Recused from Recusal

In an otherwise nothing-new-to-see-here article about signing Jacob deGrom to an extension, Joel Sherman writes that Brodie Van Wangenen no longer has to recuse himself from negotiations involving his former client. Now that deGrom has been signed for 2017, BVW's recusal period with regard to him is effectively over, and he's free to speak for the team with regards to all future deals. That's coming from the union. Weird.

No matter what I and/or the Mets think about BVW, you'd figure the union almost has an obligation to treat him as an apostate, to make it hard for him to do his job, to protect his former clients, to protect proprietary information that he left with, and to make it clear to all the other agents "You're our boys, we love you, and intend to make you rich, but don't even think about crossing to the other side of the table." The union hasn't shown a lot of their old strong-arm power in the Tony Clark era.

maybe they think BVW will be a net benefit for the players in shaking loose more change from Wilpon's pocket compared to Sandy who was on-board with a cautious approach?

DeGrom's CAA agent, Jeff Berry, recently released a memo that outlined recourse for players who seek reform in free agency, following two historically slow markets. Among the ideas suggested by Berry was that pitchers could look to cap their workloads in a season to ensure their value remains at a higher level heading to free agency. And a source indicated deGrom could put such restrictions on himself if a new deal isn't reached with the Mets. If a deal is reached, deGrom went on to say, "I'll be all like, 'Fuck this! I got guaranteed money in the bank!' I'll be sure to take less care of my body and in fact engage in risky behavior that will endanger my arm such as ax-catching events and starting both ends of a doubleheader."

I am not surprised - the whole recusal thing was iffy from the start. If a GM leaves one team for another, does he have to recuse himself from dealing with his former team because of the confidential information he shirley possesses on all of their organization and their business practices? It is time to move on and judge BV dubbs solely on his performance as GM.

Moving from one billion dollar organization to another is not the same as working against an individual to which you had a fiduciary duty three months ago. Boras was absolutely right. How can any player have confidence in CAA if their agents could potentially end up sitting across from you as you negotiate the one big contract you've been building your whole life to get? I don't know what ethics apply here, but if Brodie had an ounce of integrity, he'd step aside, whether he was allowed to participate or not. The ultimate power move would be for Jake to go public. "I don't see the point of negotiations. Brodie was my agent. He knows what my bottom line is. Either he offers it or not."

deGrom just signed a new contract for 2019 with an agent that was not Brodie Van Wagenen.
