Woodward and Castro playing means that Zambrano is the last Met who broke camp with the team to make his '06 debut.

Apr 08 2006 12:54 PM

Diaz batting 8th?

I thought if you have a good-hitting, poor fielding LFer, you tried to get him the most at bats before you take him out of the game for defense..

Elster88
Apr 08 2006 12:55 PM

Flip-flop him with Castro maybe, but I don't see where else to bat him.

No game? Shit, I structured my entire day around a three hour break right here. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I'll take whichever has the higher OBP second...I'm not sure who that is.

One rainout already. Key for the all-important tiebreaker in the Met Predictions.

Through 2005: Woodward .305 OBP, Diaz .329 OBP.

Of course Woodward does hold the huge advantage of playing 2b, a major consideration of WWSB's in making out the batting order.

Amazing how some managers insist on having a second baseman in the lineup.

which really does explain why hernandez has been batting in the 8th spot thus far.

Well, that's Willie's defense if anyone ever accuses him of being totally insane, but I was referencing his insistence on batting Cairo and Matsui second in the order last season. Those two, with atrocious OBPs and few other offensive virtues, batted second in the order in most of last season's games. I think most of us here saw that that wasn't working long before Willie did (if he ever did). When Kaz comes back, let's see if he bats him in the 2 hole or the 8 hole. I'm betting 2, I'm hoping 8.

What makes me somewhat optimistic that Kaz will bat 8 is Willie's stubbornness--he's committed publicly to batting Lo Duca 2 and it often takes quite a bit to move WWSB off his chosen policy.

Kaz Matsui
2005: 1st, 2 games. 2nd, 41 games. 8th, 20 games. 9th, 1 game.

Miguel Cairo
2005: 2nd, 55 games. 7th, 1 game. 8th, 25 games.

Looks like Bret is basically right. Cairo and Matsui each were in the 1 or 2 slot for a little over 2/3 of their starts.

If all of the starts in the eighth slot were at the end of the season, that would show Willie learned as the year went on. I don't know if that's the case; I remember Cameron starting in the two spot in the lineup for some time after he came back from his injury early in the season.

Great game. Willis & Glavine both looked pretty dominant tonight. Wright DID get a gift on that triple, but it likely would've been a RBI single regardless.

I caught that too! Maybe Keith is channeling Ralph Kiner!

Boy, did you see how hyped up Dontrelle Willis was during that Mets rally? He wanted to get out of that jam, and it seemed like he just couldn't wait to get the ball and pitch it again.

He's fun to watch, and so was this game. I again watched on TiVo-delay, and zipping through commercials it took only about two hours. (I started watching at about 2:15 and finished at about 4:15.)

Edgy DC
Apr 10 2006 09:45 AM

Yeah, Keith can tell you about baseball in the abstract inside and out, but I'm not sure he's up to the legwork to be able to tell you about the players actually out there on the field.

I was going to go to the home opener here in DC. We had a scheduling conflict, and instead I'll end up at game two when Pedro gets arrested.
