows where to find the friends we make

And the place we live is just a new street number

It also sounds like Eddie Munny on lead vocals. I remember nothing at all about this band or this song but I recognize the hooks.

Production-wise, it reminds me of Jeff Lynne's early productions with Dave Edmunds, with shamelessly glittering synth glissandos poured over the top of traditional rock 'n' roll guitar twangs. Except, you're right in how over-the top it is, proudly lacking all of Lynne's compactness.

Re: Songs That Will Make Your Life Better in 2019

The Motors were an offshoot of the English pub-rockers Ducks Deluxe, so the Dave Edmunds comparison isn't off. In fact, Rockpile's Terry Williams plays drums on this track. The band originally included Bram Tchiachovsky but by the time this album came out, the two synth-playing singers up front were the only original guys left, and they never made a record after this one. They were definitely trying to update the pub-rock sound for the new wave and I very well remember the "modern" looking TENEMENT STEPS album cover which you could also look at upside-down.

Been relying more on Spotify since my new car doesn't have an AUX port and my iPod Classic doesn't have Bluetooth. Was making a playlist of my all-time favorite songs added Relient K's "The Lining is Silver."

Perfect song at the perfect time, as it's been a frustrating week -- well, couple of weeks -- with some of the people who work for me. Relient K reminds us to focus on the good things in people.

Bird and the Bee Sides is a quirky compilation of B-sides and other tracks from the vault. Some great cuts on there, but this one jumped out at me then and has always spoken to me.

I found my new black shoes

While cleaning out the bones left in my closet

They were there with a bad excuse

Bon Voyage

And I found a backup plan

I'm grateful that I didn't have to use it

But it's made of real good friends

Bon Voyage

[Chorus]

Isn't it nice to know

That the lining is silver

Isn't it nice to know

That we're golden

Well I found a list of flaws

That I saw in myself and other people

And I threw it away because...

Bon Voyage

Isn't it nice to know

That the lining is silver

Isn't it nice to know

That we're golden

Isn't it nice to know (Isn't it nice to know)

That the lining is silver

Isn't it nice to know (Isn't it nice to know)

That we're golden

Yeah we're golden Oh-oh
