Hey Nineteen: Pete(r) Alonso!

Edgy MD
Feb 10 2019 08:07 PM

Hi, I'm not only considered by consensus to be one of the Mets' two hottest prospects, I'm easily the closer to majors of the two. I think I led the minors in homers last year. And that's a cool feather to add to your cap when you're so young.

People may think that I just broke through last year, but I'm 24, I've had three years in the minors playing for five different teams, and I've slugged between .550 and .600 everywhere I go. Maybe I'm good at this game. Maybe the Mets need to find out how good. What do you think?

Re: Nineteen Notions: Peter Alonso

Stick him at first base and leave him there - for 15 years.

Make Dominic Smith a distant memory - the answer to a far future trivia question.

Re: Hey Nineteen: Peter Alonso!

He's one of the intriguing questions at this point. I think Frazier starts the year at first base, but how long he lasts there will depend on both Frazier's performance and Alonso's. And if Alonso ends up displacing Frazier (and I suspect he will, but maybe not immediately) will that be from the lineup? Or from the roster?

Re: Hey Nineteen: Peter Alonso!

Yes, he's promising. He could be the best home-grown hitter we've developed since Wright. But he has no glove, no speed, and has a lot of swing-and-miss in his game, so he could also end up as a RHed Lucas Duda, but without the walks. Not to say he shouldn't be given a shot, but I remain cautious.

Re: Hey Nineteen: Peter Alonso!

His minor league tenure is comparable to Paul Goldschmidt's -- including significant concerns about his defense. Goldschmidt jumped AAA and hit .250/.333/.474 in 177 ABs, before following it with .286/.359/.490 line in his first full season. I'll go in between those numbers: .268/.346/.482 in 500 ABs, with 20 HR and 70 RBI.

He is now, but most definitely wasn't then. And the -6 runs saved in his first 300 innings didn't help. The fact that he is now regarded as a well above-average first baseman is grounds for optimism with Alonso, although he still has to go out there and do it.

Re: Hey Nineteen: Peter Alonso!

I want to say he'll be the 2019 ROY winner, but you just can't predict baseball, as they say. I think he'll get every chance to succeed, and he'll probably whack two dozen homers and play an adequate first base, before delivering a clutch game-winning triple in a late September game against the Marlins that makes everyone realize that you know what, he's quietly had a really great season and he *should* be the 2019 ROY winner after all.

His minor league tenure is comparable to Paul Goldschmidt's --

I hadn't thought of comparing those two.

PG (in the minors) = .317/.407/.620 over 1,387 PA

PA = .290/.381/.560 over 1,202 - so that's a virtually identical walk rate with a higher BA and power going to Goldschmidt although in western minor league locations so quite possibly under better hitting conditions

Goldschmidt came up with slightly more seasoning although Alonso already has more AB in upper minors (AA & AAA) and the two had both been college players and were playing their minor lg seasons at the same ages.

Goldschmidt seems to have been a bit of a late bloomer after being an 8th round pick from a lesser college program (Texas State) as compared to 2nd round and U of Florida

I guess we'll find out what kind of a bloomer Alonso is.

It looks like you'll have to change the name of this thread!

I remember noticing when I was a kid that athletes were always known by a diminutive version of their first name, but politicians always used their full first name. It seems to have started to switch around the time of Jimmy Carter and Richard Todd.

Now, it's the other way around. If Michael Conforto was running for office, he'd be Mike Conforto, and if Mike Pence were a ballplayer he'd be Michael Pence.

Pete Alonso is trying to reverse the trend. Or else, he's planning on running for Senator some day.

To me, Peter Alonso fits/ sounds better than Pete Alonso.

My wife heard this on the radio and asked why anyone should make a big fuss about this or even care.

I tried to explain that this is important because we're talking about a player on my favorite team, to no avail.

Anyone who wants to come over to my house and explain to my wife why this is a matter worthy of discussion is more than welcome.

Re: Hey Nineteen: Pete(r) Alonso!

Nah, I'm good if they hit opening day with Smith at first base. He's earned something this spring too. Alonso gets the vote of confidence of making the opening day roster, Smitty gets the vote of confidence in getting the opening day start. Wins all around.

Alonso can soak it all in and start in game two. Nobody's going to get rusty if they each start six games in 10, with outfield appearances by Smitty and DH opportunities allowing them both that much time, along with pinch hitting and defensive subbing the other four days.

As injuries and performance indicate, their roles will expand or contract.

Hooray for everybody, you know?

And if Alonso is struggling in May, for example, they can send him to Syracuse for two weeks to get himself right, and they'd also get that service time bonus that they would have had if he didn't go north with the club. This isn't a prediction, just a possibility.

Re: Hey Nineteen: Pete(r) Alonso!

what's with the "batting 2nd" thing?

I mean, i'm not big on batting order, beyond giving your best hitters the most ABs, but Pete is a RHed moose, with a lot of swing and miss in his game. That's like the complete OPPOSITE of what a #2 hitter usually looks like --LHed to block the catcher's view and throw, patient with good bat control, to hit&run or move leadoff hitter over or let him steal, and fast to stay out of DPs and score from 1st on xtra base hits by the middle of the order-- otherwise known as McNeil. And its not like Pete's PROVEN he's one of the team's best hitters, deserving of more ABs than McNeil (for example). Is breaking up the lineup with alternating LH/RH hitters more important than than putting the best guys in the best slots? Even with the "3-hitter rule" making that strategy less important?

I don't know. I'm just asking. I mean, i won't lose sleep over it, but is this Calloway trying to look like he understands analytics?

Keith himself acknowledged that it's was dubious stat even while he was in the midst of leading the sport in them; that by being on a good team with a pitching staff that rarely gave up early leads his 'Game Winners'

were often nothing more than 1st inning singles or Sac Flies which brought in a scampering Mookie or Wally. The whole invention of the stat was pretty much a misguided attempt to measure 'clutch' and the folks

that created them realized as much early on leading to its quick de-officialized status.

Kevin Armstrong offers 20 facts about Pete Alonso in the Times. No. 5 is kind of unfortunate.

5. He is a former Yankee. Alonso was raised in a house five miles from George M. Steinbrenner Field and played for the Yankees in the Tampa Bay Little League with Steinbrenner's grandson, Joe.

After he won a title in 2002 at age 7, Alonso received a letter from the former Yankees manager Joe Torre congratulating Alonso for “upholding the reputation of our team.” Alonso framed it and hung it on his bedroom wall.

NL Rookie of the Year

1. Pete Alonso, Mets

2. Mike Soroka, Braves

3. Fernando Tatis Jr., Padres

Tatis moves down as Soroka continues his pretty incredible run atop the Braves rotation. The second-best ERA in the National League, a top-five WAR among NL pitchers and his importance to a team running away with its division all combine to move him ahead of the phenom who won't play again this season. Alonso is winning this award, though, as we've said through nearly every update.

The young slugger leads the baseball in home runs, along with a top five offensive WAR and top seven OPS in the National League. Even as a first baseman, he's just barely outside the top 10 in overall WAR in the NL. With Tatis down for the count, Alonso is a stone cold lock. The rest is just window dressing.

Voters are polled every week. Alonso's pulled away in these polls only very recently. Soroka was a Cy Young candidate for most of the season. BTW, this piece has Jake deGrom winning the Cy.
