What's the MLB single season record? I was going to start a thread to track it, but figured I'd get yelled at for starting too early.
|
Edgy DC Apr 08 2006 12:33 AM |
The single-season record is 36, held by John Owen "Chief" Wilson.

I think this was one of the answers to my grilling at Cooperstown a few summers ago. It may have been the answer to the final question. Man, did Craig and Hook get raked in 1962? Two-thirds of the Met all-time top three in HRs given up from that first season.

IIRC, Craig gave up four of them to Roy Sievers of the Phillies. Two of them were the only runs he surrendered in 1-0 losses and the last one (toward the end of the season) was in extra innings. Youda' thought that a "veteran" like Craig would have known about pitching around a guy who killed him. Later

the only post-war season on the list, and Reyes has a shot at catching him. one of the consequences of tiny bandboxes, besides increased homeruns, is a decrease in triples because balls dont have as much room to bounce around anymore

I'll look into that and report on my next update (if someone doesn't beat me to it), but Reyes is halfway to Mookie in triples, and he's, like, nine years old. Seriously, he could well break a Mets all-time cumulative record at 24 or 25 years old. That's remarkable.

This is getting crazy. A few days playing on a rug and Jose has now tied for both the third tripliest season in Met history, and the third tripliest career in Met history. He started the season tenth on the team's all-time list and is now third, and is actually making a run for second.

Worth noting that Beltran has 94 runs batting in. Only 27 players in Mets history have finished with higher totals. Beltran, of course, has another 58 games left in his season, and projects to a season total of 146, which would smash the record of 124 that Mike Piazza set in 1999.

With two more homers, Jose Reyes breaks the Mets' record of homers by a shortstop, which would be lamentable only because it's a crown remakably co-held by two guys (Elster and Howard Johnson) setting the mark in the same season (1989).

This should have been noted at his last win, but Steve Trachsel is now one of the Mets top ten winningest pitchers. Not bad for a whipping boy whose career has largely coincided wtih a dip in the Mets' fortunes.

Even knowing that wins are a crappy statistic, and Traxxxx ranks in the top 10, overcoming that healthy gap (one very good season or two OK ones) between 10 and 8 is what future Met hurlers gotta do to be among the true category greats IMO.

Not only is the 'Best Bunter' title generous (Eckstein is MUCH better) but so is his inclusion on the best defensive list. I think he's got the potential to be there but he isn't yet. Everett better IMO, so is Jack Wilson and maybe some others.

Saves in a Metly Career
|
Yancy Street Gang Aug 27 2006 11:53 AM |
Beltran now has 108 RBI, which ties another former Mets record. (Darryl Strawberry in 1990. Edgardo Alfonzo also had 108 in 1999.)
|
Yancy Street Gang Aug 27 2006 11:58 AM |

I haven't made a table for this, because I didn't think it'd come to it, but Steve Trachsel is on a pace for 17.45 wins, which would be the 15th winningest season in Met pitching history, and the highest Met win total since Frank Viola won 20 in 1990.
|
Yancy Street Gang Aug 30 2006 01:09 PM |
Last night's home run by Beltran was only the fifth time a Met has had a (39) in a box score for home runs, and the first time it ever happened as early as August.

Been a while since I updated this. José has tied his career high (and the second-best tripling season ever), and is almost close enough to make a run at Mookie Wilson next year for the all-time team lead.
