I still think it's funny that people thought they were too old to tour when Steel Wheels came out -- thirty years ago.

That was the tour I saw them on, sat in short left/center field at Shea. Still my only time ever on the field. October, 1989. I was 16 years old. At the time, they seemed young and vital to me. They were all around the same age that I am now, in their mid 40s.

I go super deep on the Stones and tend to best prefer those songs that don't get a ton of airplay. Like this one.

Re: What Gets Yer Ya-Ya's Out?

That tour was a really interesting time in New York. They had so many dates at Shea — two in early October and four more in late October — it was sort of seen as a residency, like the city was claiming London's most famous band as their own. It was like the only thing anybody talked about. And because there were so many dates, really anybody who hoped to go could score a ticket.

In between, they had a four-date run in LA which not only had a killer undercard — Living Color and Guns 'n' Roses — it had a lot of publicity-grabbing drama. And little of it had anything to do with the Stones. First, G 'n' R had an internecine battle on stage, with Axl letting the audience know how tired he was of Slash showing up doped out. Second was the simmering issue with Axl's use of the N-word in "One in a Million," which he felt a need to contextualize and defend every night before singing the song, while Living Color's Vernon Reid, head of the Black Rock Coalition, felt compelled to speak out against this same song during his band's set.

At the end of the tour, bassist Bill Wyman took his money and headed off to retire with his child bride. Darryl Jones has been touring and recording with the band as bassist ever since, but has never been named an official member of the group, which has always felt kind of icky.

Mick Taylor at the Garden going solo on Midnight Rambler. Might have been good enough to get him canned
