BA: Righthander Mike Pelfrey’s professional debut was a rousing success. The Mets’ 2005 first-round pick didn’t sign until January but looked sharp in throwing six scoreless innings for high Class A St. Lucie on Opening Day. The Mets beat Vero Beach 1-0, though Pelfrey didn’t get a decision. He struck out six and gave up just two hits, needing 68 pitches. Pelfrey told TCPalm.com that his curveball wasn’t as good as he would have liked, but St. Lucie manager Gary Carter was more than pleased with his outing. "He loves to pitch in, and you could tell the Dodgers hitters weren't able to swing," Carter said. "I want to be able to call a Pelfrey into my office four to five starts from now to say, 'Hey, you're going to the big leagues.' That's what it's all about." I guess that would make him the first Met to jump from A to the Majors without at least a brief stop (Dwight Gooden, Timo Perez) in between.

I think Timo started in A ball because noone in the organization had any idea who he was or what his level of play was. I remember feeling that "hey, cool ! a Japanese-schooled carib. player !!" and I thought he would be fundamentally sound in all areas ofplay Shenanigans !!! That non-hustling, showboating, non-towel-wearing, pompous, non-achieving sumbitch !! Timo Perez, indeed. :)

Pelfrey already in Double-A, Soler Next? From BA: The clock is ticking on Alay Soler in the Florida State League. The Cuban defector was dynamite yet again last night in high Class A St. Lucie's 1-0 win against Brevard County, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out seven in seven brilliant innings. The 26-year-old righthander improved to 2-0, 0.64 with 32 strikeouts, eight walks and a .128 opponents' batting average in 28 innings this year. His command has been impeccable since he walked six batters in 10 innings over his first two starts of the season. Because of his age and background, Soler doesn't figure to be long for the FSL. The Mets signed him to a three-year, $2.8 million contract in September 2004, and he pitched at the Mets' Dominican complex in 2005. A star on the Cuban national team that won the 2002 World University Games, Soler seems to have the makeup to handle the pressure of New York, and his stuff (91-94 mph fastball and low-80s slider with exceptional depth) could put him on the fast track to pitch in the majors later this summer.

It will be great if Pelfrey and Soler can be ready for the big leagues this summer. I have a feeling we'll be needing them.
