There are a lot of roles for a manager: advancing a philosophy, setting policy, getting everybody rowing in the same direction, recognizing talent, coordinating good coaching, lifting up the broken players, taking down the arrogant ones, putting players in a position to succeed, making long-term lineup commitments, executing in-game strategy, acting as an accountable face and mouthpiece before and after games, etc.

But the success or lack-thereof isn't equally apparent in all of these important areas, but reveals itself more in these last few. And by that measure, I, frankly ... didn't prosper.

I mean, nobody denies that I appear to be a smart guy. A positive, forward-thinking and confident guy. But the proof is in the pudding. The proof is in the punch. And not a lot of folks went all that crazy for 2018 Mets pudding. 2018 Mets punch.

I don't know if you're entitled to a mulligan in your first year. There's too much invested to give a guy an outright pass. But lets agree that freshmen get a little bit longer a leash. Well, I'm not a freshman any longer. Beyond that, the GM that hired me is gone. And the new guy has demonstrated no particular need to redeem his predecessor's decisions.

I'm on my own this year. How's it gonna play out?

With a year under his belt and Jim Riggleman as a mentor, the deep end of the pool won't seem as scary. He'll have this season to prove himself and will do fine.

Re: Hey, Nineteen: Mickey Callaway

That would be a pretty bold move with the Mets 12 games in front.

I hope they have a camera on the dugout to capture Riggleman giving Mickey a Gibbs-type head slap when he tries to do one of his 2018-type moves.

Mick really disappointed me last season, but I'll give him a Mulligan. I would say he is vulnerable if things don't work out and things might not work out.

He's in a tough spot. He may be in a position where he'll get none of the credit if the Mets succeed and all of the blame if they don't. He managed like a rookie at times last year, but the Mets pitching staff (especially the rotation) ended the season in far better shape than it started. Hopefully that continues.

Yup. It's going to be hard not to give it to him when the team wins 95 games.

His beard fills in a bit. Jim Riggleman reminds him there's no DH yet. Puts on a few pounds and resolves to take them off in the next off-season. Calls the homeowner's association to get rid of that pesky alligator in his backyard.

Will rise and fall on the relative health and skill of his players.
