I don't know if this is better off for the Politics thread, but it's kind of a tangent and I try not to wade into those waters if I can avoid it.

Saw this cool article about the evolution of presidential campaign graphics. I collect presidential campaign memorabilia, so I'm really into this stuff. But I thought the evolution of the design is really neat. And as the fields get more and more crowded, candidates will need to so something more than the traditional rad, white and blue to stand out.

I thought Obama's 2008 O logo was a game-changer, but apparently candidates are going back to words over images.

Lotta red, white and blue there. I've always been enchanted by Carter's use of green. Really stood out then and now.

Sure does. And a good call, as he was a farmer. My former boss used green and blue for his colors, which really popped.

I always liked Gore-Leiberman's graphics, which presented a challenge due to the shortness of his name and the length of his running mate's. The shooting star was a good call to span the gap and bring it all together. I also liked McCain's logo, which called out to his military experience without hitting you over the head with it.

I didn't like Hillary's design at all. It just doesn't tell me anything. Nor was I enamored of Romney's logo. The R just doesn't seem to work.

Re: Presidential graphics

HHH was delightfully cheeky. Glad AOC is bringing initials back to politics.

That ampersand between Reagan and Bush is unique, like you're getting each, not both. Maybe the concept was left over from the Reagan & Ford co-presidency negotiations.

The alignment of "entsen" at the top of the "B" struck me as weird thirty-plus years ago and still does.

Re: Presidential graphics

Dukakis/Bentsen is the failure among failures, though.

Clinton/Kaine sort of underscored what was wrong with the secretary's campaign.

Romney/Ryan is interesting. It suggests two R's spooning one another, but only one R is missing from the regular type, so I guess it's one. The soft curves and the baby blue put me in mind of a women's health clinic. Or even moreso, a fertility clinic.

Ford/Dole seems to miss out on a lot of options with regard to how the two names could have capitalized on their similarities — same number of letters, almost the same number of picas, and the O in the same place. Dole/Kemp does a better job in that regard, but still not particularly memorable.

The star and the gold stripe in McCain/Palin seem to provide a subtle reference to McCain's military heroism, while the five stars in Trump/Pence provide an over-the-top reference to President Trump's military fetishism.

Here's one example of a Ford-Dole pin where they do something kind of fun with the names, noting that one ends on a D and the other starts on it. I've only found one example of this.

I guess they didn't want to mess with success.

Here's what the 2020 crop has produced so far. This was in the article, but I had trouble getting it to post the other day. Some of these people are too unknown to be trotting out logos with just their first name!

Yeah, I was looking at some of the rollouts.

Senator Elizabeth Warren boldly mixes serious New York Giants deep blue with Martha Stewart green. It's all business, but with a crafty flair.

Did someone say "crafty"? Senator Corey Booker says "Hold my beer," and then he comes back with letters that look like a fourth-grader cut them out in art class.

It doesn't look like there's any official merch for Mayor Pete Buttegeig yet. Sad.

Secretary Julian Castro may not support the border, but his campaign logos sure do:

https://ih1.redbubble.net/image.722649856.9915/stf,small,600x600-c,0,0,1000,1000.u1.jpg>

Representative John Delaney is a guy who will certainly have trouble standing out, but he's seemingly got President Obama's old designer working for him:

https://www.johnkdelaney.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Screen-Shot-2018-08-30-at-12.55.20-PM-250x200.png>

This font seems to have been effected with magic marker, with just a little sassy south seas flair. In fact, it looks like it's promoting a kinda disreputable and underfunded beauty contest.

https://ccisf.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/tulsi-logo.gif>

Going by logos, I'm throwing in with Rep. Delaney so far.

Not being a bumpersticker sort of guy, I will admit I don't pay much attention to logos. Reviewing these examples moved me to look up Barry's running mate, who I had completely forgotten about. These look pretty good over the years. And, that said, I had no idea what Mr. Obama's logo was until I found it decorating cupcakes in one of those quirky cupcake stores in the mall. I had to ask and got the fish eye over it. But - I voted for him twice in spite of not knowing what his "brand" ID looked like.

Nice effort from Joe Biden. Seems like a cross between the new type of graphic identities yet still reflecting some tradition. Kind of like his campaign overall, I suspect.

Pete's updated his look, by the way. His name sits in the shape of a bridge, which is a nod to a bridge he South Bend he apparently fancied up. The campaign apparently put all their logos up on their site for the public to use however they want.

Uh-oh. Pete used a University of Michigan color scheme for our state. There are as many, if not more, MSU fans and it's a huge, nasty rivalry. But otherwise a pretty cool idea.

Meanwhile, here's Seth's design.

The New York logo is very road-jersey Metly.

Looking more closely, it seems a 50/50 pander. Yankee colors, Met font. Disappointed in you, Pete.

Re: Presidential graphics

I like the Buttigieg and Warren logos best. Simple and non-traditional, but effective for me.

Biden and Bernie look dated and many of the others seem stock. Harris's reminds me of a partial map of the US, including the west coast but missing New England, Florida and southern Texas.

Man, the Inslee logo is crap. It looks like a tech company logo that went out of business in 1998.

Here's an interesting Presidential graphic:

Apparently they didn't notice when Trump was giving his "I can do anything I want" speech to a bunch of MAGA Youth this week, but the Presidential Seal they were projecting behind him had a two-headed eagle (Russian symbol) and the eagle was clutching golf clubs and cash in its talons....

It says “45 es un titere,” Spanish for “45 is a puppet.”

There are also tiny hammers and sickles in the eagle's shield.
