My hope was that both Manny and Harper would sign with teams outside of the NL East* and the Bronx.

One down, one to go.

*Mets excepted, of course.

Has anyone seen the terms yet?

EDIT: 10 years / $300M per MLBTR

26-year old superstar, Wil Myers, Eric Hosmer, bunch of young studs and one of the top farms overall... this team needs some SP's

They were very interested in Syndergaard, as I recall, but didn't want to give up Fernando Tatis Jr.

Re: Manny to Padres

The Pads could certainly use one Mr. Todd Frazier in their current lineup. WATP alert: I propose we send Frazier (makes $9M) + Matz ($2.6M) for #11 prospect Stormy Weathers Junior and #23 ranked, 3b prospect Hudson Potts (cause I like his cool name).

Then we go and sign Dallas Keuchel to slot in behind Wheeler, using most of those Frazier buxxx. JD Davis (then Alonso) gets most of those Frazier AB's and a fierce battle-to-the-death ensues for that 25th roster spot.

That's not a bad plan then again I'm in favor of most trade-Matz scenarios

Someone else just tweeted that when Manny's SD contract is up, he'll be younger than Cano is right now.

A giant missed opportunity for the Mets.

And there will be another one in a few days when Harper signs with the Phillies. That one will sting even more, if it comes to pass.

With Hosmer's contract entrenched at 1B, Myers contract is forced to RF - that leaves only CF/LF for Margot, Reyes, Renfroe - i doubt they are really in on Harper.

Re: Manny to Padres

Isn't Petco an extreme pitcher's park? I can't see Machado doing that well there. And if he wasn't motivated to hustle in a World Series....

Meanwhile, I can see Harper hitting 60 home runs in that Philly bandbox.

Re: Manny to Padres

Less extreme since the fences moved in, but not friendly either. The park will look a lot friendlier when some of those prospects start to graduate though. The Padres will be the team to beat in the NL in two years, tops.

I like Seo's plan too, but I can't see the Padres liking it all that much.

The Phillies and White Sox have been doing all this posturing all offseason long, and at least one of them will walk away empty-handed.

If Machado doesn't start out at third for the Padres, he will move there as soon as Tatis is ready. So position ultimately had nothing to do with where he signed.

Re: Manny to Padres

The White Sox offer reportedly had a bunch of incentives attached which made the guarantee less than $300M but could have pushed it higher depending on how manny thresholds Many hit

... but apparently he wanted the guarantees more which is basically what he said he wanted heading into the off-season.

The Sox thought they were holding the winning hand.

As far as the park, yeah it's not as extreme as it was but you could still see it costing him some HRs.

I wonder if he'll get mad, a la DiMaggio, if he gets robbed of one and, if that happens, you wonder if there'll be a similar iconic moment of him kicking the dirt some 15 ft from the plate.

White Sox brought in Manny's brother-in-law and his workout buddy. I guess they can always text.

don't understand why a team would expect an incentives-laden contract to entice a guy who gave an interview in the postseason where he said he doesnt hustle

Re: Manny to Padres

I think the incentives were more availability-based towards the back-end than they were performance clauses which are restricted in contracts.

Apparently the first eight years were locked in but years nine and ten were club options or could kick in depending on GP, ABs, PAs or whatever.

So the ChiSox deal was one with a lower floor (~$250) but also a higher ceiling ($320+) than was the route SD took with the straight 10/300

Nope. Nor did the landing place of his brother-in-law.

I like when the "poor" get "richer," and it isn't just draft-enabled.

Could very well be that Tatis makes the move to third, no? As a matter of fact, given the parties involved... that seems more likely than the other way.

Good god, talk about living in the past...I almost texted my son about this. He was a big Manny Ramirez fan.

Brain fart.

Senior moment.

Whatever.

Glad I didn't...I'd never live it down, lolol
