Random Facts - 2019

Bangladesh has roughly half the population of the United States [166 mil vs 328] and yet they stuff them all into a country slightly smaller in area than the state of Georgia.

Except for a few city-states plus a handful of small islands, Bangladesh is the more densely populated nation on the planet and it's not even close.

And they are now the host nation for one of the most desperate refugee populations on Earth.

For much of my life, the word "Bangladesh" was almost synonymous with an unfortunate, malnourished, destitute people. To think that over 650,000 people have become so desperate that they are fleeing into Bangladesh is stunning.

How is this thread different from the "Things I Did Not Know" or the "Apropos of Nothing" threads?

Wikipedia says Monaco would like to differ, as would Singapore, Vatican City, Bahrain, Malta, and the Maldives.

(The scope, obviously, of Bangladesh is quite different; it has way more people AND more acreage than any of those.)

I already did know it, and it's a fact which tend to be apropos of something.

Emphasis added for emphasis.

Sorry, sir.

The big "E" just lit up on the Schaeffer scoreboard.

The committee has identified this as a sly attempt to evade the clause in our hallowed RMPL rule concerning the starting of new threads.

You will be severely chastised.

There are two rules about starting new threads at the CPF

Rule 1 -- There are no rules

Rule 2 -- See Rule 1

If you're scoring at home, Schaefer only has one 'f'.

(and if you're scoring at home, what are you doing reading a baseball forum?)

MFS's wife isn't the one that can go on for hours. At least not that he's mentioned....

Re: Random Facts - 2019

Seven years ago, Jimmy Carter set the record for being ex-President the longest, surpassing previous record holder Herbert Hoover.

Carter is also the only Prez to live until the 40th anniversary of his inauguration (now 42 years, two months) and has been out of office for more than 38 years.

But never one to be satisfied with his already existing records, as of today he now becomes the longest-lived U.S. President ever.

Born 110 days after George H. W. Bush [10/1/1924 vs 6/12/24] the 94-1/2 y/o Carter has now out-lived GHWB by 111 days.

And he's still eligible for another 4-year term.

Actor James Cromwell is 6' 6-3/4" (knew he was tall, had no idea he was that tall) making him the tallest actor ever to receive an Oscar nomination [Supporting actor in BABE]

Tim Robbins [6' 5" -- Supporting Actor, MYSTIC RIVER] is the tallest Oscar winner ever.

Re: Random Facts - 2019

When Decca famously rejected the Beatles, they chose to sign another act -- Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. The group had its first hit with a version of "Twist and Shout." After Poole left, the Tremeloes continued as a moderately successful rock act.

One reason why they were chosen was that they were based in London, not Liverpool and the record company could see the act without making an overnight trip.
