WHEN: Wednesday 26 April 1235 PST

WHERE: AT&T Park (for the record, I've seen the Giants play home games in four "different" parks now--Candlestick, PacBell, SBC, and now this-)

Note to Mets fans: you can forget about SHEA getting any sort of play in new stadium-- there was a cry to commemorate Croix-de-Candlestick in the new SF ballfield a few years back, but guess what-- not even a Garilc Fry stand carries that name, as EVERYTHING has a corporate sponsor)

WHO: The Doc Tees-- me, wife and two daughters (5 yrs and 9 mos.)

I watched Jeff Wilpon on SNY the other night saying that Bill Shea will be honoured at the new stadium, in what way is not yet known, but a concourse or something like will be named after him...

EDIT - enjoy the game with your family DocTee.

I'll believe it when I see it-- here's hoping he's true to his word, since Shea was--and is--deserving of appreciation and recognition.

I think there should be a fan movement to call it "Shea Stadium" no matter what its official name is.

Just like "Avenue of the Americas" never managed to stick; it continued to be called Sixth Avenue. Let's all refer to Citibank Park as Shea Stadium.

Bret Sabermetric

It's Preparation-H Stadium, damn it.

Candlestick was named after Candlestick Point where the park was built. Wouldn't make sense in the Giants new stadium to name anything Candlestick.

Of course they're still calling it 'Madison Square Garden' about 5 buildings after it was actually located at Madison Square.

I was going to start a new thread until I found this buried on page five.

I'm making my first two trips to Shea this week.
Thursday, May 4 vs. the Pirates, my daughter and I take advantage of her free "Mets Fan Club for Kids" tickets. On Friday, I'm seeing the Braves with a few buddies.

Hopefully double good times.

I've been considering taking the trip to Queens with my son for that game, but with Zambrano scheduled to start, against the Braves no less, I'm having serious doubts about whether it'll be worth the effort. I can set my sights on Sunday instead, but the thought of John Maine doesn't exactly fill me with anticipation either.

Did they implement some new policy last year where the ushers aren't allowed to accept bribes to give you better seats?

I've been doing that for twenty years with no problem, then last year I got the "I could lose my job" bullshit for the first time at Shea. The first time it happened I figured it was just that particular usher being a weenie, but then it happened at two other games too.

So going to the game on Saturday, have a random question.

Since the Sunday game is at night, would there be a problem with leaving my car in the lot (or under the overpass) till the next afternoon if I wanted to go out in the city? Do they tow?

I don't think they'll let you leave it in the lot. Under the overpass might not get you towed but I wouldn't recommend it.

What I would recommend would be parking your car in the city on Saturday morning. Depends on the area, of course, but there are plenty of safe places to leave a car overnight on the street. A little persistence pays off (plus, a Saturday morning is a good time to be looking). Read the signs carefully, but there isn't a whole lot of street cleaning going on, so you should be fine in most areas.

Park it there, take the subway to the game.

I never saw that 1970 Dodger yearbook cover before.

Interesting the way each team is represented. Except for the Dodgers and Mets, only the Reds are shown as a baseball player. Now I finally know what an "Expo" looks like. The strangest thing is that instead of showing the Giants as the guy from "Jack and the Beanstalk" they chose the guy from the vegetable commercials. Weird.

I'll be making my 2006 pilgrimage to Shea this Saturday for the night game against the Orioles. It will be my first interleague game that I'll attend since October 25, 1986. (For some reason that game sticks in my mind.)

Hopefully Pedro will be pitching. If not, I don't know who it'll be. Pelfrey, perhaps?

Edgy DC
Jun 13 2006 11:04 AM

That yearbook cover rocks. Now we know the hardest National League teams to literally visualize --- an Expo, a Met, a Red, and a Phillie.

If I was on the editorial team, I'd suggest that the Phillies be represented by a mare, the Reds be represented by a beret-wearing red star-brandishing communist, the Mets be represented by an urbane swell, and the Expos by an exhibitionist.

For modern-day National League additions, I guess a Marlin is easy enough, and a Brewer can be rendered with a little imagination, but what do you do for the Rockies. I'm thinking either some sort of golem-like man-mountain or maybe a knockoff of The Thing.

Or maybe a punch-drunk boxer.

Edgy DC

I guess a literal Dodger can be represented by morally tortured young American male heading to Canada.

Even in its badness, it's good. Look at all the stuff that wouldn't fly today. All the human characters are white plus the "Brave" has a big honkin' hook nose.

And I imagine Seneca Foods would slap a cease-and-decist order on them for trademark infringement over that Giant in about seven seconds.

Will be attending tomorrow's game with my father, our first trip together to Shea since 1983 (as a rambunctious 16-year-old, I could no longer take his "root for the other team to get under my skin" routine, and vowed never to go back).
Well, we're going back. But I won't let the fact that he'll surely have a little wager on the Reds ruin my day.

Gwreck
Jun 21 2006 06:42 PM

I know what you mean, Hahn. My father loved to rip on the Mets, especially during the lean years. He used to offer to buy me beers for the game if the player of my choice could "get the ball out of the infield" during any plate appearance. Of course, this didn't always work out so well for me.

He's a Tigers fan, and it was pretty bad after the sweep in '97. I had the upper hand after the '04 sweep -- we went to the game when Piazza was honored and Cameron hit the walk-off HR into the bleachers -- but he's now taken to reminding me (daily) how many games the Tigers are ahead of the Mets in the standings.

We still manage to get to Shea about once a year though. I think I might have to take him to the House of Evil though, to see the Tigers when they come to town in August...

September 16 and 17 in Pittsburgh. I know, they'll have clinched by then but I've wanted to see PNC for a while now and the timing worked out well.

Couple thoughts:

1. Wow, tickets are easy to obtain. Even for sold-out games, like the Saturday one (it's Jack Wilson bobblehead night).

2. The Pirates, like the Mets, have a "ticket exchange" where season ticket holders can sell their extras online through the Pirates website.

Here's the good part: PA law restricts selling them for above face. You pay the Pirates surcharge, but it's not too bad (a % of the ticket price). Enter seats approx. 8 rows behind the Mets dugout.

3. You can get Outback Steakhouse to take to your seat -- and they sell Primanti Bros. sandwiches in the stadium. That alone might be worth the trip.

Row O is the second to last row.

The Mets designate rows N, O and P of the Mezzanine as the "Back Rows - Partially Obstructed" seating.

Personally, I think adding Rows L and M to that category might be warranted.

indeed it is the first of many 29th birthdays. i'll put off turning 30 as long as my boyish good looks allow me!

and i'm near tears here that nobody noticed. actually i'm not. i'd be surprised, and a little scared, if y'all had found it out somehow without me having ever, to my knowledge, told ya.

and i've gotta admit. i'm a little worried about hte whole game 5 thing. i don't have the greatest track record in terms of mets wins while at attendance, as yesterday proved.

Game 5 will be Monday, October 9, in the evening (a 7:00 or 8:00 start).

I also got tickets today...although I too suspect the game won't be necessary.

Edit: Happy Birthday!

As a note to all, the fandini is a bit too narrow to wear as a skirt. Maybe a small child could pull it off. I could probably use it as a leg warmer.

Could you maybe wear it under your kilt? Like a half slip?

Just curious -- are there any other season/plan account holders here -- or other persons holding tickets to the postseason?

When I woke up this morning, this e-mail was waiting for me:

]Dear Loser:

Thank you for participating in the random online drawing for the opportunity to purchase tickets for potential 2006 Mets postseason games scheduled to be played at Shea Stadium.

While your entry was not selected to purchase tickets for potential National League Championship Series (NLCS) games, you do remain registered for random drawings for opportunities to purchase tickets for potential 2006 World Series games scheduled to be played at Shea -- should the Mets participate -- and for any additional NLCS drawings.

Thank you again for your participation.

I got that same email, Yance. But I also got it for the NLDS and then got selected in a later round.

That's okay. I probably wouldn't have bought the tickets anyway. The way the schedule is, it looks like every potential postseason game at Shea will be played during the week. I'd be more likely to make the trip for a weekend game.

If the Mets end up playing the Phillies in the NLCS I might consider trying to get some tickets for a game in Philadelphia. Although I don't love the idea of rooting for the Mets in a playoff game in hostile territory.

My dad & I had the Saturday season ticket plan, and have 2 tickets to the following: Game 1 of the NLDS, Games 1 & 7 of the NLCS & Game 4 of the WS.

The seats are better than expected--Section 17 in the Mezzanine Reserved.

I'm totally excited, but I'd been hoping to pick up an extra ticket so that my long-suffering girlfriend could go as well.

We have the Tues/Fri plan and the Sunday plan and were very happy with what we got as well. We got Mezz 14 / Upper Box 788 for the playoffs.

Tue/Fri plans got DS Game 2, LCS Games 2 and 6, WS Game 3.
Sunday plans got the same games. We made some trades for DS 1 and LCS 1, although trading World Series tickes could be tougher.

I have to ask, is she suffering because she's a Mets fan or because she's your girlfriend?

Yancy, you just asked the question I'm sure many of us thought of asking... but didn't.

LOL!

Hah! Both, really. She started off as kind of a baseball widow, then gradually became a Mets fan over the years. By necessity, most likely, but she's a natural. She watches games on TV even when I'm not around, keeps score for me when I'm off getting beer, and shakes her head sadly when she sees babies with Yankee gear on.

She's totally earned a couple tickets to the post-season!

Wow.

Now that's good.

My g.f. has gradually become much more involved in the fan thing over the past 1.5 years -- from basically no interest to being responsible for us having the ticket plan (I wasn't going to get it, she just put the $ down and told me later) to going to road games in Pittsburgh --.but keeping score for you...wow. I can't get her to listen to me when I try to explain what it is that I'm doing making all those little markings during the game

I know, right! And jesus, but I forgot the best part. For my 30th birthday this year, she took me on an East Coast ballpark road trip. We kicked it off with a bunch of friends at Coney, then went to Boston, Baltimore & Phillie and ended up at Shea.

It was awesome. She actually asked me to show her how to score games in Baltimore. If we hadn't already gotten engaged, I'd have asked her to marry me right then and there!

The part I'm most jealous of is that you're only 30!

...says the man who was old enough to have seen the '86 series, in person.

(Those younger often have much to be jealous of too).

Got NLDS Game 5 (Game 3 at Shea) tickets. Not bad...middle of section 8 in the upper deck. I almost kind of hope it doesn't go to game 5, but it would be great to be at a deciding game like that.

I got my NLCS rejection letter today.

Very cool. I should start dropping hits to my g.f. now.

I don't know who around here is big on the blog-reading, but she's the writer of the two of us and decided (what timing!) that this was the season to document in blog form: http://www.metsgrrl.com
