Yeah, I'm wondering how Nike is going to cover up the sweatshop originals of that shoe

Re: Nike Fail

On a related note, Williamson is now injured, though it does not appear to be serious.

Tickets were going for $4k prior to the game. Duke has a big sneaker contract with Nike, the schools get tremendous revenue from ESPN. National spotlight, celebs and ex-President sitting courtside, but the athletes get paid zero.

Amateurism.

Re: Nike Fail

Zion needs to cash in, get a sponsorship with a rival sneaker company and start making commercial "Don't get hurt by Nike like I did, wear Puma!"

Heck, he could probably get Nike to pay him NOT to make said commercials.

Re: Nike Fail

While I don't like to root for injuries, just the idea that this guy got hurt 30 seconds into a game where tickets were selling for thou$and$ a piece, partly because of the rivalry but mostly because of him,

all in front of a see-and-be-seen list of celebs, none of whom, to my knowledge, had any connection to either school (Obama, Floyd Mayweather, Griff Jr, others) but know a leaching opportunity when they see one,

tickles me to no end.

And that it all happened due to a blown-out sneaker that he was forced to wear because the company pays millions to his coach ... well that just makes it that much better.

Yeah, tell me again how much more pure the "amateur" game is than the professional version.

And the one part you're leaving out is that he was not allowed into the best professional league in the world, not because he wasn't good enough, but because that league has a deal with these academic institutions where they won't touch the best players for one year.

Re: Nike Fail

Yup! And the one thing that pisses off many college hoops [CROSSOUT]fans[/CROSSOUT] apologists about that one year rule is that it's not longer like it used to be in 'the good ol' days' when they were forced to be chattel for four years.

And when they couldn't transfer without sitting out; and where scholarships could be yanked away at any moment for any reason;

and where the coach could prevent them from transferring to particular schools for any or no reason including those who already graduated;

and where ...

... oh wait, everything after the four-year part is still true.

Re: Nike Fail

Nike stock lost approximately $1.4 billion in market capitalization today. That's one expensive sneaker.

Markets tend to be short-term irrational about this sort of stuff but then long-term rational so this likely won't be anything in a few days.

But considering what they charge for those things they pay $0.34/hour to make, it would be nice to see them sweat somewhere other than on the treadmill.

Not the first time this happened to them either. There was a track guy a bunch of years ago whose NIKE shoes fell apart mid-race.

I tend to avoid Nike gear simply because I don't want to look like a billboard and they have a habit of plastering their logo large and all over everything.

Not that other companies don't do the same, but Nike seemed to be firster, worser, and blatanter at it than most.

If they want me to do their advertising for them then they'll need to cough up some buxx. Until then, the plainer the shirt/sweatshirt/etc the better.

I believe any logo'd gear I currently have was stuff given to me.

For the last coupla years I've been exclusively buying FILA kicks, at first because they were cheaper than the others and now because they're cheaper AND I haven't had a pair I disliked yet.

You saw what coming? That Zion Williamson's Nike sneaker would self-explode because 30 years ago, Michael Jordan signed with Nike?

Re: Nike Fail

I used to work in the sneaker business. On a business trip in the 90's I went to a sneaker factory outside Jakarta, Indonesia. A huge factory in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by barbed wire and men with guns. They made shoes for a multitude of brands.

The workers had to work barefoot to prevent theft. While many parts of manufacturing a shoe are mechanized, a lot is hand-sewn. Imagine an aircraft hangar with rows of tables out of a 1910 sweatshop photo. Talking was not allowed. Hard to tell ages, but most looked pretty young. It's hot, with only ceiling fans to cool things. Next door was the rubber pressing operation for the soles. First the rubber is heated, handled in big vats by bare-chested men using giant wooden ladles. The stench is overwhelming, and it has to be at least 120 degrees. I start coughing after 15 seconds; these guys are there 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. If there's a hell, this is it.

At the end of the tour, the factory manager is beaming and asks me if I enjoyed it. I tell him it was 'very interesting' because I couldn't exactly say 'you're a monster'. I got out of there as fast as I could. But the memories linger.

I'm sure things have improved marginally since then. But every pair of shoes you wear regardless of what they are has probably been made under conditions we'd think are appalling.

Re: Nike Fail

So there was a half-page ad in the sports section of Sunday's NYT:

JUST BLEW IT was the headline.

Below that was a picture of a pair of sneakers, one of which had a side completely torn apart. The implication, of course, is that they're Nikes although no name or 'Swoosh' is visible

And below that was the line: Sketchers - We Won't Split on You

Kind of a bold move by Sketchers if they are made in the same sweatshop

Which of course he couldn't have done so as to not blow his "amateur" status.

Besides, you know how Zion cashes in?

'Hey Nike. Seeing as how I'm the face of college hoops this year and am on my way to being the #1 overall draft pick, I'm thinking those creds usually land a guy a pretty sweet sneaker deal, right? ... Now triple it and you won't see my face all over [fill-in competitor] ads for the next 15 years bashing your weak-ass shit!'

I said that higher up in the thread

He is currently hurt and would be the #1 pick if he lost his NCAA status tomorrow, he should "just do it!"
