Turns out Ryan Adams is not just an asshole, but a gross asshole, too.

So glad my walls are adorned with a bunch of his framed concert posters and my records shelves full of this guy's shit.

I never trusted that guy. He was what, 10 years old during the summer of '69? Freakin' liar.

Wait who? Ryan Adams?

I got nothing.

Yeah I don't know who that is. I'm blissfully ignorant of pop stars these days, I think it explains my overall satisfaction with life.

People used to fuck with him, request that song at his shows, and he would famously lose his shit over it. I guess it's not surprising that a guy who has unabashedly been a jerk his whole career (and maybe his whole life) would not also be a creepy, manipulative jerk with women, too, but I guess I was a fan boi pollyanna. Time to redecorate my walls anyway.

You probably know him even if you think you don't. "New York, New York" was a smash hit for him in 2001 off of Gold. He's put out a ton of records, received plenty of critical acclaim, and famously feuded with other musicians (the Strokes, Old 97s) and journalists along the way. Also, he's gross.

Re: #metoo

I remember liking the song "New York" and getting that CD, looking in the inside booklet and finding multiple pictures that included a gun, and thinking, "he's a jerk." And it's not like I don't have plenty of music from jerks in my collection, but most of them are either not so jerky as to turn me off completely, indispensable enough that I would cut them slack, and/or not so seemingly proud of the jerky side of their personality. Adams fit none of the above categories.

I liked “New York, New York” and some of the songs when he completely covered Taylor Swift's 1989. But he sure did come off like a jerk.

Same here. Until I followed the link, I was thinking about Bryan Adams. I don't remember ever hearing that song.

Re: #metoo

My beef with Bryan Adams started with that Robin Hood soundtrack ballad, way before Ryan was a known dickhead.

I just canceled my (green vinyl!) pre-order of Ryan's new record. None of this is making me happy.

Already maxed out on NY Times articles for the month. Is it the same New York, New York?

Re: #metoo

No, it's different.

What was nauseating about that article was how consistent his behavior has been. And how consistent the wreckage was. Female after female either quit the business explicitly or, like his ex-wife, just fell away, losing their momentum, confidence, and creative spark.

Guy's always been a mental case and a dick. I learned that reading that book about him. The only thing you could say in his "defense" is that his abuse also extends at times to his non-young-female musicians, his crew and audiences too.

I don't know if that was a joke, but wrong guy! Poor Bryan Adams right now. Worst time to get conflated for another dude.

I flipped my pre-order $$ for that Ryan Adams record (which has since been shelved) over to Me Too Movement. They can better use that $30.

Yes, this. He generally acknowledges that he's a jerk, too, but that doesn't excuse any of this.

Official Statement from Bryan Adams:

I am deeply disappointed to hear about the allegations brought against Ryan Adams. I have known Ryan to be a talented musician and a gifted songwriter, but nothing can excuse the behavior of which he is accused. I hope that a full and thorough investigation will bring clarity to the situation, and I pray that his victims can recover and heal. Most importantly, I would like to stress that I am not him. I am a beloved Canadian singer-songwriter, producer, activist and philanthropist. Please don't mistake me for this douchebag. I'm not without faults, but pretty much my biggest fuckup was that Robin Hood song. I remain sorry about that. In the meantime, I hope we can all get past this. Rock on!

Wow, that worked out really well. Aging pop star. Goofy movie set in medieval times. You know what we should try for our next goofy movie set in medieval times? Three aging pop stars!

One of the many stories about what a penis the guy is comes from losing his shit when the Weisenheimers in the audience at his shows would shout out "Summer of 69!!!"

I believer he eventually slayed this dragon when he covered it but geez he easily could have changed his stage name to Adam Ryan, or Fester Adams or something.

I have enjoyed his music at points in the past, especially Heartbreaker. But it was tougher for me to make time for his music the more I heard about his douchebaggery.

Funny thing is, traditionally, these sorts of allegations have tended to raise the question of whether we can separate the art from the artist. What's been gratifying of late is that we seem to be moving away from that. I mean, at a certain point, why make that weighing when there are SO many others who make art/comedy/beloved sitcoms who don't destroy the lives of others in the offing? (Hell, one of his accusers, Phoebe Bridgers, is a crazy-talented singer-songwriter herself.)

I like this take. I've been (personally) sick that I've spent so much time and money on this dude, but I'm not trying to make excuses to I can still listen to the out-of-print copy of Jacksonville City Nights I just bought like 10 fuckin days ago. btw - if you guys know any dickheads and/or creeps looking for Ryan Adams vinyl, HMU

(and agreed, Phoebe is amazing. That boygenius EP last year was one of my favorite things and her new collab w/ Conor Oberst called Better Oblivion Community Center is super good. I just learned that she has a song she wrote about Ryan Adams that is worth a listen and lyric read-along).
